I saw earlier today that the F-18 Cruise was flying in had to abort due to a technical fault with the aircraft.

Cautiously optimistic for this one. It's still Hollyweird so there's a good chance it will blow chunks. lol

Just the other day, an F-14 spotted on the deck on the CVN-71 Theodore Roosevelt in San Diego... tomcat

Nice to see the ol' Cat back in the spotlight.

I remember this Tomcat being the subject of many Twitter rumors regarding "Top Gun: Maverick." One of the big rumors was that it was an Iranian Tomcat that would be used as the enemy jet, but they based this on the finflash. Lots of people were like, I've never seen that logo before, it must be that logo of an enemy air force.

Well, that logo happens to be the SECDEF Phoenix logo, an award for maintenance excellence:

From the SECDEF website:
Quote
The Secretary of Defense Field-level Maintenance Awards are symbolized by the legendary Phoenix, a mythological bird which lived for some five centuries, died, was consumed by flames, and then reborn from its own ashes. Periodically, so states the myth, the Phoenix would again and again be reborn. This unique ability of the legendary Phoenix to rejuvenate and renew itself characterizes the role of weapon systems and maintenance in the DOD. The winner of the Phoenix Award, recognized as the best of the best field-level maintenance units, will be selected from the six field-level award winners.

Here's a sample winner:

And another (You know of course I had to sneak this one in):

It was just interesting to see what kinds of speculation came up on social media about the oo and ah sightings of "Top Gun: Maverick" production.

Cool images. Makes me wonder what they're cooking up for the movie. Hopefully something cool and appropriate and not something goofy.

That video makes me even more curious now as to what they are doing with the story. Could they be going Iron Eagle where Maverick and Goose's son commandeer an Iranian Tomcat? Maverick in flight gear running through the snow into a forrest?! What's going on?

I'll bet that the Tomcat is just part of a flashback scene.

Active duty classified projects pilot gets asked to teach some Top Gun youths for special mission? He's wearing what I suspect is a pressure suit with low observable treatment to the fabric for some high altitude high speed trans-atmospheric thing when Ed Harris calls him in. What did Mav do with the last 30+ years after becoming an ace in a day? Used his cred to go faster, it seems, promotions be damned. I know what Cruise used his accomplished aviation experience and Hollywood clout for: to make this one as real as possible and not just shoot for three days in the aircraft.
