Remember it well. If only we were back there

I was luckily sitting in my living room, except for the launch when we walked the whole 1/4 mile to the beach to watch, in Indialantic, FL just ecstatic. I am vaguely remembering my betrothed and setting our schedules to coincide with the live broadcasts from the moon schedule.

I was seven years old, and my clearest memory of that night was going out on our front porch and standing there beside my father looking up at the moon while two Americans walked on it's surface. Even at my young age I knew I was bearing witness to history. I still get chills thinking about it.

I actually received a short letter a couple of weeks ago from "Copy you on the ground Eagle" Apollo 11 landing CapCom (and Apollo 16 LM pilot) Charlie Duke. Framed and on my desk now.

Something I learned listening/watching the above: Charlie Duke tells a story of how Gene Kranz, about a minute before landing, tells Duke to stop talking to Armstrong/Aldrin except for critical data (Duke says he said "Shut up and let them land"). The audio record instead shows:

102:43:25 GET - CAPCOM (Charlie Duke) I think we better be quiet, FLIGHT.

102:43:26 GET - FLIGHT (Gene Kranz) Rog. Okay the only call outs from now on will be fuel.


Funny how memories can differ from reality, or maybe Kranz did tell Duke to shut up earlier and "off mike".
