I read about this film a few months ago in one of the online papers. The Beeb had a segment on the end of WWI in their History podcast and one of the speakers mentioned Peter Jackson's film that is being so well received by viewers and critics. Well, hopefully us folks here in the states will see the film soon

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired global distribution rights to They Shall Not Grow Old, the Peter Jackson-directed World War I documentary that premiered October 16 at the London Film Festival to rave reviews. The deal was made after the film was screened for Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich; New Line president/Chief Content Officer Carolyn Blackwood; Global Marketing Chief Blair Rich; domestic distribution president Jeff Goldstein; and Tom Molter, president of international theatrical distribution.

I most certainly do plan on seeing this. I'll probably have to go to the movie theater alone though since I already know my wife will pass on it. smile

Have you seen any additional info other info on U.S. release dates? I did a quick search for dates but came up empty. I did see it is playing in IMAX in some countries so maybe here too?

I have not seen any yet but my educated guess would be that the film will have a limited release on IMAX in the US. I'll keep an eye out for any updates.

Finally watched it today. My mum recorded it for me because I refuse to fund the BBC and therefore won't buy a TV licence.

It was very good if a little graphic in places. It was quite shameful how the troops were treated when they got back to Blighty.

I'm not overly familiar with how the US troops were treated, but the film intimated that the British troops were largely shunned by the public on their return. They were discriminated against when they applied for jobs and got little recognition for what they had suffered on the front.

At the beginning of the film one guy said he was attacked by women who shoved a white feather in his face when he told them he was only 17 and therefore too young to join up although boys as young as 15 were signing up by lying about their age and the army turned a blind eye towards it.

I really don’t understand this at all. It’s not like the UK started the war and if the public was truly weary from the war they should have focused their grievances against the politicians, not the soldiers.

The men came back to the promise of a "Land Fit for Heroes" which didn't materialise.
Many of them were unable to settle after what they had endured and seen. Many of them originally enlisted to escape poverty or a humdrum existence with little prospects. Many of the injured, mentally traumatised and particularly the limbless were deemed unfit to return to their previous employment and were summarily dismissed. (This was my father's situation in the next war."Due to loss of limb, you will be unable to carry out the duties expected of you" stated the dismissal letter).
Many jobs were lost to women while the men were in the Forces, who worked for less. Though most of the women (like a great aunt of mine) were expected to leave their lucrative duration employment and give up their independence and return to home-life or the few career paths open to them, despite the advancement to them in many ways and the right to vote for certain classes.

As to Panzer's comment above, people were just tired of war and it's sacrifices and privations wanted nothing to do with it. According to my Grandmother, the loss of two brothers 'missing, presumed killed' was just accepted and the family carried on with their lives hardly discussing their loss at all.
Many were mystified and couldn't cope with the personality change in their menfolk, a syndrome we now recognise as PTSD. And of course they were faced with the Influenza pandemic too, which claimed more victims than the conflict did.
All seeds of revolution, which didn't occur in Britain, unlike France, Germany and Russia.

And then 21 years later having to face belligerence again from the same nation. A prophecy of General Foch's,, which led to his dismissal which came to unfortunate fruition.

A - Which one?

Q - Um the one thats in color and has the soldiers talking in it. I hear it is suposed to be the best quality documentary.

Mmm... it's in color and there are soldiers talking in it.... what could it be... LOL

Amazingly someone figured out that he was actually asking about "They Shall Not Grow Old".

New WB trailer released yesterday. They Shall Not Grow Old – New Trailer – In Theaters December 17 & 27 Only. I hope this is U.S. release dates since it is a WB-branded trailer?

edit....yup! movie is showing only 1 day in Chicago on Dec 17 as a 3D film (not too thrilled with having to see it in 3D based on other experiences)

I'm probably older than most who post here and when I was a kid almost every male you encountered was a veteran of either WW1 or WW2. I don't remember any bad treatment towards these men by the public. How could there be when there wasn't a family without its dead or maimed? Veterans were honoured and in fact on November 11 at 11'oclock the whole country stopped for the two minute silence, the factory sirens all whistled and the air raid sirens sounded the all clear. I remember it clear as day.

Jeez we as kids played with dummy hand grenades and steel helmets, gas masks, you name it. Every house had its shelter out the back, usually with the toilet in it. The German wars were a big part of anyone's life growing up in England in the fifties and veterans were our heroes.

My mother's Anderson was used as a coal and wood store, but her mother never bothered to use it because it was damp. she wouldn't go to the public shelter either, 'too smelly' and there was always someone there that she had had a bit of 'argy-bargy' with' A great one for feuds my Nanna.
Meanwhile my mother was spending her nights fire=watching on a building near Liverpool Street, facing the might of the Luftwaffe with a bucket and stirrup pump.

As to veterans, in my experience they were oft treated with indifference here when I lived in London. As you say, most served so it was the norm perhaps. And us English don't like to 'blow our own trumpets!'
It only came to light when I started writing and researching for the House Magazine in the Department Store on interviewing some of the employees I discovered many tales of sacrifice dedication and even heroism, often prompted by that person's colleagues giving me the information about that individual's achievements in conflict. MMs DSO/DFCs abounded, and even a Croix de Guerre awarded to a very reticent lady who had been with the S.O.E.

My father, never one to 'wave his wooden leg' was feted to the point of embarrassment (and inebriation cheers ) in France and particularly the USSR when it was perceived he was an injured veteran when my parents travelled extensively in the 1970s
