14 Jul 1940.

Yellow section was posted to Brighton ( a forward field to try and catch Convoy Raiders and Weather Patrol a/c over Brighton A.O.

We just got the Petrol Browsers when Section leader Colin said go with what ya got. I had 45 % P.O Rhys had 49 % ) Ops reported a Weather or Recon machine at Angels 10 over head. We Tallyhoed the e/a ( a 110 or 215 ) in a clear shy . I made a slight dive and fired , I missed 2 long bursts but noting then shot pass to come around again. However, P/O Rhys got the brute with a six o clock shot. I did see 1 parachute come out of the stricken machine.

Pilot Officer Mark Fairbanks
RAF43
Tangmere Airfield
Aug. 23, 1940

We were having tea at 11h37 when the scramble alert blared. We have 3 minuets to be airborne. B flight was airborne in less than that. A bit unexpected as it was heavy cloud and raining so we thought Jerry might give us a day off. We were vectored to Poling, where one of our radar chains sit. Breaking out of the soup at 12,000’ we climbed to 13,000’. Harris called “enemy spotted”. I followed even though I had not seen them yet. “12 o’clock low” was his next signal before he dove.

As soon as I pushed on the stick I could see them in the clouds. Harris made the first pass and dove through them. I dove on the trailing Dornier and let go 3 long long burst on the starboard engine before pulling up and raking it across the cockpit. Looking back I saw 2 chutes open from the falling machine. Rolling over I came in on another using the same tactic with the same result as the Dornier went into the clouds in a spin.

Knowing I was low on ammunition I dove out north toward the coast. The weather had become worse if I thought it was possible so descended by instruments until good old terra firma came into sight at 2000’. Getting my bearings I headed back to Tangmere. With 4 confirmed victories already this would make me an ace! I hummed along in my Hurricane right proud of myself. Coming out of the soup a few miles from Tangmere I scanned the skies around me and saw nothing. Throttle back a bit, circle the field once, landing gear down, lower flaps, looking forward to finishing that tea.
Tracers flash by my canopy! I break easy right slamming the throttle forward, raising gear and flaps at the same time. The Hurricane wallowed a bit but kept air between me and the earth. Looking around I saw the 109 streaking for home after missing a sitting duck!

I landed in a cold sweat. Only 5 of B flight made it back ok. Two had been hit and were seen to have bailed out. They were picked up and returned that afternoon though Harris was wounded. He was able two confirm my 2 claims.

I am now an Ace! More important, still alive

Yellow section left Brighton and did a Standing Patrol over Southampton then back to Tangmere. Popped over to 43 Sqn dispersal for a visit with P/O Fairbanks. ( Hes one of the MFair Fairbanks ) The Operation people said he was up on a Flap, I did notice that their Sqn had their own car ( with a full tank of fuel ) and some Horses out in the pasture pass the Hangers. It has been a hectic two weeks since I arrived at the Swn. I've flown three missions: the first was a quiet patrol over pur convoys, the second involved a crash on takeoff that put me in the hospital for 13 days and then at 1130 this morning, after returning from hospital, we had a Yellow Flight Scramble to intercept a Sqn of bombers over the channel.

Leader spotted 6 JU 88s making a pass at our shipping. We kept out heads on a seivel for the escorts, but seeing none, we dove in for a turkey shoot. Geoffrey (Yellow Flight Leader) got 2, my wingman Luke Corwin and I shared one and I added another myself. It was exhilarating, but I did feel my stomach turn a bit when I did not see any chutes from my kill.

If things keep on like this, Jerry doesnt stand a chance.

Sector ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha
11 Group July 1940, Somewhere East of Hawkinge.

I was taking a Hurri up for testing (QMB). The briefing led me to expect 2 x Bf-109's about 2 miles fro my position. My shock was palpable when I discovered said Hostile AIrcraft to be at a mere 400 yds from me approaching head on. Fortunately, between some choice remarks of a blashphemous nature and some button pinching, I managed to crank my Hurri around in a right hander that cut inside their angle and denied them a chance to perforate me before I'd begun the fight in earnest. Hauling her around after them I was surprised to find nothing but large patches of empty blue sky where I expected to find Messerschmitt. For some reason one of them seemed to have no interest in me and left me for his wingman. We fenced about the sky for a bit, he came at me from various angles and I hauled my kite inside his angle, denying him the shot and letting him have a squirt from my .303 paint strippers as he whizzed by. Little puffs of aluminium and paint indicated that I was finding my mark and after a few rounds like this he decided that sightseeing over England wasn't really his thing and he lit out back to France.

So I found myself alone and made a steep descent towards Hawkinge, keeping a weather eye out for any further Teutonic interference. Hawkinge appeared ahead and, after restarting my engine because I'd overcooled it (or let it idle too low, not sure), I entered the pattern. For some reason my flaps refused to extend, fortunately my undercarriage was more cooperative and I landed long on the field, sliding to a screeching, sideways halt mere yards from the perimeter fence. I dare say a tyre rolled off the rim as taxiing was no longer possible. With great alarum an odd juxtaposition of vehicles came clamouring up to my Hurri, from them stepping men weilding an unusual array of axes, hoses and stretchers. I slid back the hood, lit up a cigarette and politely informed them that their services would not be required.

Let's pretend I got the BWOC badge to embed here.

Nice reports DC and Ace!

Pilot Officer Mark Fairbanks,
August 24, 1940

One coastal patrol today. A and B flights. Heavy cloud cover. Saw a few 110's but they high tailed it back over the Channel.

[Linked Image]

August 26,
Back up again with A and B flights. At 13,000' near Ford airfield we ran smack into a gaggle of 110's! I pulled up and rolled over behind one chasing a member of "A" flight. He pulled up and I hit him square with a long burst. The 110 nosed over and I observed 2 chutes exit the doomed machine

[Linked Image]

I started circling with radio chatter buzzing in my ears. I could not see anyone around and then noticed flak low near Ford airfield. I nosed down in a screaming dive and saw another 110 at low altitude heading home. I came in behind him and gave him two long bursts. Pieces flew off the 110 as I pulled up over him in a steep climb. I spotted him to the west climbing and gave chase. Before I could get back on him two chutes appeared and the 110 rolled over and went down.

Not seeing any other activity I heard Harris say he was headed home so I did the same. Everyone came in safe. Winfrey and Ross both claimed one and I put my claim in for two. It has been a good day.

Aug 24, 1940.

Morning:

Sqn scramble test. The Station Commander said we were taking too long. We need to get it down to 2 mins.

