Title says it all.

Mine: a second, cheap PC with a monitor next to my simming machine's monitor. I can sim on my good machine and look up reference, watch tutorials, read online manuals etc while I'm in-game, no fuss no muss. I network between the two as well and it's great flexibility. Wish I'd done this 15 years ago.

For me it's a Belkin key pad.a M8 sent me.Makes programming all the commands in and making a map for it programs just like an x-52 I could never mast hitting tow or three keys and pay attention to the sim

I think the best simming aid I ever bought was the Falcon 3.0 “Art Of The Kill” edition. AOTK explained more to me than all the tutorials did, after watching and absorbing Pete Bonanni’s instructions I found myself at the elbow almost all the time and even managed to dodge missiles more often than not. Except those deadly SA7s, there was no avoiding those! Not until the 3.05 patch, anyway.

A very close second were my various Thrustmaster setups. I got out of simming long before TrackIR was a thing.

I think at the start for me was a joystick of all things. I didn't have one and had to borrow my cousin's back when I bought U.S. Navy Fighters Gold and having one obviously made all the difference. The next major aid I'd have to say the Track IR. I remember seeing videos of it being used in FS2004 and being blown away seeing players lean outside of the cockpit. Sorry I listed two but those are the two fundamental devices that made things significantly better.

I did the second cheap PC (laptop) too. I was able to access and reference information much faster this way. It was used heavily for Falcon and LOMAC.

I would have to find the box with the floppy, and it is slightly off subject.
Falcon 3.0 bundle with the Thrustmaster TMS was the first computer game I purchased. Played it non stop and kept upgrading my 386 to get better graphics.
Eventually, you could purchase a mod and a set of mod tools from the modder. smile I had to have it and it started me looking under the hood.
Best software I ever purchased for my hobby time.

For me I'd have to split it evenly with TrackIR, and my old Thrustmaster F-16 FLCS HOTAS. That thing really did change everything. I still own it somewhere but it's now replaced by my Cougar.

Hands down TrackIR. Nothing else comes close.

OK guys you got me looking at the next obvious step to a Track IR..Only question is how does it affect frame rates??? I'm just on the border line with CLOD, BOS and IL-2 BAT

Wouldn't a good set of HOTAS and Pedals be the best aid...I know I wouldn't be able to fly without it. I can make do without all others such as trackIR.

Track IR.

I see Spidey's point, and I'd rather have a Cougar and no track IR than the other way around. But I think we would view the HOTAS as essential, not an 'aid', but that's open for interpretation.

It doesn't affect framerates at all, or at least measurably. The bulk of the directional processing is done in the unit itself.

I'm left handed so no HOTAS and pedals for me. My Thrustmaster joystick and twist rudder/throttle combo though has served me well for several years now. smile

My best friend is left handed and he's always flown left handed, using a CH Pro stick. I always bug him about it, at one time he was working toward flying fighters IRL so he would have had to learn to fly right handed there, especially the F-16, so why not get a real HOTAS and fly sims that way. But he refuses to try.

Anyway, once I built a sim cockpit with HOTAS and Oculus Rift I had him try it out. He flew around just fine and afterwards I say "You realize you were flying right handed don't you?" No response, he still insists on left handed flying with a CH Pro / rudders / keyboard.

In my case it's simply the fact that my joystick works so well for me that I'm already more than happy with how I perform in flight sims. Sure, rudder pedals would probably be nice but I don't really have the floor space for it and I also don't want the extra expense. It would be a different story if all I played were flight sims but flight sims only account for a modest percentage of the types of games I play.

1. Saitek HOTAS and pedals. Affordable, robust, and easy to setup and use.

2. TrackIR. The best "immersion" tool ever made.

I put the HOTAS and pedals first, because without them a lot of flight sims are simply impossible to play, or play well. Before the days of the HOTAS, one had just a joystick and a cardboard overlay (if one were lucky) over the keyboard...and I have never found a sim where one could fly via the keyboard and not be frustrated.

If the TrackIR breaks, it's not the end of playing. But if that HOTAS goes down, that's it. Hit escape and exit.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

I think the Saitek X-45 was my first HOTAS I bought at CompUSA. It would be the first time that I had a peripheral that gave me direct and ergonomic rudder control with that beautiful rocker switch inset beneath the throttle and I loved it. Up till then I had to use awkward keyboard buttons for rudder. Its also the first thing I ever made two stands for out of pvc to get them in an ergonomic, cockpit-like arrangement. Unfortunately that X-45 has become almost unusable so now I have to use a joystick with a twist axis which I like for ease of use and minimizing clutter.

I trained myself to fly right-handed, it really didn’t take that long. It was mainly working on fine motor control. Having an arm rest really helped.

I think the biggest single improvement in one shot for me was my first widescreen monitor. It just made approaches so much easier compared to 4/3 aspect ratio.

My Track IR and X-45 , which Ive had for years now.

More recently, an APIGA racing base and a racing seat. I just bought the seat base and not the wheel stand, that way it takes up less space and I can use my desk top to support the TS-PC wheel and 34" ultrawide monitor.
The seat and base is the real key, its nice solid and stable, no rolling no twisting desk chair for me. But did not have to build a permanent sim rig, the seat just sits against the wall like a chair when not in use. If you like racing sims, ditching the desk chair is the best thing you can do.

