2 More Claimed, Woulda Been Three...

I had the weirdest dream last night: I was taking off from our field on a routine patrol on a clear day when all of the sudden, one of the guys behind me slammed into me, destroying my plane and killing me in the process! Anyway, everything went black for a few minutes and then I woke up and everything was back to normal! Weird...

So, we were scrambled today up to get some 87's inbound from France. I am starting to feel more confident and actually managed to shoot down two of them out over the sea. It would have been a third but my wingman, Dan Davis, came roaring down and crashed into him! ( I do not have a good feeling about him! He better confirm the other two for me if he knows what's good for him!) And then it would have been a(nother) third but I had spent so much ammo on the other two (three) that I ran out on what would have been the third (fourth). Oh, well, at least I didn't die like in my dream!

The older I get, the more I realize I don't need to be Han, Luke or Leia. I'm just happy to be rebel scum...

Pulled a late afternoon scramble yesterday. After an earlier uneventful patrol out by Southend, we were called right back there! There were broken clouds from 4000 to 17000 feet but it was overall a pleasant, if hot summer day. As we reached the RDF contact area, we encountered a flight of bombers approaching from the east and slightly below us. I went after one that broke away from the main flight and shot him down with surprising ease. I then went after three others that had broken away and headed south, eventually overtaking them and shooting each down, although I had my engine shot out in the process. I made a rough landing and was hauled out of my plane by some boisterous boys who had seen my fight! Needless to say, I had to by them all a round! This morning I woke up to see that all my recent claims had caught up to me and I was now a 7 kill ace with a medal to boot! I guess more drinks will now be on the way!

Pol, I am still getting a ton of "Direction Unsure" calls; virtually every sortie where there is contact!

Wrong thread for it, but it is as designed. We chose to do that instead of an AI calling X oclock which is relative to him, and totally wrong for you. Currently we can't make it so it's always correct for player so it is what it is.

That would be fine... I wouldn't expect them to know my orientation anyway...I'd sort it out from there. As it is now, it just feels "buggy", because they wouldn't do that IRL... thumbsup

We were sent out on a routine patrol down to the cliffs today and ran smack into a bunch of Germans! I went after a 110 that was extremely persuasive in his desire not to be shot down. Eventually, he came around to my way of thinking and I saw two chutes fly out. I then headed out far out into the channel in pursuit of another fleeing enemy. It was only then that my craft started to lose power. Seems I was well into yet another shot out engine. I knew this time I would lose the whole plane as there was no way I could glide that far so I dropped some flaps and angled off towards some small fishing craft to the north. A few minutes later, I head a buzzing sound and looked back to see a 109 bearing down on me! I went into my best approximation of an un-powered power dive as I twisted down away from him. Fortunately, he was no better shot as tracers flew past me. I guess he was too embarrassed to attempt another pass as he headed off towards Calais. I was able to glide for a few more miles before hitting the chute at 1200 feet. Picked up none the worse for wear, I was back to North Weald in time to write this by daylight...

Indeed. After a flyable Spit and 110, maybe?

Rick... I cannot believe you just coasted right in front of the nose armament of a 110 ... eek2
Have you got some sort of death wish?

Had a good run today, up by Chelmsford we hit the bombers at 13,000 feet. We chased them south and I even went out into the channel, putting rounds in at least three, although I only got credit for one...

Scramble again with some bombers! Almost got one but then everybody started colliding like drunk monkeys! We lost Ford, Hill, Stanley and Henderson! I was so distraught that on the way back, I was almost shot down by a 109! I never even saw him... I really do need to get around to cleaning off that rear view mirror...

Two more confirmed kills yesterday and I was awarded the Military Cross...but it doesn't matter. We lost three more pilots, including Eytinge, who I had always looked up to. There are only six of us left! Hell of a way to run a war!

