More French aviators died in action in 1918, than in 1914, 1915, 1916, and 1917 combined!

.

On 7 August 1914, French pilot Corporel Joseph "Sadi" Lecointe of Esc. BL10 took off from Belfort aerodrome with his observer Capitaine Langlois to do a reconnaissance of areas to the northeast. They came under fire from ground units and upon returning to camp discovered that the Capitaine had been wounded in the thigh, thus making him the first casualty of the war in the air.

Paul Tarascon, who flew the “Zigomar” Nieuports that I fly, and which pop up as a WOFF screen, had a wooden foot. He also trained Charles Nungesser.
