Is it me or the fences are very hard object in the game and are also everywhere. I'd say nine out of the 10 times i tried to land in a field i seem to do "ok" until i hit the fence. I assume i hit them probably too fast but still... Everytime, i die. They also seems to be quite a lot of them.

Fences, Trees, Water , and the ground are all enemies of the Flyer.

A Hurricane with a heavy Merlin engine up front hitting a wire or wooden fence at 60 to 70 mph would just plough straight through it... I guess it's something that the dev's can't address otherwise they would have changed it.
Still, picking a road to land on seems to be the only way around it as Pol suggests.

Let's move beyond speculation: Pol, is this the case? Or does OBD consider this a feature and its presence is the result of decision to implement it?

Personally, and respectfully, I think it's ahistoric. I can't find one case of a pilot dying because his plane taxiied or rolled into a fence. Even in WW1. Even if there are one or two cases--there seem to be exceptions to everything--only one or two cases highlights the rarity of the event. It really is frustrating to have a great mission, nurse a damaged plane back across the lines, have to land off-field--all great fun--and then roll into a fence at 5 or 10 mph, and die in a plane that shows no further damage from hitting the fence. We're not talking about the Berlin Wall, either. Rather, some flimsy, old-ass-wood-looking fences. Meanwhile, I have scores of photos of WW1 planes smashed up and pranged with their pilots posing next to them, with minor injuries at worst. Meanwhile, my pilot is dead in a plane that is undamaged from the fence collision, standing upright next to a FOAWL fence that is unbroken.

We consider it to be set correctly how it is. Any further change and it would be totally no damage whatsoever which is not correct either. People would also be saying hey I hit a fence and nothing happened.

They are set to softer than other items - i.e. they damage you but don't necessarily kill you - unless your are already partly damaged which is likely crashing along the ground at 75MPH.

Even trying to test this (yet again) I landed 6 times and missed the fence - stopped short, blew up before anyway etc.

I am sure it was very frustrating to belly land in real life, as usually in a hurricane you'd be dead.

Those flimsy fences are representations, we do not have dozens of wall or fence types. As I said before actually it would be much hairier landing as you'd have ditches, holes, stone walls etc.

You can also try to bring the tail round in a belly landing to stop sooner, very useful in the 109. Or as I said before land nearer a road, along side it. There's plenty of them.

No real comment other than to say that that is a great answer Pol that explains your position, lets us know that you understand what we are questioning and says why you think it would be worse to change it. I don't want to tell you how to do things and I know you guys are busy, but I think some of the problems on the announcement thread could have been cleared up with responses like this. Anyway, I appreciated it! salute

Good explanation.

Changing the visual model of fences to look like a stone wall would make them easier to see, also people would expect to get hurt hitting them. Maybe a modder could tackle this?

I suspect this can be done as long as you are willing to pay the FPS price, since the wall will have more vertices than the fence and thus tax the CPU & GPU more.

CPU = i9 11900K
GPU = RTX 3080 Ti
Monitor = ASUS ROG Swift PG32UQX 2160p G-sync

OK guys WM had a deeper look into code, and has worked some fence and object magic for the next patch (if testing goes OK). A better solution.

For example hit the top of a tree and you will receive small amount of damage, hit another tree top and you will likely be going down. Hit the lower part of the tree (trunk) and expect the aircraft to be badly damaged immediately (or worse).

He has managed to add extra features to handle the object collision in a more varied way.

Fences will damage you / your craft but at a now reduced rate, so go through one you will be fine go through 2 or 3 or perhaps more and you will likely be a crater.
Fly into one at speed with wheels down and they will likely collapse or be too damaged but you will survive the first hit likely.

Hit something solid at speed like a building an expect to die.

Hurricanes although designed for war are still aircraft and are still made of light materials in many places so don't expect to fly through a building or solid object, and other objects will still damage you.

Slow hits will just likely stop you with a small amount of damage.

(a usual proviso.. all of this is subject to change or may not get released of course if we find other problems but for now looking good).

Great news Pol and many thanks to WM. Early I know but could some of the fence solutions be possibly used in WOFF in the future also?
Many thanks