So many TrackIR comments - I too had one, but I never really saw it as an "aid".

Added immersion, absolutely.

But when trying to "fly by the book" I always saw that thing as a distraction...

I first read this as 'the best sWimming aid..', and was thinking 'ermm, I don't need aids to swim?'

But best simming aid...
I don't have Track IR, so I guess the first would be moving up to a HOTAS from some cheap stick. Then the next would be rudder pedals - a huge level of control and immersion over a twisty-stick.

Yes indeed. I used Saitek combat pedals for years and had no idea what I was missing until I got a set of Crosswinds.

Yes indeed. I used Saitek combat pedals for years and had no idea what I was missing until I got a set of Crosswinds.

Yep! I used Saitek pedals for close to 2 years while I saved money read reviews and debated buying Crosswinds. I liked using rudder pedals but the Saiteks felt "Klunky" to me.
Don't get me wrong, they worked, but "Klunky. Once I took the plunge and received my Crosswinds, within the first 20 minutes I knew I had made my last rudder pedal purchase ever.
Best purchase right behind Track IR4 & 5 that I ever made for simming. yep

TrackIR for the win, it opened up the immersion in Falcon 4.0 and I still have my original TiR baseball cap that I got with my first TrackIR

I did the same, TrackIR and the F16 FLCS/TQS/RCS combination I also got the programmable MFDs around the same time, they are/were dos compatible / programable via rs232 and there was a hack to get them to work with windows.

Love the TrackIR 5 pro and the Cougar but it is getting on a bit and the pots in it are worn out

Oculus Rift. You guys that have never tried it... find a local friend and give it a go IL2/DCS/Elite Dangerous/Dirt Rally/Project Cars(2)/Assetto Corsa... you've gotta try it.

TrackIR too.

Tried the Oculus Rift with DCS at a mate's place.
Loved the immersion, unparalleled effects and unbelievably smooth. You are in for real.

My problem is that I also enjoy the outside sim / room situational awareness, for lack of a better word!
TrackIR gives me both, I don't feel "cut off" and I would know if a filthy fly drowns in my glass of milk.

Cheers,
Slug

HOTAS from my early simming days, Saitek X36 if I remember well.

TrackIR

KG13 stick for my WW2 simming.

All 3 were essential steps.

Next is VR, but when ? I'm waiting for high resolution, invisible pixel, and the GPU that can run it at high frame rate.

Yes similar also felt it needed more work..........the new HTC Vive Pro I was reading about last month does up the resolution and has reduced cabling so it is going in the right direction.

There are still some good things about TIR like the price and I also like the detachment from the screen. Also in my case my 2 main sims dont support VR so makes sense for me personally to hold off and use TIR on all.......but then again I didn't get TIR till Gen 3.

The reason I listed Track IR instead of Oculus Rift is because

1. Track IR takes no hit on performance and it doesn't require you to triple your computing power
2. Rift picture quality (resolution) is a downgrade from your monitor and it's *very* hard to maintain the required FPS
3. Takes a lot of money, effort and head scratching to get it working.

I won't argue the relative merits of the two because I only have and have only used the latter. But I will say that "triple your computing power" is an overstatement as is it being very hard to maintain FPS. As for number 3 that hasn't been my experience with OR at all.

I dont know why there is even a discussion about this?

If you are going to do Flight simulation, you need a joystick, thats a given, after that the best purchase I made for the hobby when i started was Rudder Pedals ... throttle control via a joystick or keyboard combination can be managed easily enough, twist joysticks for rudder too I suppose but, jeeze that's getting desperate.

Once you choose to enjoy flightsim, choose a half decent stick, you can do everything you need from that single unit if you are on a budget, if it has twist grip for rudder then you are off to a flying start, but its a bad habit to get into ... throttle control can usually be managed via even a keyboard quite well in the short term ... but you really should consider decent rudder pedals (with toe brakes preferably) after the mandatory Joystick purchase.

Rudder Pedals were the best simming aid I bought way back in the early days, everything else above that are nice luxury's, inc HOTAS, Track IR and VR, a good stick and rudder will give you good habits, a separate throttle is cheap too and can usually be managed from any stick but i really would avoid twist grip sticks for rudder like the plague.

My setup, nothing really fancy compared to some on here, but I'm always upgrading it.

I am more interested in the source for the 'head' the rift is sitting on. I can't find one with enough weight to hold the rift without falling over.

Heh, the lady in pic is Jo Guest, she is a former UK page 3 model I met at a Biker do, jokingly asked her if she would send me a signed picture, gave her my real address and a few weeks later it arrived with her topless, never expected that! She was a real nice down to earth Lady and quite the hottie smile

The Rift holder is a glass head I got off Ebay a few years ago as a headphone holder, works well for the Rift headset too, searh on Ebay for glass head and you should find something, glass has the weight to keep it steady.

I feel a stick is a requisite, not an aid. If that's OK with you that is. Sort of like my butt isn't an aid for sitting, it makes proper sitting possible.

Personally I don't know why you asked a question when in context you made a statement. I guess it goes to show we don't think alike. And that my friend is the reason for discussion.

Hope that clears up your befuddlement.
