Hi Chaps,

Hope you are all doing well and thank you in advance for keeping EAW running. I'm finally getting a bit of a breather in RL and my flight sim hobby is calling to me. I'm working on getting some older titles to work again and I've seen that you have all been busy as always creating new versions of EAW.

I'm interested in getting the sim working as close to its original form as I can. I usually played the stock three campaigns offline in EAW and I wanted to see if one of the versions, perhaps the 160 Foundations version might be the way to go to get the sim running close to stock on a Windows 10 rig. Many thanks as always for your help.

Cheers!

Capt
Both of the current versions are good in their own right and each is different from my end .. EAWPRO feels and looks more like the original to me..This is a link to MarkEAW's site for it and he explains it very well
https://eaw.neocities.org/index.html and Jelly had links to his work in all his posts if nothing else give both a test drive and choose I don't know how they work in Win 10 I'm using Win 7 but I know Jelly uses both.I don't understand all the various patches but.Mark has a lot of good information at his site and there's a section that explains the various patch levels a good read .

Hi Chaps,

I've gotten EAWPRO up and running well on my Windows 10 system. I've added the latest version of dgvoodoo for Glide and it's also working well. I only have one issue at this point, which is the effects sometimes turn negative colors. So the vapor trails from the bombers will initially begin as white smoke, but then turns an X-Ray color, where you can see the black border around the sprite. Is there a way to correct this? Thanks so much in advance.

Capt..The is another glide wrapper that a lot of folks use instead of dgvoodooo http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide Also try D3D and see if it's the same If you could post a screen shot folks that know a heck of a lot more than me could help you

Will do. I tried D3D and the issue isn't there, but the frame rate is in the single digits. Will take a look and post back when I get a chance.

Hi Chaps!

Just quickly loaded up EAW and grabbed this screenshot. Seems to happen with the vapor trail effects regardless of whether I'm using dgVoodoo or nGlide. Otherwise the game looks great!

System specs:

Windows 10 64bit
i7 4790 @ 3.60ghz
nVidia GeForce 745 GTX (Dell OEM)
16GB RAM

I wonder if there's a way to knock back the effects to the default sprites - I think these are improved vapor trails, smoke effects, gunfire, etc in EAWPro - I wonder if the original settings would play nicer with the glide wrapper?

I have an installation of 1.26E running well in Windows 10 with no sprite problems.
It is effectively EAW1.2 with a couple of fixes that we put in years ago well before we got the source code to stop things like the CD check and the operating system check and its "...will not run under NT" error.
So, it is ideal for the 1.2 career sessions, but without the "smacker" movies that will not run in Windows 10.

Watch out for some other minor bugs in the release version of EAWPro, such as the Spit IX hangar sprite, and the mirror image aircraft shadows.

[Linked Image]

For the shadows of the fuselage, wings and tail-plane to be where they are the sun would have to be directly above.
In that case the shadow of the tailfin would be mainly obscured by the shadow of the fuselage and not a mirror image of the tailfin on the runway.
The rudder section which overhangs the fuselage would be a thin line.

The default 1.2 version is much more realistic

Hi Mr. Jelly,

Great to hear from you - hope you are doing well! Where can I find the 1.26E installation? I'd be curious to give that a go as well.

Cheers!

You may need to wai a week frown
I am away in Lyon with my laptop and a slow internet connection.

I will try to do it from here, but I anticipate that the uploading time will take ages.

If I do not succeed then when I get home next week I will package it and upload it to my folder at MediaFire.

Watch this space smile

Edit:
There is a 1.26 installation there that I made some time ago. It is probably good, but I am downloading it to check.

It seems to work:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/rgve5aj11k6m42g/EAW126.exe/file

On this laptop I had t set it up with DXWnd and nGlide working together, but it flew well wink

It is a complete installation, so you will need to use your own "eaw.ini"

wink Jel

Just to chime in, EAW vanilla works fine under Win 10 when installed "manually" .

There's an instruction for it here https://eaw.neocities.org/ -> check "Install" in the "Documents" section.
You basically copy some of the files from the CD manually, making sure they aren't marked read-only after copying to your HDD/SSD. No compatibility options needed, only "run as administrator" on eaw.exe.
I recommend reading the Install section I linked in its entirety though.

With nGlide game looks and playes like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VGPfM0v3TU

All is working with the exception of the video clips.

Darn good video damson beats what's on T.V...A manual install has been the norm for awhile ..don't have win 10 but that's the way to do it in win 7 as suggested om MarkEAW's site

Hi Guys,

Hope you are all doing well this weekend. I am very happy to report that I am now running 1.26 and 1.2 stock with no issues on Windows 10. As a matter of fact, I was able to copy all of the files to a thumb drive and I now have EAW along with an old version of Red Baron 3D on a portable USB stick - a far cry from how I played the game originally. With a glide wrapper dropped in the main directory everything runs nice and smooth!

It was a wave of nostalgia to see the original main screen and hear the menu music again. Just clicking through the menus and enjoying the immersive setup to this game was fantastic. Game design today seems to ignore player immersion - there is an assumption that graphics do the immersion for you - that UI should be used but not seen. I couldn't disagree with that more. What made EAW so great were the small touches - the flag waving outside the barracks, the sound of a bunk mate coughing, the airplanes flying by and the engines running up in the hangers. All of it made you feel like you were there, back in 1943, fighting to stay alive. I've missed that terribly and while other sims have moved forward in flight modeling and graphic design, they lost that touch for the atmospheric. I hope one day it makes a come back. In the meantime, it's great to pop in my USB drive and take a classic up for a spin again. Thank you to everyone here for keeping a gem of an old flight sim going after so many years. I appreciate it more than I can tell you.

Cheers!

Outstanding Capt,,just recently had theurge to put Red Baron back in,,Got WOFF but it's OK to look at there's no soul there..When i used to run a career in RB I really took it seriously..Not a graphics mind blower but with a couple mods it's good,,EAW and RB are better than the newer stuff as I said they have soul and are immersive..

Thanks Russ. I have to admit, I spend most of my time with WOFF and now WoTR as they feel to me like they get that sense of immersion - particularly WOFF with pilot creation and the design of the interface. Hopefully WoTR can develop along a similar line. Still great to have the classics around to remind me how I got into this hobby in the first place! Cheers!

Hi Guys!

Just wanted to add to my last post. 1.26 runs perfectly! No issues with the sim or running campaign missions. I had one instance where the sim alt-tabbed out on me and crashed but it may have been Windows 10 doing something that pulled the game out. Otherwise I've had no issues.

And it's fantastic to have EAW back in near stock form! I played the daylights out of those original campaigns - I love the briefing screens, the barracks music, the sight of aircraft running their engines up in the hanger room. EAW is such an atmospheric game and it's a treat to be able to go back and revisit it. I actually can't remember the last time I had a truly functioning copy. My last go around involved using Windower apps and other tricks but most of the menus in the sim weren't functioning.

Just want to say thanks again for keeping this great sim running. Graphically it's quite dated, yes, but the atmosphere and the sheer number of aircraft you can throw into the skies makes this a sim I'm happy to return to. A fantastic game, even 19 years later (at least since I got the game!)

Cheers guys!

Just to point out some help in deciding what to use or try next read this page:
https://eaw.neocities.org/first-use.html

This page explains briefly the main builds of EAW from the stock game to source modified versions and machine manipulated versions.
All worth trying, its just a matter of which one next.

The old Campaigns from Microprose may have trouble though with non stock versions of EAW. But try single player missions quick missions to see how the game performs on your system and to witness the effects and capabilities of each.