Afternoon got a belly full of English Channel. Yellow section had the duty to see if any more Jerries showed up by a Convoy. Spotted 1 e/a and as we went into line astern for the attack, my motor sputtered and died. As I lost height, I did 3 restarts, but no luck. With a dead battery and starting to drop like a rock, I corkscrewed down finding Fishing boats. Canopy back and locked, Chute straps tight, seat belts off I flipped over and fell out. I lost my flight boots when the shock of the chute opened. and landed 100 yards from a small boat.

II Section Scramble re in force Escort over Convoy Agent. Once airborne Top Hat directed us to South East of Thorny Island with Bandits 18 +, Angels 20, Buster. The flight of 6 Hurricanes were chomping at the bit. as we neared the flight leader spotted a lone Bomber and said line astern attack. I was #2 and saw the 1lt, Nail the e/a. two chutes came out. Then someone yelled Yellow Nosed Bandits coming down Break and we all broke. I saw a passing 109 ( 1 of many ) and shot at it no hits ( a lot behind it according to the tracers ) Then he dove away. I was alone , couldnt fine anyone , and shook up so called it a day. The Sqn lost 2 a/c. claims 3 e/a ? I only saw the Bomber.

Carrick, nice shots of the Hurricane spilling its spent brass! Good one. If I may, while “chomping “ at the bit is commonly used the correct term is “champing” at the bit. Tally Ho and all that.

Went out for an intercept over the channel and ran into a flight of He - 111. Our flight leader dove away to attack some planes below us unseen by me, but I pressed on for the bombers, who were now beating a retreat away from us south east-ward. I closed on the first and despite taking some hits, was able to bring him down with some shots on his right engine. I then switched to his wingman but started taking some fire, some of which seemed to be coming from behind me. I broke off and repositioned, sending him down with chutes popping out. Pleased with my luck, I bugged out back for base only to find that my gear wasn't working. I tried to lower it manually, but only one wheel would lock down. (Maybe I was doing it wrong, I admit I wasn't paying close attention that day in flight school.) Not trusting my ability to land on one wheel, I took her up and bailed out on the coast. Shaken-but-not-stirred up, I waited to be picked up and went back to base to submit my claims. Here's the gun camera footage:

In the mess that evening , we were treated to the Section leaders Gun Camera film. Since the Sqn Commander and both flight leaders are the only ones with gun cameras, It was a short affair.

Thanks Rick. I’m a little slow since retiring. I was thinking “who the heck is Florence?” Yep, we are clear but Hurricane season does not end until October so wait and watch. Prayers for the folks in her path. Katrina is still fresh on my mind.

[Linked Image]

Scramble before breakfast. We were off to our Hurricanes and in the air in a little over 2 minuets headed to the south of London.

[Linked Image]

Approaching the patrol area Harris called out that the enemy was spotted. I followed him in a curving dive and soon spotted the flight of enemy bombers. We dove in behind the 5 Heinkel's and I could only get off 2 bursts before pulling up. As I leveled out and looked about to make another pass I was gobsmacked to see a 110 off my wing!

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

I pulled up and rolled over beind the 110 and with a few long bursts had it smoking before it turned over and went down.

[Linked Image]

I found myself alone with Harris coming over the radio saying he was headed home. I did the same. Approaching our base at 4000' I ran smack into 4 110's. They must have been heading home because only one made a half hearted attempt at combat and since I was low on ammo I bid him good by.

Everyone returned safe and we had claimed seven enemy aircraft total. We had no more than sat down for tea when the siren blared again. Off to the east of London on another scramble. We arrived over the patrol area and had beat the enemy there so we were waiting for them. JU88's.
Harris and I both made a pass at the flight. I scored multiple hits on one as I pulled up. I heard the ping of hits as I rolled over for another pass. Coming in again the 88 caught on fire and went down.

[Linked Image]

Leveling off my engine sputtered and then died. In all the excitement I did not realize my fuel tank was hit. Lucky for me a field was below and after cranking down the landing gear manually I made a decent dead stick landing.

MFair: No problem U'all. My family is in VA and North Carolina (Extended ) There are times on the phone where the accent is so thick that I have to stop and think. So far everyone is fine. Lots of service outage and Landscape damage, but insurance should cover it. Knock on Wood.

Mr. Rawlings: I must be doing something wrong. I am Retired, but only have been able to play 6 or 7 times.

Posted back to 145th. Nice to be back, but they stuck me with an a/c from Repair that came from 303 Sqn. Oh well, Flew Convoy Patrol. Section leader yelled Stuka's low and right. Everyone help yourself. Down the six of us went, my a/c speed went pass 300 MPH. I fire 2 bursts Hits ? then I shot pass. Pulling hard back on the stick , I barely missed the water. Zooming back up, the sky was empty. The Section lost 1 Hurricane and claimed 3 e/a I saw one e/a go down but it had 2 engines not one like the Stuka's ? Escort Higher Up ?

July 1940

Took my first flight in earnest today. A quick stroll down to Rye, near Hastings, to supervise the activities of the boffin squad with their monstrous iron latticeworks that they call Chain Home. Why they call it that I have no idea, we all joke that it probably does nothing except attract lightning strikes and provide the local seagulls with a comfortable nesting place. No sign of Jerry, just a leisurely cruise around the coast at 21,000 ft with A flight tagging along a few miles behind. At one point I glimpsed something behind us and requested permission to detach from the formation to weave behind so that I could keep whatever it was in sight but I soon lost visual contact and rejoined the formation after a few minutes of essing along behind everyone else.

Landing was nothing special, a big bounce because I came in too fast but no close encounters with the fence or stalled engines this time.

Also, I've earned the moniker of "Ace". Not for my prowess in the air but at the bar. The English chaps were somewhat aghast when I showed them how one could ingest five pints in the space of three minutes. Horrible tepid muck they drink here, I wish I'd thought to bring a Coolgardie safe with me.

July 17th Scramble to the coast:

Barely got bread to butter this morning when we were off on a radar contact. Wheels up before seven and to the contact point fifteen minutes later. Ran into a flight of 111's at 14,000 feet taking some vertical pot-shots at our shipping and I winged in after the third one and got him with some none-too-accurate fire. As we were circling around the area, we were attacked by either the recalcitrant escorts or another flight of 109's. For some reason, I couldn't tell the Huns from me mums and one got behind me and got a few shots into me, chipping the paint on both craft and pilot. Despite a stinging pain in arm and leg, I was able to get clear thanks to the intercedence of others in my flight, but I had to bail out a few miles off of shore after I had used up all the petrol. After a week in the hospital, I am able to write this report and should be back in the "game" in a few more days...
Here's the surprisingly clear and in color and cockpit-centric gun camera footage:

Seriously, I can't tell the difference between the hurris and BF's until quite close. Can't wait for those big elliptical wings to show up!