Finally made it into August... will this heat never end? It is a relief to get up to 15,000 feet just to feel cold! Anyway, We ran into a mix of bombers and 110's earlier and I put several rounds into several a/c. One 110 ate up most of my ammo before I could convince the crew to bail out, I was worried they would go down to crash, a waste of life, which I guess is all war is really. There, I've gone all glum again...

Hmm...it hurts me to say this, and perhaps I should just have kept my mouth shut...but not for me, this one, I'm afraid, on the evidence I'm seeing here.

It's August 1940 and your incoming raid consists of four 110s and about the same number of Heinkels (too widely-spaced), who must all have been feeling pretty tired of life to try this out in daylight. This seems typical for WoTR. IRL, your average Luftwaffe raid should be in at least Gruppe strength, in close formation, and with comparable escort, close and/or 'frei jagd'. Even the famous Kenley raid by low-level specialists 9/KG76 was in full staffel strength (and was accompanied by a high-level raid by a Gruppe or so of Ju88s IIRC).

Perhaps even Gruppe-sized raids would considerably push up system requirements, as it seems activity well outside the player bubble is modelled as per WoFF. To what real benefits ('supports ability to transfer or fly around on your own' I don't rate in that category) I'm not convinced, given the front (Flanders or Channel) is static. Forget about the whole front thing, concentrate on reproducing immersively and convincingly the raid to be escorted or intercepted IMHO.

And many of the RT calls, while quality recordings and presumably capable of modding, have an unrealistic or lame script. 'Engaging ENEMY target!', as opposed to what - attacking a FRIENDLY one? Instead of just ''Attacking now!', which would have been realistic.

And while you can see the sortie's plan on the map and presumably on the briefing, there's apparently no representation of Ground Control, such a prominent feature of the Battle.

AI-led flights seem to bimble about at low level for rather a long time, which was odd enough in WoFF but way too unrealistic for the Battle, where gaining height quickly was the thing for interceptors, some leaders even adding a few thousand feet to the given altitude as the risk of being bounced by 109s became more apparent.

On a scale between 'pet features' and 'core features,' for a sim of the Battle of Britain, all the above are by any objective standard well towards the latter end of the scale.

Some 110s seem to exhibit UFO-like flight characteristics, though I suppose the horrible instant bail-outs will be patched at some point.

Perhaps the platform will adapt better to the Battle of France or the period of RAF cross-channel ops of 1941-2, but for larger scale ops in an sophisticated air defence system, WoTR isn't ticking enough boxes for me.

I'll put on my tin hat and make my way to the nearest slit trench now, in anticipation of some good-natured strafing by folks who regard the glass as half full or better and liable to improve etc etc, I can only wish that as I had hoped would be the case, I was at this point sharing in your enthusiasm rather than expressing my disappointments.

No need for the tin hat, you make some good points mate!
I'm assuming the engine can't handle the large scale raids for this timescale during the battle, or if it can it was occurring elsewhere on the map smile
I'll certainly agree the 110's are being thrown around like single engine fighters (I've mentioned this before myself)... Historically they should be relatively easy meat to take on.
I'm certainly missing the guidance we should be getting from a sector HQ to home onto an incoming foe.

However, I will hope to see improvements as the game moves forward, and it is early days. Lots of this kind of stuff would surely follow further development, as if we are talking bombing raids over the Reich in future expansions, people will expect to see some pretty large box type formations, with accompanying fighter escort of course.

We shall wait and see biggrin

Can't disagree with any of that, lima. I was just pointing out the comms issue, well, yesterday I think... In addition to what you said, I think the volume of fire should increase from the bombers, although maybe tighter formations would clear that up. As it is, what I like about OBD is that I have a complete product out of the box. If they folded shop tomorrow, I could still play for a long time and have fun. Plus with the current price of thirty bucks and the dearth of anything else remotely close, for me it was a no-brainer! I hope that the product will continue to grow and that most of our concerns will be addressed. I do remember the massive bomber walls of EAW and giddly hope that somehow that will prove to be possible!
