Nvidia could do this via drivers, they did something like this for their quadro series, people were using the cheaper models for scientic research and they said no no,changed the eula and made stuff usefull only suported for drivers on the more expensive and dedicated hardware, they could do this got GTX line and leave mine hostage for their pg series mining cards.

I don't think the question is whether or not nVidia or AMD could do this. They can do this via drivers, they can force their retailers to certain terms, etc.... the question is WHY would they want to do so? Unless both nVidia and AMD do the clamp down, all they'll be doing is driving miners away from them and onto the competitor. If both of them do clamp down, why would they essentially slit their own wrists? Their GPUs are flying off the shelves faster than they can re-stock it.... now if retailers are selling it to the customer at inflated prices, do you think nVidia/AMD is selling their GPUs to retailers for non-inflated prices?

This has been popular for a while now. And I'm certain the nVidia and AMD are enjoying it. I've even wondered whether the importance/optimization of this field may enter into their design choices on the hardware and drivers.

Well, there are supposedly mining-optimized GPUs that don't seem to offer anything more than standard GPUs.... sometimes the mining GPUs are even less value-for-money.

acording to building partners, their price is set, they can't raise it, that is why, right now, buying a gaming pc is better then building one yourself.

Building partners, yes, but not retailers.

Correct. Retailers can mark it up or down as much as they want based on market forces. In this sense, it's really no different from any other product or commodity.

Maybe some used GPU will go on sale for cheap... unfortunately between daughter and wife $7500 have conga-lined danced out of my @$$ in the last three weeks for dental/medical expenses.

Since the video card is only a part of the package and most builders use crap PSUs, I would still build my own.

Vienna, 2nd rock left.
I've ordered my new system about two weeks ago... GTX 1080ti prices still not falling, despite the new cards being announced...

Why couldn't Nvidia just segregate the two? Offer a cheaper product for the miners without the capabilities of antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, all the video stuff, but as a result (at least out of the box) with MORE power for that application? Lower prices, more sold.

Then lower prices for actual VIDEO cards, more sold.

That's what I'd be doing if I were Nvidia...