Morning flight over An Army camp Local area. No Contact

2 Section Re enforce Convoy Patrol during the afternoon. Reached the convoy after the e/a hit it. Only 109's high up looking for fodder to fatten their scores. Dis engaged and RTB. As the Sqn Commander said: Leave the flaming fighters , its the bloody bombers we want.

I say, Jolly good show over Convoy Bounty. It was a Sqn show with Red and Blue sections keeping the Fighters off our backs as 2 Section dove on Stukas lining up on the Ships below. I gave off long bursts at a bomber and got hits but as I closed I ran out of ammo. ( I fired too far out and only got hits as I ran out of 303s ). The green painted Stuka Hugged the Ocean and skimmed towards France. I stayed low and RTB. Score 3 JU 87's Destroyed + 1 Damaged ( mine ) The Sgn Loss 1 Hurricane to Fighters + 2 damaged.

2 Section was over Convoy Botney Bay circling when we got jumped. The 1st to go down was the Weaver machine ( black smoke off to the rear left ) then we scattered. The enemy did a good job that day. They hit us high and hit the convoy low, Someone said Stukas but all I saw was 109s behind and one overshot and dove away from me. ( 3 Yellow Nosed a/c ) I saw 2 ships get blasted by bombs as I ran down low.. Then it was over so RTB. Score: 2 Hurricanes destroyed ( 2 Missing ) 1 109 claimed.

Aug 8, 1949.

Afternoon : The bell in the Ops shack was ringing someone yelled its a Sqn Scramble. We ran to get up all 12 Hurri's , but I was thinking He must be Crackers. As we lifted off, the Sqn C.O. was talking on the RT and Top Hat said where to Head to Southamptom Angles 12, Buster 20 + Very soon came Tally Ho. Off to the right above and a few below Yellow Nosed Bandits . I dove and was lining up on a 109 when another unseen fighter put 9 hits in my kite Between me and the Tail section. ( later my Flt Lt would say I was lucky. If the e/a would used his cannon instead of MG's my Tail would have come off. ) Twisting I got out of the way and saw a 109 above. I pulled up and fired , maybe a few hits ? , then Stalled. I barely pulled up above the water. RTB Score: We lost another Hurricane Pilot KIA.

After many days of empty skies, we were called in to handle an incoming raid, expected Bombers 5+ with a small escort. We made contact over the channel and moved to engage. My longtime wingman Luke Corwin broke off for home almost immediately, whether from engine failure or damage I do not know.

He looked to have a clear shot home so I closed quickly on my target, a JU 88, and quickly dispatched him. Two Jerries jumped for a swim before the plane smashed into the water. Seeing the other bombers under threat from the other Hurricanes, I moved to try to catch up to Luke and ensure he made it back safe.

To my horror, when I closed the distance I found him being engaged by four BF110s. I immediately pulled the plug, slammed the throttle forward and dove down amongst the Jerries, hoping to distract them long enough for Luke to escape. The pack scattered as I flashed passed, two disengaging and heading for home. Unfortunately, one managed to stay on Lukes tail and I watched helplessly as his Hurricane caught fire and pitched downward toward the Channel. I couldn't see if there was a chute, but I hastily engaged the 110.who dispatched Luke. After a protracted fight, I seperated him from his port wing and watched with satisfaction as the burning hulk disappeared below the waves with its full crew abord.

Jacob Fry also did not return from the mission. No-one saw him go down, so we hold out hope for his return.

17 Aug 1940.

On Patrol with 2 Section near Burnemouth. Spotted and attacked some e/a. I got mixed in with a flight of Heinkills. Closed to 200 yds and pushed the trigger. My 303's got strikes all over the bomber then smoke and fire out of the Port motor. Fired another burst, more smoke then the e/a rolled over and went into a spin. No Chutes were seen. I couldnt watch more , as 109s were swarming about. I did get a bit of one 109 as my ammo ran out. I did a split S and dove for home. The Sqn Claimed 6 e/a destroyed for 3 losses . 2 pilots bailed out and returned that afternoon.

On patrol with 6 a/c near Southhampton. Vectored to intercept 18+ Bandits at 15000 ft over the channel. The e/a turned into 5 Ju88 types + a Lot of ME 110s as escorts. My mates got 2 Bombers and I got a squirt at one the it was a free for all with the 110s. I almost got the chop when one zoomed behind me ( took 8 MG rds , glad the rest missed ) Broke to port and corked screwed down to 3000 ft and went home. Sgn Claimed 3 Destroyed. I saw a bomber go down 2 chutes came out. We lost a Hurri. The Sqn is only at Haft strength Replacements are due in.

Nice catch there, with the explosion, carrick!

I think this video is pretty neat. We are scrambled in on some bombers, who start their dives just as we attack. It was pretty awesome watching everybody perform their roles. I got one bomber down and then the escorts attacked! Despite my best efforts, I managed to get my engine shot out, after previously having taken some control surface damage. (And to be fair, I was distracted by a really cool visual I had never seen before, of what I think was a big oil slick from a sunken ship. I then tried to make my way back towards the convoy before ditching. Fortunately, I was picked up and back to the squadron by the next day! (I dunno, the helicoptered me out, I guess...)

16 sorties so far. However, Hes been on the short end of the stick a few times and often not hitting anything. P.S. I do make him AVOID the Fighters. Mostly Roll over and dive or Split " S ". I am having a lot of fun with this game.

I say, had a party over the channel this morning. The section was vectored to Bandits off Southhampton. Turned out to be fighters. We had 2 109s high and to port in the rear and 2 below going left to right. It was follow the leader and I dove after my section leader to keep his tail clear. The 2 Bandits above dove on us in turn. A regular Traven punch up. I never got in close enough for good shooting just Long Range hope to hit shots. My mates got 2 of the Yellow Nosed boys, but we lost one Hurri who was flying in formation as the Weaver.

Well, that must be the secret! I am a bit behind in the video posting, I have another one where I definitely do NOT avoid the fighters! Good thing character creation is so easy!

So I thought I cleared him...they should really call this game WWII: Collision Simulator for me. The plus side is I got to try out the 109, which is a lot more finicky and for some reason has a lot of gauges not in English. The Prop Pitch gauge looks like a clock, so I thought for a minute there that I had actually activated the Flux Capacitor and gone back in time...

Old "Ace" Pilto is grounded still grounded due to his namesake having a new job. Long weekend coming up though so the possibilities of him dusting off the flying (and writing/maybe video making) cap are increasing.

Aug 27, 1940.

