So, this was weird.

I was testing out some demo software (legally, no virus crap) when suddenly my keyboard starts repeating keys.

I was anyway done, figure the software got stuck and maybe took the input driver with it, boot down the PC.

Boot up a little later to finish something else, and the key is still stuck.

Unplug the keyboard, replug it... all good until I hit another key a few times. Then that key got stuck.

So the pattern was: unplugging the keyboard fixed the problem. Then I hit a key a few a times (any, didn't matter) and it would become stuck. Which means it certainly wasn't a mechanical issue on a specific key as I could make any letter key stick. F8 stopped the repeating.

Tried booting to safe mode, find that the keyboard isn't responding in BIOS either.

Changed USB Port - now it works again. Could replicate the issue on the previous USB port.

I was worried that it might be malware/keylogger or such, so I ran Malwarebytes in safe mode, nothing found.

How can a specific USB Port make a key repeat?

No clue how that would work out.

Actually as I type this I move the keyboard back to the original USB port, and now it works a little longer before going again into repeat mode.

???

Either I got some BIOS-level virus infection (unlikely since it came active without a reboot?) or I have an USB Port go bad?

My GUESS, USB Port.

Shouldn't be bad firmware as you said AOK on other port.....hmmm, are they both USB 2.0 or 3.0, I mean the same type of port?

If a virus why.... "I think I will target people that have a USB keyboard and just drive them nuts!"

If he's that good he'd be looting your bank account I think.

Anyway, good luck,

and have a pleasant tomorrow. smile

LOL...

Tested to move back the keyboard to the original USB Port. And it's somewhat working again now. Just as I type this I had a short moment of runaway keys, and then it stopped.... Now it's only partially eating key presses (ignoring them).

Heat? No clue what's causing this behaviour. Maybe my machine knows it's going for retirement. But at least it's so eratical, it doesn't appear to be a corrupted/malicious driver or such.

USB overload?

USB 2 device in a USB3 port?

I've had the same problems with a GSkill keyboard and USB3 port

No ideas from me, but this topic did send my mind back to 1995, when I tried the demo to Dust: A Tale of the Wired West.

The demo installation corrupted my Win3.1 OS to the point it was unbootable. I had to format and reinstall DOS and Win3.1 to get running again. That was really the point that broke me of my fast and free ways of installing every PC game demo disc I got with a magazine.

Do other devices malfunction in that port? Wouldn’t plug in a flash drive with anything important on it. Do you have another keyboard you can test in it?
Unplug all other usb devices and try it. I’m sure you rebooted. Maybe find the keyboard, plugged into that port, disable in device mgr then reenable.
Maybe some kind of IRQ conflict?

The keyboard could be going out from its polling or debouncing not working properly (shorts in the circuit board, grounding out somehow), or the USB port could be giving it grief via either static electricity build-up, or improper voltage.

Haha I win! wink

I have the original release of the Corsair K70 keyboard from way back when. It's still going strong!

Hurray, I can type again. Need to get used to the key spacing and the noise. Supposedly the Cherry MX Brown are silent... ? Well they aren't wink

Big bonus that it doesn't require any software to set up and use, I can dim the red key lighting with a hardware button. Very different from the Razer I have at work which needed an online account to manage the lighting.

Do install the software, as I think it gives you some programmability with extra keeps and debounce and all of the key repeater things.
