As no one else seems to be posting anything on Quonset Point 2018 in this rather sedate forum, I'll start a thread. My first airshow in several years and my first chance to see an F-35 IRL. Most of my attention was devoted to keeping track of a highly excited eight year old boy amidst the large crowd. Still, I snapped a number of shots with my Canon 7D with an 18-135 mm kit lens. Boy, do I really want a new, better lens! Just a little bit closer is all I need... Lighting conditions were generally not good and many of these shots are already heavily cropped so for better or worse: My first view of an F-35 in the wild came beneath the wings of Blue Angel F-18's: P-51D Mustang, F-16 Falcon, and two F-35's on the flight line: F4U and P-51 flyby: Keeping the canopy cracked open a bit: The tail hook on that TBM barely looks up to the job: A classic Navy blue lineup: Gracefully stowing her wings: More navy heritage: The Air Force Heritage flight: Heavily cropped: Fist pump after flying formation with the F-16 and F-35: F-35 Lightning II up close: Quite the lineup of warbirds! More than 70 years later she still carries impressive speed on a low flyby: Hand on stick. The T-33 Shooting Star: An eight year old watches his first high speed low altitude flyby of a modern fighter jet:

Great shots! I remember being that kiddo years ago too It looks like the lighting wasn't too bad, that flat gray overcast makes for pretty good photos in my experience. I'd recommend a zoom topping out around 300mm as a good general purpose lens for this kind of thing. I use a 55-300mm, and at 55mm I treat it as basically a prime and "zoom with my feet." Being able to crank down to 300mm however opens up all kinds of neat opportunities to shoot things even static on the ground. Also don't fret to much about getting fast glass for this, air shows tend to happen when there's a lot of light. Sure that 75mm-300mm f/2.8 is awesome but really you'll be shooting at f/9+ the vast majority of the time at an air show (particularly of birds in flight), and that extra stop (from f/4 down to f/2.8) can cost upwards of a grand for Canon lenses. For aerial stuff, you can crop heavily like you stated you are doing (which on a good body still produces perfectly fine shots for computer viewing), or step up to a 500mm if you think you'll be printing them at wall hanging size. -Jenrick

Hey thanks for the advice! I'm not particularly knowledgeable but would love to advance further and get better shots. I don't have a great idea of what the next step would be lense-wise so that info is helpful. I see the work some on this site have posted (like Top Gun and Arthonon) and really admire the exposure and detail they can produce.

Great shots that bring back memories of watching airshows there. My experience for being that kiddo was This AccidentThey were putting on a great show, but I still have the image of that fireball / mushroom cloud burned into my memory.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events. More dumb stuff at http://www.darts-page.comFrom Laser: "The forum is the place where combat (real time) flight simulator fans come to play turn based strategy combat."

Yeah, that Corsair pilot is from Connecticut. There was a Corsairs Over Connecticut gathering a few years ago I wasn't able to attend. This was my first time seeing one in flight- lovely bird.

Beautiful shots Dave! Love the detail you are able to get. I was actually there on Saturday and found the lighting conditions challenging. Some of the ground crew for the F-35 were handing out post cards and patches which my son enjoyed. I told them the impression I had from what I've read was that F-35 wasn't the most nimble fighter in the world, but it's stealth and electronics suite seems to put it at an advantage against most opponents. They smiled and said, "The F-16's hate going up against us. We knock them down before they even know we're there." I guess that's assuming our air to air missiles will hit their targets when fired IRL.

Would like to. I've never seen a Spit or P-38 in flight, but my 8 year old co-pilot is not up for it so I probably won't make it. If you go I'll look forward to seeing some shots of them on here.
