Does anyone see the big irony here with the first list? The fact that those are all “Bible Belt” States?

The obesity list doesn't surprise me at all. We all know that Southern and Cajun food tastes great but it's also often a heart attack on a plate!

Biscuits and gravy FTW!

On the other, well, socio-economic status factors huge in STD transmission.

Use of birth control is a sin in some religions.

How does strictly birth control protect against STD’s?

Edit: and yes, Mark got my poInt. smile

A high STD rate implies that lots of people are sleeping around with multiple partners.

Yeah, but aren't most STDs spread through casual sex? Wouldn't that also be considered a sin in these same religions?

I would think that using a condom would be the lesser of two evils (BC vs. unmarried sex) and they do prevent STDs, correct?

I admit that I'm not street smart whatsoever with this kinda stuff (nor religious).

++++++++++

PM, Southern cuisine (usually comfort food) isn't always the healthiest, but I think ginormous portion sizes and always taking the path of least resistance (seeking the closest parking spot, taking escalators/elevators instead of ramps/stairs/steps) are equally to blame.

Also the fact that we're used to it now. Today's 'skinny' was yesterday's normal/average (remember that YT video you posted of a crowded London in the 60's or 70's?). I've also noticed that diabetes is almost becoming normalized now, considered just a symptom of aging.

I am not sure about socio-economic status being a big factor in this country. The clinics on most university campus's see a pretty brisk business.

This poll is nonsense.

Not that I would know, but lived in Columbus, OH for three years, and the Buckeye's should at least be in the Top 5.

The problem with blanket statistics like this is they are meaningless, just as crime statistics for a state is.

Is this largely within urban areas? Which ones? Is there a casual relationship to STD's and race? Is this in poorer areas, or more wealthy ones?

For example, Alabama's "gun violence" statistics can be found almost entirely within ten square miles of three cities (Birmingham, Montgomery, and Mobile). Over all, the state is a pretty damned safe place to live, if one avoids living in a small collection of neighborhoods in the three largest cities.