Blimey, They Bombed Eastbourne. 2 Section + 2 Top cover a/c was on Patrol and caught a flight of 5 He 111s leaving the area. My wing-mates got 2 that I saw along with 2 parachutes swinging down. They Claimed 3 Bombers. As tail end Charlie , I made sure no fighters were about then closed on a bomber Making firing passes I got hits but he would not go down then he was diving for France. My kite was behaving badly, The e/a gunners had scored 7 hits in my port wing and another 4 in my tail so called it a day. Claimed a probable.

Sorties #2 &3

Second flight was a scramble over the channel where we ran into a flight of 109's. I was trying to climb with them when one dove on me and shredded my right wing with cannon fire. I looked at the damage model, remarking to myself on the detail, before heading for home and bailing out along the coast.
My next sortie was tangling with a wily and squirrelly 110, whom I finally shot the engine out of and watched from a safeish distance as he made his way down to the cold waters of the channel, where I had been just a sortie before.

Made what I finally think are some reasonably nice diving attacks. Got two out of formation, but lost them in the clouds, no confirmation...

Our 5 a/c Sqn obited Esher ( South London ) at Angels 15. When Control vector us 20+ Bandits as Back up to another Sqn attacking. A/c were scattering in all directions. I spotted 5 Me 110's above us and one below us. Its was help yourself time. I dove on the 110 and started giving him long bursts at 300 yards and closed spotted hits all over then 2 chutes came out. Next, Dickie Bird was yelling Tally ho bombers below the cloud layer. Circling back , I saw Dickie get one . I closed on the other fireing 1 Four Second burst I got hits then nothing The ammo was gone. I did a wing-over as the e/a left a smoke trail towards France. Out of the cloud layer a diving Me 110 Bounced me then left. I landed very carefully at Gatwick with 21 MG hits in the fuselage + 9 MG hits in the port wing and maybe 2 20mm hits near the elevator.

Shouldnt the landing be made on the Grass next to the Runway ? Instead of Blocking the Runway ? I remember seeing movies clips of B-17's, 1`2 O clock high and Memphis Belle, Where damaged a/c put down off Runway.

Aug 30, 1918. Down for Maintenance today and hoping more replacements will be sent up. My American Friend over in 74 Sqn Sqn sent over an American Pin up of a use for Bar wire that my side never thought of. I say, it is a Novel Idea.

Hee hee, yes of course it should! But see I did not know that my gear was up, the G key and I have a strange relationship. Sometimes it seems to work and then sometimes I have to push it several times. So I had quite a surprise at my touchdown, fortunately it was a good approach!

Nice pics, by the way, carrick!

Sgn Scramble cover Base, Off Both Sections went 12 a/c in all. The flights curved up climbing at full power. Top Hat came on saying 30+ Over base, angles 12, Buster. In all the heavy clouds , I couldnt see any thing. at 3000 ft I spotted Flack over Tangmere and yelled Tallyho Flying over the AF the Bombers had already dropped. Still in a nose high attitude the Escort Hit us. I got mixed up with Three 109s . I broke right with my wingman and slipped in a cloud but they hit my wingman puking smoke he bailed. I came out of the cloud layer and spotted a 109 lower and slow so dove on him . Pushing the trigger , my 303's cut into the e/a. Belching dark smoke, he went don getting lower till his wing caught a tree. After that I chased the flack burst chasing more 109s. RTB. The Sgn lost 2 a/c both pilots bailed out. claims 3 .

Love the first pic... only thing that could improve it is if all the aircraft had different skins instead of the same skin repeated.

Sep 8, 1940.

Morning Patrol Gosport: No contact.

Afternoon Scramble : Yellow section was the 1st to get Airborne ( 2 min 10 sec ) of the Sqn's 11 a/c. Vectored South of London at 10000 ft. , The flight Leader added 2,000 ft more. and turned towards the flack bursts . As we approached another set of flack was going off to the port then 5 Bombers appeared out of the clouds in front. We attacked line astern ( I damaged one ? ) then we scattered. I came back around for another shot Closed then banked right to avoid a collision. Taking hits, I did a wing over and took more hits. Breaking out below, I headed towards the closest base ( West Malling ) The motor on my kite went U/S and fuel was leaking. I was going to Pancake (. a la Mr Wiggins ) but the landing Gear was U/S also. the Temp gauge was going off the clock so I Bailed Out. Score: 2 Hurricanes destroyed + 3 Damaged. E/a 5 Claimed + 1 Probable+ 1 damaged. He 111's ?

I love the fact that when you hear ''bandits at 9 o'clock above us'' when you look in that direction they are actually there!

Yes, but it does get a bit weird when enemies show up mid-fight and your flight leader is no longer in the same horizontal plane or cardinal orientation as you. In future phases I feel like we could use at least some slightly expanded comms... salute

Up chasing fighters S.E. London area. I say, wish the ops people could tell the difference of fighters from bombers. B Flight had the duty and was posted as re-reinforcements. I couldnt get close enough gave a few squirts at 1000 yds, but couldnt hit a sausage. Red section claimed 2 kills a 109 ( I saw it complete with chute ) and a Me 110. Yellow section lost 1 Hurricane when we were bounced by Me 110's.

Just when I'm thinking I'm getting to be a bit of a boss at this BoB malarkey, I start a pilot in the second stage of BoB; one uneventful patrol, then a scramble. Early on in the fight I get a 109 on my tail and can't shake him, he starts to land hits. I break down low and head to a nearby airfield. As I approach bombs explode on a nearby hill, it looks like the enemy missed the airfield and hit St Mary's church instead! I appreciate this brilliantly timed spectacle seen through driving rain and approach the airfield thinking all will still be well. But my pressure is suddenly falling, the engine dies as I approach,... no bother, I can still put down....

Except for a tree I couldn't see under my nose and with no power or speed was unable to weave to see.

Dead after two flights; never underestimate the task at hand.

No wonder all your flight keep getting killed... there are a lot of 'unlucky for some' marked planes out there!

Morning Patrol over an Arms work No contact

Afternoon: Ops shot off a flair and off we went off trying to get airborne. Over the Radio telephone came from Top Hat to Obit South London Trade is 20+ angels 10, Red Section came on saying they would cover as Yellow section attacked. Yellow leader Tally ho'ed the e/a. I could see 3 a/c amid flack burst then break and turn trying to line up for a burst. It was dicey playing with the Me 110's amid the clouds. None for me, but the flight of 6 Hurri's claimed 2 e/a. 3 of ours were damaged.

Sep 11, 1940. I got the "Chop" on my 2nd outing over London today.

