L'Etoile du Nord
.

Greetings All,

In a thread last week Nowi asked about a single source work that covered the French side of aviation in WWI and I recommended he try "French Aviation During the First World War" by Vital Ferry. I breezed through a copy of it a few years back when it first came out and found it quite informative, very concise, and packed with a lot of old photos. I did not purchase a copy then, likely because money was a bit short, but I'm fairly flush now so I went ahead and bought it last week from an online seller. It just arrived in the morning mail and the book is every bit as concise and chock-full of photos as I remember. Well worth the money if you are wanting a brief overview of French military aviation on the Western Front in WWI. With this latest addition my personal WWI library now contains the following works.

Lou, I know I've said this many times already, but I'll say it again - you truly have a fantastic library.

Thanks to modern technology, some of those books can now be read online for free. But it's not the same as owning an actual book.

Thanks Hasse! And I agree, I have many e-books in my library as well, but there is just something very special about reading an actual old book. You get a connection that isn't there with the electronic versions.

Also reading a paper book is easier on the eyes, or at least that's the case for my old pair of eyeballs.

one of my long-standing favorite reference books was...

"Early Aircraft Armament: The Aeroplane and the Gun Up to 1918" by Harry Woodman. (254 pages)
ISBN-10: 0853689903
ISBN-13: 978-0853689904

the best single volume on WWI aircraft weapons I've ever read. if it was a weapon mounted on an aircraft, even once, it's in the book. he even covers the different types of deflector plates, interrupter gears, and the different types of mountings used. often with reproductions of historical schematics. (would not be surprised if the WOFF development team used it as a reference)

the aggravating thing is that it was out of print and very expensive when I looked for it. it took me several years to find a good affordable copy. I looked at sellers in Australia, England, Canada, and the United States. just about everybody at the time was selling it for $150-$300! just couldn't afford that! eventually, after searching AbeBooks, Amazon, and ebay for a couple of years I finally found a cheap good copy in South Africa.... for $80.

but, for the longest time, I couldn't afford it. so while I was waiting I bought...

"Flying Guns of World War I by Anthony G. Williams"(192 pages)
ISBN-10: 1840373962
ISBN-13: 978-1840373967

ironically, THAT book is now expensive just like the Woodman book used to be. so I can't honestly recommend it as an alternative now. they're both good books... but if you can get the Woodman for less money I encourage you to do so.

Waldemar, thanks for the info on the Woodman book, I've a memory of seeing it years ago but I had totally forgotten about it until your mention of it here. I went online and found a copy of it on eBay for $28.00 with free shipping, so I went ahead and grabbed it. The description says it's in very good condition and in original dust jacket - we shall see. Seems like a bargain regardless.

congrats Louvert! the Woodman book should be a great addition. I first found that book in a public library - they kept it in a special locked room and you had to hand over your library card just to even hold it in your hands! given how much info was in there - and how hard it would have been to replace - that was a wise decision.

Remarkable library Lou!!!

Can one obtain a library card for your library!...lol
I see many a good read in there. I will use the library as a bench mark to start augmenting my small collection of WW 1 books!

Cheers!

Deejan, yes, library cards are available. biggrin

Waldemar, the Woodman book arrived today and not only is it in perfect condition and in its original unclipped dust jacket, but more importantly it is an outstanding reference source on the subject. Thanks again for the heads-up.
