Having started an Ironman version of the campaign, I am paying a little more atention to what is going on in the story.

After getting the Argo off that nasty moon, Lady what's her face shows up. Among all the drivel she says she is paying off the merc's debts to the banks, and she'll settle with the mercs after the war is won.

Soooo... How come I am still making a loan payment every month?

Yeah, that didn't sit right with me either.
"WTF? You just bought the debt so now I have to pay the SAME AMOUNT but to you?"
Geez! Not even a break on the interest. LOL

I noticed that too, so it’s an old bug if it’s a bug. I took it to mean that the debt would be paid when the job is done, ie the campaign is done.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck.”

That interest payment stops when you get the Argo.

edit: It helps my memory to be doing an Ironman campaign now.

The most interesting thing this time, my second try at the campaign is how less scary the bad guys are. Maybe even I have improved in my tactics a little.