1100 hrs Scramble: The Sqn's 6 a/c got off alright, but we were late ( Controller ? Ops ? ) Anyway by the time we got there the enemy was going home .

Approximately 1445 hrs The flair was fired by ops and off we went, Control vectored towards S.E. London 30+ angles 20000ft Never made it, We got hit by 109's near Brighton as we were claiming. I spotted 6 of them coming down and Ack Ack fire off to the left More e/a ?. then It was dog eat dog. I was the flight Lt's wing-man so when a fighter got on his tail , I pulled in behind and gave him a 4 sec burst. ( got a few hits too ). Unfortunately, his wing mate got behind and did me in with MG fire, The Hurri's motor sputtered and puked black smoke Tenp off the clock, cooling system gone so went over the side getting banged around in the slip stream. Landed out in sticks of the city so hobbled over to a Lorrie repair shop and the attendant, https://giphy.com/gifs/rockabilly-machineshop-rocker-4HianAHkEeIYMyBYgi/fullscreen, gave me a lift. I will be with the medics for awhile.

Nicely done, Notting. I feel sure we have gone through a squad of Hurri's between us!

Bloody hell Rick... that Hun pilot was throwing that 110 around like a single engine fighter!
His gunner was also getting hits on you even after all that violent jockeying around!!!

Indeed. I guess he stopped shooting at the end because he had thrown up his pea soup all over the windscreen. Or maybe he was dead.

I had not seen the bullet hole damage decal before, that was nice, especially with the wind whistling effect. It was also a nice touch how the damaged gear wouldn't lock down but still held for the landing. Just pleasant surprises all the time!

Sep 21, 1940. Glad to be away from the Medico's. I say, Frightful place Male Nurses all over. 145 Squadron back to full strength off went 12 a/c on a 1500 hrs Scramble to intercept over London. I spotted 5 bombers weaving amid Ack Ack. I was element leader so when I closed and started getting hits, I became surprised when bullets flew pass my port side Breaking right, I found it was my wingman P/O Leary firing at my target. I circled and found another fat Bomber racing , empty, for France. I fire a number of 4 Sec Bursts as I closed from 300 yards. Smoke puked form the e/a starboard engine and his wing tip was sheered off. E/a went down somewhere by Harlow. I was alone so RTB. The sgn claimed 3 that day ,but we Lost the Sqn Commander. ( we kept his Lorrie since it was not Government equipment and re-assigned my wingman to A Flight . )

Section Scramble: Climbing over Brighton we could see the Ack Ack smoke so flew towards it. Flight Leed called Tally Ho low and to the left 4 fast moving a/c, I spotted 5 Bandits high and to the right then as we turn to for line astern 2 of our replacement pilots came together with Fire and smoke bot went down. No chutes were spotted. 4 more fast moving e/a joined from starboard side. I chased 2 fighters giving pots shots then joined up with Flight Lt. Dudley ( his a/c was smoking ) The sound was like a Rainstorm of Rocks as the motor stopped then a Me 110 shot by. I could see a 109 in the mirror diving for the kill so I bailed out. The e/a clipped my useless kite as it passed and was destroyed. I landed near Kenley AF. Lost 6 a/c from B flight. 4 KIA, 2 bailed out ( Myself and Lt Dudley. Claims 0. or 1 by midair ?

The Brass Hats gave me the bomber that I shot down a few days back as a probable . Orders came down 145 Sqn is on the move to Scotland for Reforming and Rest. Its about time too , We are down 4 a/c ,but one is a Hanger Queen. No Sqn Commander , and only 5 pilots. I will be driving up there since I dont have an a/c and we kept the Old C.O.'s lorrie for transportation. The Chats chipped in their Ration Coupons and a little cash. I took the lorrie down to the Repair shop in town for Used Tires. I must say, Helping the attendant looking in the shelves was a treat.

Big fight over a convoy. As we my schwarm attacked we could other a/c swarming in a Bee hive over ships. I saw 1 go down and a chute opened then I got one that I chased towards England. His Chute also opened. The Red fuel bulb would be coming on soon so scooted home.

Wow, carrick, they're simply irresistible!

Due to a terminal case of ram-itis, Connor O'Connor is no more, but Bruno Kurtz is on the rise! I actually saw my first Spitfires and spent some time trying to decide if it was a Hurricane or a 109 before it turned and gave me a look at that big beautiful elliptical wing! I got a shared and will hopefully get another confirmed singly for the most recent flight:

pro-tip: the brakes key is apparently momentary and not a toggle...

Pol, can we get shared kills? Pretty please!

A Flight was off duty for maintenance so B fight had Patrol over Convoy Angel. Lumba called 12 + bandits to your East at 18000. Ok Lumba, then told green section to cover us . Yellow 2 called Tallyho on a 110 high and we gave chase then I spotted a flight of Bombers at our level off to port. As I called Line Astern ,. 4 109s hit us. Scattered, I closed on one and got chunks off the wing then smoke . The e/a went down near mid Channel. No chute. We lost 2 a/c.

Convoy Attack

So...ship hunting... which I was supposed to do on an earlier mission but didn't because I didn't know that was a thing... I mean, I know the 109 has cannons and all, but I thought "Isn't that what we have bombers for?" So I was wondering what we were doing at 1500 meters the whole flight and when we got to the attack zone I was like "CLIMB! CLIMB!" Then I spent 20 minutes circling around wondering where everybody was! But not this time!

It's pretty cool. There will probably have to be some graphics work on later phases but definitely a good start!

When I did the ship hunting missions, I honestly thought I was there to simply escort some Stuka's, because let's face it, even with cannons, you just aren't going to fatally damage or sink a large ocean going ship!
I just stayed as high cover waiting for some RAF types to show up, (never did) and then flew back to the airfield.
The immersion factor went straight out of the window there and then I'm afraid frown

lol... if only 20mm's were needed to sink ships, then there would be no need for bombers or torpedo planes. The jerries could have saved themselves a shed load of money biggrin

Although my duties since returning to the Fatherland keeps me away from flying, I do get the chance to put in a few with 1 JG 2. We were flying at 20000 Trolling for English Fighters no luck today.

You could probably empty your guns into the bridge for the sake of immersion. A fairly common practise for those without some big boom boom slung underneath. (I doubt you'd get any practical value from doing so in game though but you never know, CFS3 had you strafing ships IIRC)

July 19,1940 My schwarm was covering bombers attacking a Convoy when We could see a/c down low fighting and zooming then over the RT came " Achtung Spitfires " Two fighters at 4 o clock and diving on us. As we scattered and twisted, I got off a shot then he was gone in a turn. I heard over the RT Falcon # 4 got 1. then it was reform and home.

