I am going to assume however that in the rebuild process some liberties have been taken to improve reliability / durability, using modern alloys at the very least. Paul G. Allen’s Messerschmitt Me 262 – Progress Report

I hope they improve the reliability of the engines first! When Planes of Fame rebuilt the engines for their P-59 they used modern bearings in the rebuild of the engine. I suspect they did something similar with the rebuild of the Jumo engines for the 262, especially since Steve Hinton is going to be doing the test flights. Steve Hinton is president of Planes of Fame in Chino, CA. Wheels

I believe the original engines on the 262 also had problems with metallurgy in the turbine blades. Hence the short service life.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Could be, but I suspect the turbine blades would have been checked with the latest technology if they were going to be reused. I would ask Steve but since it is one of Paul Allen's babies I am positive he wouldn't be able to tell me until ithe 262 flew and possibly not even then. Wheels

I just cannot imagine flying anything powered by a 70 year old jet engine with 70 year old turbine blades. They just HAD TO have made new ones with modern alloys. Right?

I am pretty much assuming new ones have been made, as well as an improved fuel control system that doesn’t cause compressor stalls when you add a handful of thrust.

On the Facebook page I made a comment about the Jumos reliability and they said it would be made with modern materials and metals. That tells me it is based on the plans but a replica of same.

There is one flying, you know that Its a gilder only though, no rocket propulsion. I think a Volksjager would be more scary to fly. For a plane that was meant to be flown by newbie pilots it was supposedly a real handful.

There is one flying, you know that Its a gilder only though, no rocket propulsion. Correct. No huge gonads needed if you aren't using those nasty highly corrosive rocket propellants.

For a plane that was meant to be flown by newbie pilots it was supposedly a real handful. Winkle Brown told us at a lecture that he considered the He-162 one of the nicest-flying planes he had ever tried.

Interesting article on the ME 262. Talks about quality of material affecting engine. https://www.realclearhistory.com/ar...turned__ww_ii_in_germanys_favor_367.html
