Hello everyone! First time poster long time lurker here.

I mostly play Elite Dangerous (does it count as a flight sim..?), and until today I've been using my Glorious Flightstation + HTC Vive to play.
I decided to step up my game, and inspired by this video from MonsterTech, I will be building a modular cockpit using extruded aluminum and a car chair.

Starting from the chair, I was thinking of going around nearby junkyards and look for one in good conditions, potentially replacing the cover/padding.

Questions:
- would you recommend such approach?
- are there any criteria that I should use in choosing the chair?

Looking forward to your suggestions.

I would say using a used automotive seat is a good approach depending on how much work you're prepared to do on it and what you're trying to accomplish. But I'm a bit biased because this is the approach I've used. This is my seat...

The only tips I can think of are, make sure the seat is comfortable. As you know, you can be parked in this seat for quite some time while you're simming. For me, even though I want a sense of immersion, comfort is more important than an accurate replica of a real seat. The other tip would be to take note of the symmetry (or lack there of) of the seat. I believe my seat was from the front of a mini-van and had a built in armrest on one side only. The other armrest would have been built into the vehicle's door. Once I removed the single armrest and re-upholstered the seat, there was no problem with symmetry. But depending on your plans, you might have different results.

Good luck with your project.