24 Jul 1940.

Our mission was to attack shipping. Our cover Kette was attacked by the English. They were high and to the port by the time my kette swung around , my fuel was down to just above 30% . My kette flipped over and dove for France. I ended up landing at Le Harv AF out of juice. Top Cover lost 2 a/c for 3 claimed. Recommended to the Gruppe Commander to move all aircraft closer to the Channel. Our 109's don't have the legs this far back

30 Jul 1940.

Bailed out over the Channel after getting hit by fighters. My schwarm was on offensive patrol off Dippe whe I spotted two fighters high. Turning and climbing to chase 2 Hurricane types appeared on my six a Few hits later my eng was somkin and part of my wing fell off. Nothing to do but Bail Out.
No claims but we lost 2 more a/c. Lucky for me, I was picked up by a HE 115 and transferred to a Fishing Trawler.

It depended on the situation, but based on my readings for a lot of rescued English pilots it was same day delivery to their airfield if they were not wounded.

Im sure it was a similar situation for the Germans as well.

On orders by Gruppe, I was to take command of 4 Staffel as their C.O. had been shot down over England. I had the enlisted paint a yellow 1 on my machine so I could be seen if the RT went out. After that, I took the Staffel up two times today over Boxhall and Hastings Trolling for fighters to come up. Nothing but Flack.

I wad recently reading Last of the Few by Max Aitkens. One of the pilots described a story of crash landing near his airfield after being heavily damaged in a dogfight, only to be back up in the air on another patrol within 30 minutes of touching the ground. That would have to get to you emotionally.

Tough to find time to fly these days! Even less time to crash!

Jeremy Pluck
The fighting 56th!
Mission 2 - now, after claiming the kill, the window came back in a weird ratio (way too large) and I could never click on the continue button, so I had to kill the game from the task manager. Therefore this is one of those missions that takes place in an alternate universe and won't show up on the official tally...still fun though!

My pilot got the C H O P today. His staffel was over the same areas Clearing Frane test fire guns, then Enemy Coast ahead, check fuel Make a right turn over the tall towers on towards Box Hall. 2 Enemy fighters called and we chased Horrido ! 1 down by my schwarm as I chased mine low over Lympe AF . A few test shots at him for range and lead then FLACK all over. One broke with a roar then sputter smoke blood in the cockpit. I headed for the coast but hit the ground . Like strawberry jam , My Pilot was spread all over the place KIA. Moral of the story: Dont chase low over enemy Airfields with flack guns.
KAPUT.

(Mechanic comes in to the waiting room as you are watching the Maury Povich show) "Well, sir, I think we tracked down your problem sir. Seems your plane is a big flaming wreck in the middle of a field. We're going to do an oil change and then send you on your way, I just came in here to show you the condition of your air filter. Now we can replace that for $19.95. And, of course, on a big flaming total loss like this, we also recommend a transmission flush, which I can get you the manager's special at just $149.95. So if you can just sign here, we'll get started. Oh, and the coffee should be out shortly. Sorry, all we have is decaf..."

Bagged a ME 110 today and shared in a Stuka. B flight was directed by Lumbra control over the Convoys at Margate. Upon arriving we spotted down low a flight of Stukas just finishing up on a Convoy 2 ships were sinking. Flight Leader yelled Tally ho then we went down. My wing-mate and I banged away at a Stuka then Me 110's dropped on us ( I saw 2 ,but the may have been 4 ) I was able to get off Two 4 second bursts and he fell apart.

B Flight went up with 5 and came back with 4 Hurri's. We were orbiting Chain Home near Margate and caught 3 a/c Snoopers or weather ships. Leader called line abreast ,but Yellow 4 ( P/O Rowland ) shot ahead closed the e/a and midair crash ! Just too Keen to come to grips with the enemy.? I saw both go down.

I did a little exploring and found where the Boffins hang out. I thought that they could explain this Chain Home ( the tall towers along the coast that we circle above) thing. However, No luck. The Prof. was very cheerful, but I still dont have a clue.

Man, busy week!

Jeremy Pluck
The Fightin' 56!
Here's another brief encounter. We were vectored in south-east of Mersea just after my first cup of tea. Expecting bombers, we ran into a flight of 109's about 200 feet above us. We met them in a climbing turn and then we formed a chain of everyone-shoot-the-guy-in-front-of-them-whilst-avoiding-the-bloke-behind-them. I got some nervous shots on the fellow attacking Leader, but never got to follow through with the kill. After several round-abouts, Jerry headed for home and despite slamming the throttle to the stop, I couldn't make any headway and watched them go. As I was circling back, I did see one enemy A/C going down with a dead prop and was able to provide confirmation for one of my squad mates...

Ended up a dangerous day with two of us lost against at least two of them...

A short and violent fight : Well done. I would think most of the fights at that time were short and violent

Its a Sqn Scramble: Off we went and checked in with Top Hat, Vector mid Channel of f Southamton. Re- reinforce Convoy Cover ( 303 ? ) Buster Angels 10000. Coming to Grips , we spotted Stukas attacking the second line of ships. B flight stayed high, I joined A flight attacking 2 Stukas down low. Never got in position to fire saw 2 e/a go down. Started to rejoin and heard RT calls of Tallyho. Spotted and chased a 109 all over the channel . Finally, he turned for home so cut across his flight path and used the rest of my ammo. The e/a's motor cut out and in he went Splash, one Me 109. I was by then alone so put about and RTB. We claimed 5 destroyed for 3 losses.

The Fightin' 56th Squadron!
Another scramble to Margate. Seems the RDF has a hair up its bum over the North Sea entrance to the Channel...Anyway, it was at least later in the morning so we got a proper breakfast...As we were circling our ships, we spotted a flight of bombers west of us, closer to shore! Heading in, I attacked one, but Kennicot with his steadier hand finished the bugger off!
I thought I was going to go home empty handed (again) when I spotted explosions near our ships back to the east. I headed out that way and ran into a whole flight of Heinkels! Settling in on the leader, I was able to take him down but only after he put seven holes in my left wing and shot away the controls for my gear and flaps. That necessitated a rough belly landing at the field and a new plane and pair of trousers for me!

Convoy Patrol : The sgn's 8 a/c arrived on station over Convoy Empire at 1110 hours , Only to have 4 Me 110's dive on us no warning from control. The fight lasted a long time , I banged away but couldn't hit a sausage then the guns hissed empty. so dove away as one was heading for me. The score was 1 to 1 so we drew even in losses.

Intercept: B flight's 5 a/c were sent out over the channel and connected with a 4 a/c enemy bomber flight. I say , a hot one took 3 hits in my kite, but I did damage one. The Boys knocked down 3 of the e/a in that fight. 1 Hurricane was shot down no one saw a Chute.

