No, not really if you don´t want to, same goes for map. You can have small skirmish if you like. Has a very flexible battle generator, so you have alot of options to tailor your battles. Orders are given to Company, Platoon or Squad level, so it´s up to you how much micro you want to do, and how much units (purchase points) you want to spend.
