Tanks, Tanks, Tanks! Can't get enough of them apparently biggrin Scoped around on my local gumtree and found a guy (Model Hoarder) who was advertising military models. My new habit was becoming too dear to keep on paying full price so i organised a time to go check out his stuff as he said as he sent me an excel list of just what he could get his hands on easily..

Jagdtigers, Shermans, Panthers, Halftracks, King Tiger, M3's, Pak Guns, 8.8's, Pattons etc plus a ton WWII and later era 1/35 infantry, Fallschirmjager, Kursk MG Squad, Rangers, Machine gun crews, assorted weapons and other bits of kit. In the car and off my lad and we went! At his places he ushers me to the downstairs section of the house and opens the doors to the stash. Amongst about 9 projects on the go ..1/24 Japanese Zero, a 5 foot Bismark with all metal guns and a complete photo etch kit, Warspite built into a semi finished diorama, B58 Hustler needing paint and a beautiful massive B52 kit from the mid '60's is boxes of tanks and assorted infantry and guns that i mosey on over to. After deciding on the Easy Eight and Tiger II (Production Turret version) i stupidly also grabbed a four pack of infantry to go with the original Tiger I i had built. Man, i can't paint 1/35 figures for crapola, but anyway. So we parted with 70 bucks and spent another ten minutes looking at the kits, spread out in three rooms and cupboards. Some of the kits are 50 year old originals, in boxes and never touched, it was just damn cool, felt like a kid in a candy store. I reckon he has about another ten kits i would like so ..thank god for model hoarders!

So, the Easy Eight. Never been a Sherman fan, don't know why. Always thought they didn't have much style..but building this and she has grown on me in a mere matter of days. Really liking the look of it overall, business like yet somehow sexy, maybe it's the turret. Started the kit three days ago but just haven't posted yet so lets do it. Obligatory morning Iced Coffee money shot

A mornings worth of cutting, trimming, trial fitting and glueing

......wheeeeeeels, cleaning them up and trial fit

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

To the paint shop for matt black undercoat and Olive Drab topcoat

[Linked Image]

Rubber black and fit ups of the rolling stock

[Linked Image]

Undercoat for the Olive Drab. I went with the black so i could get a darker tone of the Olive for the finished job.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Two coats of the Olive. All 22 of the guard brackets were a joy to fit, love Tamiya. Just had to scrape off a bit of paint on the rear of the chassis so the top hull would fit neatly.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Track trial fit with wheels on, so much easier and nicer than the four and more piece track kits. I want to keep this build pretty clean so the tracks will just be getting a Dark Iron finish with very minor weathering.

[Linked Image]

Trial fitting the top hull again and realised i had forgotten to paint the underside of the guards. Doh!

[Linked Image]

Adding the six glass windows for the cupola, easier than i thought it would be. Memories of terribly hazy Hurricane and Spitfire cockpits as a kid. Also, more obvious missed paint here as well. Double Doh!!

[Linked Image]

Tracks painted and fitted, yet to be glued. Undersides of guards painted, hull fitted! The kit has been a breeze, not a single issue, everything just fits neat and tight. Everything trims and sands nicely. Makes the T34 Academy i just finished kit seem very third rate.

Ok, i worked out why my pics generally leave me less than happy with what the model actually looks like. I'm a shi**y photographer using all the wrong conditions smile I got annoyed when looking at them as after i take them on my phone, they look really good, once transferred to a 2k screen they look crud. So quick bit of research and hopefully upped my photo game to get a better representation of the actual colours that i am seeing as opposed to what i am posting. Lamps and a white background. It was that easy to get a better picture. Now what i am seeing here at home looks the pretty much the same as what i am posting!

Did the turret and the commander today (sort of looks like a chick) clear matt coated (first time ever) the complete model and applied decals. Still need to do better with my decals..but at least my paint jobs are coming along better as is fit and finish overall i think.

The blur is my still average phone photo skills, or lack of.I'm going to invest in another lamp for my next project as well...and try and hold my phone a bit steadier biggrin

I did a red brown and earth brown mix to get the wood colour for the tools. The red brown was too dark and the earth was too light. Drilled out the end of the .50 cal barrel as it looked terrible with just a flat end, extra track pieces still to be added to the hull, jerry cans for the rear tray, turret cupola hatch still to go on and i'm really up in the air about weathering it. I've done a tiny bit around the wheels and suspension but i like this one clean and don't want to go wrecking it.

Finito! Didn't end up doing hardly any weathering, bit of accent in the rear top grill and a tiny amount on the wheels. Too scared i'll wreck it. Very happy with this one overall although there is still things i could have taken more time on and done better.

Fun build, enjoyed it as much as i did the Tiger and felt like i learned a bit on this one regards primer and clear coating. Also the whole fit three times, glue once. After knocking out three tanks..well two and a half, the T34 was a bit of a mess i am confident stepping up onto this beast in the next couple of weeks...

Love that ambush paint job and looking forward to doing the kit nice and slow and trying to do my best kit yet, the thing is a monster!

The Turret/Commander shot is awesome, it really shows a great paint effort!

Wouldn't have minded a bit more dirt as next to your other two this might look "too new"? But then, at the rate they ignited themselves, the didn't get to rust I suppose... wink

Thanks chaps.

The T34 is turning into a tester for the Tamiya accent panel liner and decals Colonel so i don't destroy the King Tiger. She won't be on display, relegated to scrap:)

Watched the Belguim F1 the other week Alicatt and seeing how beautiful the region is it's weird to think of masses of tanks and men pushing through those forests 70 odd years ago.

From a rivet counter. Your crew member is outstanding. The paint wear on the recoil part of the barrel does not match your weathering for the rest of the hull.

Ajay I was at the F1 in Spa back in 2012 and I had a track day in November 2009, 2012 the weather was so hot it was almost splitting the tarmac and in 2009 it was so cold and wet it was miserable. The Ardennen is rolling hills and deep valleys, when looking at it you would hardly think it was tank country at all.

Where I live in Belgium it is only a few km to where Operation Market Garden was launched from Leopoldsburg and they have a Sherman tank as a war memorial outside the railway station, I think it is a Firefly but I'm not positive on that, however our town of Hechtel-Eksel has a Firefly as a war memorial and it is pretty beaten up with quite a few holes in it from where it has been hit by armour piercing rounds. Our little tankie has been moved from the main cross roads in the town to a side street then it has been moved again to a back street where it is not that visible and I'm wondering how long it will be before it disappears completely.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Cheers Aldo, even my daughter liked my figure this time. I should have dulled down that recoil paint wear for sure and faded it in a bit:)

Spa must be awesome Alicatt as must be where you live, so much history!

Sorry but i have to ask, what about the logo/part number molded into the top of the turret?

I noticed there doesn't seem to be a Coax MG on this one?

On the M4A3E8 it is in the port above and to the left of the gun (looking from muzzle to the mantlet). It looks shallow as it hasn't been shaded on the model, but the muzzle is not proud of the armour IRL.

Thanks. Maybe a small improvement there if there was a hint of a barrel... no biggie though.