I am still messing about in Quick Scenarios as I haven't had the time to start a proper Campaign. Here is a general DMR from a recent QS mission. winkngrin

S!Blade<><

A mid morning patrol mission and all is quiet until I spot a lone He111 down low trying to sneak in amid the cloud cover. His navigator must have miscalculated their bearings and seemingly he has now separated himself from the large formation of axis bombers being reported just to the South of us by Fighter Command. Our Squadron leader had to return to base when his Hurricane was streaming a slight bit of oil and his oil pressure gauge was fluctuating wildly. He relinquished his command to me and I accepted the Flight Leader role for the duration of the mission. My nerves are on edge as I roll over and lead my two mates down to attack this lone bomber.

[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

I am hell bent on not letting this Jerry unload his bombs on any British targets. I know he is looking for any target of opportunity and I don't have much time to dispatch him before he will unleash his eggs and inflict the punishment which he is determined to deliver. As I maneuver into a firing position I let loose one burst which must have killed the top gunner. I settle in behind the He111 and ask my mates to scan for any Jerry fighter cover that might be about. I fire on my target and score numerous hits.

[Linked Image]

The He111 is shredding into pieces as I pour my 303s ammunition into it, and the bomber is slowly disintegrating.

[Linked Image]

I pore on the coals with short burst after short burst of my 303s and the He111 is becoming a mangled death trap for the Jerries inside. I can only assume the pilots controls are jammed from the damage being inflicted by my eight guns, as he is flying on straight and level and has not tried to evade my attack. For a bomber in a group this would be normal, but a single bomber would usually maneuver to try and thwart my attack. These Jerries are only along for the death ride as I push my attack relentlessly.

[Linked Image]

I know the top gunner is not dead now because I can see him fighting his guns trying to free what surely must be a jam as I assault the bomber at my leisure. I am firing only short bursts to keep my 303s cool and conserve my ammunition in case we are jumped by 109s. I trust my mates to spot any Jerries, but one never knows where they can come from and surprise you. They love to attack out of the sun where one cannot see them pressing their assault.

[Linked Image]

Only the crew of this He111 know the hell that exists within its' fuselage right this moment. The hot shrapnel from the bullets I am unleashing on them is taking its toll and the suffering is immense. Death searches them each out as their bomber slowly is dying in and of itself. The protection it has so bravely offered each of them is slowly being broken.

[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

Death took its toll as the He111 finally gave up her life and plummeted towards the water. I watch her smoking badly and on fire now, and as she goes down I see two parachutes emerge. For those two Jerries the war is over, but for the others still in the He111 the war is over in a very different way. They are on their way to a watery grave encapsulated in a fiery tomb.

[Linked Image]

As we fly over and confirm my kill I search my heart as to what I have just done. It is a hollow feeling to have been so charged up to get a kill and stop the enemy and then contemplate the cost. While exhilaration runs through my veins my heart aches for the hell I have just unleashed on another man. War is a heavy burden, even for a righteous cause.

[Linked Image]

As I and my mates fly on to return to our patrol sector my wing man shouts out, "Fighters! seven o'clock high!!! I look up and see three Bf109s rolling over to dive in and attack us.

[Linked Image]

Clearing my mind I call break and we each take evasive maneuvers. My two mates each roll over and split s off to the right and the left.

[Linked Image]

I pulled up and rolled over to my left to dive into the clouds nearest my Hurricane. My enemy has the advantage and the clouds are my best defense. I now must fight to save my life and my adversary rightfully deserves my respect. I will try to maneuver myself into a place of advantage or a place of safety. In the clouds I hope to gain his six or.... lose him and survive to fight another day. I ask The Lords' help in this endeavor.

[Linked Image]

As I scream towards the clouds I can see one of the Bf109s diving on me with a high rate of overtake. He is almost within guns range as I get closer to the clouds. I see him level out and watch as I enter the clouds, seemingly not wanting to follow me in. Does he not have the nerve to follow me in? Or maybe he is low on petrol,... or maybe he is out of ammo?? I notice my heart is pounding on my chest as if to leap from it.

[Linked Image]

Once in the clouds I bank left towards England just to make sure Jerry doesn't have an easy shot on me if he followed me in. As I ease off the stick and descend to the West I hear my wing man scream over the radio," I am hit and going down!!! ....Nooooooooo! I scream!!!

[Linked Image]

I level out in the clouds and key my mic, "Roger, Roger,.... mate come in!!!.... Roger!!!!" After all of the chaos, silence should be a welcome friend to me but I would give anything, even my victory over that bomber to hear Rogers voice.. to know he was alive.....

[Linked Image]

As I clear the clouds I am alone, the sun is shining with nothing but the roar of my engine and the sight of my sweet home England playing to my eyes. Tears roll from my eyes as I accept that Roger is gone and Kent has not radioed in. I am alone. I am merely a boy in the middle of a war, trying to survive....

[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

After landing and securing my trusted Hurricane I am debriefed and head straight to the pilots pub to raise a drink to the memory of Roger and Kent and our Beloved England. "We lost two good pilots today, but we fight for Freedom so their lives were not given in vane!!!"
But for the Grace of my God, there go I ! This was not my day, so I shall fight on offering up my life for the cost of a Free England!

[Linked Image]

After a fitful nights sleep, hearing the bombing in London, I am back in my Hurricane early in the morning ready for another go at Jerry!

The Fightin' 56! (I am trying to get this to take off with my mates, but it hasn't happened yet!)
North Weald

Our lunch-time patrol ran into a flight of bombers! Their escorts being extremely tardy, we settled in behind them almost in formation! The AA started up and I was fearful of a collision or being hit by Archibald... In my timidity, I failed to down a bomber, but when the escorts finally did show up, things went a little differently...

The Fightin' 56!
North Weald
August 1st

The heat of summer is in full force, creating a miasma of fog and smoke over the lands. We took off on an early morning patrol to the North Sea (again!) and ran into a lower flight of bombers headed east. With the cloud cover down around 8000 feet, they had nowhere to hide as we settled in behind them. I fired off over 1500 rounds into one but he refused as to so much as smoke in my presence! As I pulled away for another pass, Thomas dove in and finished the berk off with two rounds! I swear!

Pol, the fog effect is cool at low level, but higher up it just reads as gray, and the effect where it just disappears all of the sudden, like at 3:04, is very jarring. Maybe it would be best to pull it out until some dithreing or some dx11 effect helps out?

Rick, why did you open fire so far away from that 88?
I know you were getting some hits, but I reckon you would have plastered it with a lot more if you had got much closer before you opened up.

