How do you turn it off?

I guess it came with the last patch.

You can't even get rid of it on "easy".

Hi Nowi,

I believe you are talking about "Head Shake"

With WOFF not running, edit the file D3D8.ini file at "C:\OBDSoftware\WOFF\WOFFScenery\Shaders\d3d8.ini" .

Set HeadShake=0

You can also use a JSGME mod to edit the d3d8.ini with custom settings to make it easy to turn off/off.

Thanks will try this because I suspect this Headshake make the also the trees look funny. Leafs are acting like litle LEDs that are blinking.

Thanks.

It may be realistic, but for me it was annoying and kind of nauseating.

I've never flown a WWI fighter. But I have spent some time on a go-cart track. You sure get shaken around on the track, muscling through the curves with G-forces that don't shake the head, but rather throw it in the direction of the g-forces.The sensation I have on the track is nothing like the simulation of head shaking in the WOFF cockpit. It's more like your head is still and the machine is shaking.

To each his own. Maybe when I'm scoring 200 kills with my pilots, I'll turn it back on. But for now....

Yep, same boat here. I have it turned off.

Remember, if you reinstall or another WOFF patch comes out, you will need to redo the edit.
Thus the suggestion to look into that mod (which I still have to do myself.)

I turned it off and noticed fewer micro stutters when using the new blue triangle killer mod. Not sure if its related in any way. Havent fliwn enough missions to be positive but thats the impression i got.

Hellshade is this while flying in outside view, because it does also shake at outside view and then it looks you are having stutters, while it is that headshake behavour.

I’m delighted to find this simple but very effective mod. At last I can actually hit stuff!

The previous wobbly head effect was making it all but impossible for me to line up the sights on anything. Though not a pilot, I have been up in open cockpit biplanes a few times, as well as in some jet trainers, and in my recollection I was always able to hold my head quite steady even if the pilot was throwing the plane about a bit. As Nowi says, you quickly learn to “muscle through the curves”.

Also, recall that the original Fokker EI had a rigid “headrest” device to hold the pilot’s head steady to help him line up shots with the machine gun, see attached pic. This device was very quickly discarded as unnecessary, implying that headshake wasn’t an issue after all.

So I certainly vote for Headshake=0.

Mike

Headshake effect was added quite late into WOFF UE development and thus there's no UI to configure it, that's why you have to edit d3d8.ini.
I believe it can be done much better, but I didn't have time.

Besides disabling it completely there are three options in d3d8.ini allowing to adjust the effect, if anyone is interested:

Increase these values to make the pilot's neck stronger so that the view recenters faster:
OffsetSpring=12
RotationSpring=24

And reduce this to reduce shake from small changes in speed:
OffsetResponse=6

However as Hellshade noticed, there's a chance that headshake can add a bit of stutter, especially at high "spring" settings. It is not FPS stutter, but rather head movement which is not smooth enough. It seems like an error somewhere in my formulas, but I couldn't figure out the exact reason.

A more,

I much appreciate all your efforts in WOFF.

THANKS for the info on tweaking head shake.

I didn't care for the 'headshake' either. I have been in full scale open cockpit airplanes and you do get tossed around some especially if there is a blue sky full of cumulus clouds. On gray overcast days the plane ride is as smooth as silk. I got used to the headshake because I didn't know how to turn it off.

I usually turn the headshake off in every flight sim.

Hiya Hellshade. I'll second what you're seeing as well. I turned it off this evening - I was also growing a bit tired of the movement - especially the yaw effect where my head is almost half out of the cockpit because of the direction of the aircraft and I also noticed fewer pauses and less stutters. Wondering if the movement wasn't putting extra load on the card - which would make sense, by yawing or panning it's going to be loading that little bit of detail in and out of draw range of the screen and during a dogfight it would play havoc with the smoothness - FPS would stay around or at 60 but I'd still get a lot of pauses. Hope this helps!
