Chart of the day: The worst episode of Star Trek ever

Quote
In 29 seasons of Star Trek, only one episode has an average IMDb review lower than five out of 10 — episode 22 of season two of The Next Generation, "Shades of Gray".

It was a clip show, the term given to an episode of a TV show that is made up of mostly recycled footage from previous episodes.

Fans typically hate clip shows, a feeling emphasised in this case because episode 22 was also a season finale.

The blame is said to fall somewhere between the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike and earlier episodes depleting the seasonal budget.

Using the raw data from that chart (available at link under chart) I averaged the rating of all episodes of each series:

TOS - 7.495
TNG - 7.384
DS9 - 7.515
VOY - 7.405
ENT - 7.637
STD - 7.767

Cool how they all fell within such a narrow margin around 7.5. I don't agree however with the result, IE STD having the highest average episode rating.

I think there is always a bit of inherent bias towards newer films and shows on these rating websites, since younger viewers are probably providing a disproportionate number of the ratings, and are going to rate higher the things they are more familiar with (everything else being even).

No other way to explain ENT getting a higher rating than DS9 . . .

You are absolutely right about that.

Speaking of Star Trek, the TNG season 2 finale was obviously seriously hamstrung by the writer's strike that year. Had there been no strike, that season 2 finale would have turned out radically different.

I am dismayed by ratings like this.

Let's look at the best/worst episode of Star Trek (Original Series), where Kirk takes on the Gorn.

The whole premise is dumb, the acting is pure Shatner cheese, the rubber Gorn suit is hilarious, and the "fight" is ridiculous. For those with some basic science knowledge it's a laugh riot!

It is probably one of the worst written and performed episodes of the whole series. Nemoy looks and sounds like he's ready to stop, look into the camera, and say "Really? Really? You actually want me to say this s--t?" when he recites this garbage into his console visor thing on the bridge. He can't bear to look at the camera as he does it.

However, when pulled all together it's friggin' gold, and one of my favorites. It crosses that magical barrier where it's so bad it's good....and indeed, it's so bad it's great.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

Except for the silly fight scene where the Gorn should have just bit Kirk's leg off with those teeth "The Arena" episode was one I found pretty enjoyable.
Plus the location set is one I keep telling myself I am going to visit some day... Vasquez Rocks: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasquez_Rocks

Something else just came to mind, IIRC this is the episode that gave Nimoy tinitus in his right ear and Shatner in his left.