In all seriousness, if I had parked behind him, I would have done better, which is what the AI sort of does, but I feel that is probably ahistorical and bombers should probably be a bit deadlier yet, or formations tightened, as has been mentioned...

Not directly related to the comments here, but as luck would have it we have new behaviour for lone or deteched bombers in the next patch (all being well). They will jink and try to make it more difficult for you.

Been Rainy and finally cleared up then Scramble. The Sqn's 12 a/c ran into swarms of the sods near Boxhall. 109's . Blimey it was a punch out and total confusion. I was hot one one when my wingman stole my kill then went in a cloud came out and took hits . Flipping over and back into a cloud layer . I lost everyone so RTB. Everything was ok till my landing gear collapsed and I did 360's all over the Northolt Runway. The station Commander said that I was a Messy Chap and not to park on his runway. We lost 4 a/c and claimed 2 109,s. I crashed but was ok, 1 pilot bailed,. 2 KIA and 1 wnd. Not a good day.

My first actual Campaign Mission. Wow, that was fun. We flew out over the Ship Convoy and intercepted 3 JU88s. Diving from about 1000 ft above while following my Flight Leader was awesome. The sound of the engine winding up and howling was very cool. I helped tag team one JU88 so I put a claim in for it. I took out a JU87 on my own , again diving on it from well over 500 ft above. I saw this one crash and burn, so I put a claim in for that one also. WOTR runs really well for me on my old rig with a good 40-59 FPS and almost no stutters at all. I am very impressed. Well I am off work tomorrow and I see a very unproductive day ahead. Hopefully I can get my accuracy up from 13%. yep
Adger I am glad you enjoyed the AAR and pics. There are some great pics by many different people and the reports in this thread are really good. It is going to be hard to make anymore like that because I don't think I am going to want to pause and take the pics and disturb what is happening real time. salute

Edit: I forgot that I did pause and take this one picture of the JU87 before I ripped it a new one and watched it crash and burn. Once you are in the fight it is just hard to stop. It is an immersion killer for me. I may have to learn how to use and edit FRAPS again. It has been years though since I have used it.

Man, that is some nice work right out of the gate, Blade! Don't worry about the accuracy, I know from experience that they don't charge by the bullet!

Yes, not bad at all considering P/O Wednsforth is not even 19 years old yet. Of course he lied on his application to the RAF because he could wait no longer to fight the jerrys in the air. He was top of his class during Flight Training and he seeks Honor through Victory in defeating Adolf's Germany.
HeHe, Rick it is a good thing they don't charge by the bullet or old Wednsworth might be peeling potatoes. Some of the other Squadies were showing upwards of 40% accuracy. I can only hope to get that efficient. winkngrin

0810 Hrs: Patrol Ford Area. No Contact

1210: Sqn Patrol 9 a/c Margate Approaches to the Thames. Over the target contacted Lumbra Control vectored to 12 + Bandits angles 15. The e/a turned into 109's 5 or 6 diving on us in B flight. Scatteed and took 2 second pot shots trying to clear each other tails. I got credit for damage to one, but didnt see any go down the Sgn lost two.

Scramble for B flight. Our 5 a/c was alerted to snoopers over Chain Home at Beachy Head. The bandit were 4 Me 110's 2 low and to the port . The other two high and to starboard. Most of my flight dove on the lower two, my wing man and I took the Higher pair. As everyone swirled and zoomed I managed to damage a 110 that came past so Hammer down and a few parts fell off. Chased till I spotted the French Coast with Ack Ack coming up so RTB. Score 3 Me 110's claimed no losses. just holes in 4 a/c.

Aug 20 1940.

We had 9 a/c on a 10 min. Alert and got Scrambled twice. The 1st Time,, the notice was late and by the time we were over Beachy Head the e/a were close to France so it was a wash out.
The 2nd Time, we caught 5 Bomber types near Portsmouth None for me,but the chaps nailed 2 and damaged the rest. We lost one due to collision with e/a.

11 Jul 1940..

Escorted Stukas for a convoy attack ( 5 Stukas + our 5 109's ) I was low as the English attacked . I chased a slow fighter then the Spitfires from High up dove on us. They say it was turn and burn as two Spits dropped on mt tail crisscrossing me with MG's fire. I was shot up, but made it back. No losses ,but a bad experience.

I got a scramble before I had really settled into the squadron! We broke free of the mists and rains at 12,000 feet and climbed to 15,000 headed SE out over where the Thames meets the sea. For a London boy like me, the sky is a pretty big place! Eventually the RDF got us to the right place, and Leader called out for the bandits, which I couldn't see, but everybody broke up. I stayed with my wingman, as I was instructed to do, but eventually we were attacked by 110's, the ones with the two engines! Colton, my wingman, collided with one and I almost did the same! The tailgunner took out my engine and despite my best efforts, I couldn't get it started again! I managed to get my gear down and land along a road, but as I did so, and to my horror, Kenny Gunn's Hurricane came smashing down into the ground with a tremendous explosion! So despite our flights having shot down several of theirs, it was still a dark day for the squadron!

July 14th

Finally a clear day. We've been sodding the last several without a sign of the enemy. (Except for A flight. They always seem to bag a few. Never tell us where they are even though we have radios!)
We ran into a flight of bombers, which we were able to split up. I fired at two of them and damaged one enough to put in a claim for it, with my new wingman Dan Davis as my witness. (I think "Dan Davis" has good symmetry with "Nigel Neville". so I have a good feeling about him!)
Somewhere along the way, my oil pressure dropped and my engine seized, but I managed a reasonable landing at the field by Margate. It's going to take a couple of days to repair, so I will be using the loner plane in the interim (yuck!)

Mid July...

Went up on a beautiful day! I loved looking at the sun reflecting off the water. Imagine our surprise when the call of "Bandits" went out! They were a thousand feet below and in the zeal of my dive, I over shot them. Racing back up, I took shots at a few but it always seemed as if my squad-mates were there ahead of me. Eventually I got to one that was racing to the south towards Calais. As I was firing, I was hit myself by a big barrage of fire! I looked around but couldn't see anyone... I have a sneaking suspicion that it was one of those berks from A flight trying to sneak another victory! Of course, my engine started its death-throes immediately! In desperation, I fired off a last volley. Much to my surprise, a moment later I saw 2 parachutes fly out of the bomber as it started to spin down towards the sea! I made it over to Manson field and managed to land there even without the engine. They must be getting pretty sick of seeing me by now. I hopped a lorry and made it back to North Weald just in time to see that my plane would be ready for tomorrow's flights... Oh well another day!
