Very nice Pol. Will the Heinkel be flyable?

Very nice pictures, I am looking forward to purchasing and flying WOTR. yep Will there be a recording feature in WOTR and possibly a new external viewing camera mode? A more traditional, F2 = external, F3 = Flyby... Etc???

Yes,being able to do more cinematically would be a very big feature. Some new fixed views and a free camera would open up a lot of creative possibilities.

Let's pretend I got the BWOC badge to embed here.

Planes look great, can't wait to pick this up!

Any chance you could let us know what phase of the war you're starting out with? From the pics so far it looks to be a Battle of France/Battle of Britain campaign.

Those are some tasty screenshots. Pol, any chance of posting a belly-landing damage shot with the bent props? Will the sirens work on Ju-87?

Gentlemen,

I am not able to share my impression in words of WOTR (Beta) however Pol was kind enough to allow me to share a few pics with you. I hope you enjoy them. I don't believe I am breaking the NDA in any way by simply commenting that the sounds are amazing (no specifics) and Matt is right to be proud of his scoring, once again.

ALL SCREENSHOTS ARE FROM BETA AND ARE A WORK IN PROGRESS (WIP). CHANGES CAN AND MOSTLY LIKELY WILL BE MADE TO VARIOUS ASPECTS BEFORE THE FINAL PRODUCT SHIPS.

Bye kids. Have fun raiding the channel! wink

I have to say, raiding channel ships could become a new addiction for me. Hope you don't mind a few more pics. Not really giving anything away I don't think by saying that the immersion I was hoping for is certainly all there.

ALL SCREENSHOTS ARE FROM BETA AND ARE A WORK IN PROGRESS (WIP). CHANGES CAN AND MOSTLY LIKELY WILL BE MADE TO VARIOUS ASPECTS BEFORE THE FINAL PRODUCT SHIPS.

quoting WOTR site

'The intention is that it will eventually encompass the whole of WW2 and will be centered in Europe. From the Battle of France, Battle of Britain to the massive day and night raids over Germany and German held territories'

In this Phase, yes Battle of Britain. If it does well there will be more phases for the war, if not probably not wink

Key word on the quote from the website is "eventually"

This is what CFS3 needs to keep going strong. Hard to believe it's such a old sim. Still play one of my 9 installs every day along with IL-2 1946 and the many installs i have for it. Wonder how it will compare to the new IL-2 Great Battles series because it looks pretty awesome too though i don't have them yet but holding out for WOTR. If it is anything like WOFF-UE it ought to be pretty awesome. Regards,Scott

Just a couple of questions.
Will the aircraft be bump mapped? Hard to tell from the pictures.
The aircraft look awfully clean; need more scuffs, guns residue around gun ports; generally a bit more worn.
Is this still going to be using CFS3/WOFF terrain or new improved terrain? Thinking along CLoD lines?

Other than that, I will love the searchlights and other effects I see there.

It's 1940, the craft are fresh out of the factory and some have first flight on them, they should be clean ! THey don't have 50 years on them.

But they do have some wear on them and marks from guns exhausts, scratches and so on - but not the excessive wear as seem in some sims and many of these aircraft were new, or newly replaced so some would be quite fresh as JimBob says. No single wear and tear skin will cope with the entire war supply..

Without giving away anything specific, let me just say that this isn't WOFF UE with a WWII "coat of paint" on it.

Flying without labels brings with it the anxiety of knowing that if you miss seeing one bandit - you could be dead from his guns in an instant if he gets the right hits with his cannons on you. Most of the wear and tear is from the stress and fear that grinds down the pilot. wink

You mean from flying 100 mph in WW1 over the lines, to flying at 300mph in WW2 defending ships or airfields etc, or attacking Britain ? I hope so wink.

It's a new campaign totally geared for the WW2 environment and the BoB period. Very different attacks and tactics from WW1 of course.
AI has lots of new WW2 knowledge, for example like flying the JU87 and performing proper dive bombing whilst trying to hit a moving ship
AI can react differently in certain conditions to WOFF.
DM changes, you can belly land for example now.

However it is still all about single player immersion up in the sky defending your country or attacking with great AI.

Sounds like WOTR will be another superb simulation from OBD.
Awaiting release with bated breath.

You can try to belly land now...but you are taking your life into your hands because it's no easy feat to accomplish. It requires real skill, as does all of the sim.

Pol, if only someone had taken more pics of say..channel raiding ships...we could share them. biggrin

Is the belly landing difficult because of the fences?
Seriously, will there be a need to belly land? What I mean, is the landing gear damage modelled, so that if it’s hit it will not extend?

OBD is modeling WWII with great accuracy. Belly landings are definately not in there as an e-sport. biggrin

I can already imagine Rick_Rawlings organizing a Belly Landing Challenge once WOTR is available.

Well, there are times when a belly landing is pretty much your only option...
If your gear is damaged or won't lock down, (it will be interesting to know if pumping the gear down by hand is modelled)...
Or your chosen piece of ground to make an emergency landing is unsuitable for a wheels down landing etc... I've seen a few wheels up landings in real life... glad to say no one was injured smile

When you have to go for it you can, but it's tricky to do safely on some of the rough terrain. Yes I had to pump the gear down manually at one point in the Hurricane.

Interesting Pol, without going to the outside view, how can you tell the gear isn’t down? Does the “landing gear not in locked position” indicator work on the cockpit panel?

Not so Silent Hunter. Hellshade, are there any Uboots to be sunk in WOTR?

CFS3 has always had an oil slick special effect.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

(The images above show the lighter, more transparent/iridescent oil textures provided with the all-in-one effects.xml that Daiwiletti and I put together recently)

Perhaps WOTR will have some additional refinements like oil that trails along in the wake of a wounded ship.

To me it looks like the original texture is still being used in WOTR, as it doesn't blend in very well and creates a discrete black/green blotch on the surface.

[Linked Image]

I love the reflections in the new cockpit by the way...

Refinements will come in time I'm sure. So much to do and so few devs to do it.
It's amazing what has come along so far.

If WOTR gets good support from sales we can add almost anything, it's Phase1..... (deja vu)

Pol, looks like a perfectly executed 1-point belly landing. Thanks for the pics. What does “Leader Effort 1.00000” in the TAC message mean? Is the flight leader being graded on his performance?

Ok Pol, I won’t worry about the readouts. The “office” looks great. I assume all dials will be functional (as long as they’re not shot to pieces)?
Does OBD plan a Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe plane set for WOTR UE?

I can’t imagine the work needed just to get out a “regular and needed” plane set.

Here's how nutty I am. I haven't had jack-all time to fly in forever. In addition to a long commute, my company needs 50 hr/week to meet our current backlog at least through September; and I'm still working through permotting and so on to remedy the landslide I had earlier this year in addition to the usual summer work on our 6 acres and watching the grandkids.

And I'll be a Day 1 purchaser if I see it coming.

That, my friends, is Barmy!

A look at the Spit cockpit would be nice wink I'm fairly knowledge on the Spitfire (moreso the technical and superficial details and changes rather than construction and the like) and I'd be happy to provide any critiques if they'd be helpful smile !

Love the new flak effects - very impressive! Definitely not your dad's WWI smoky puffs...
Pictures don't quite do it justice though, it's in motion that you can really see the difference.

Man, I need to know what happened next! Did you survive the landing? Or should you have obeyed the order to BAIL OUT!

*edit : I hope there were no fences around! duck

Haha, yes, although it was a pretty hard landing that ended in one of those fences frown

Was out of action for 6 days and came back with a new bird smile

Here are my first screenshots, since the game is based on CFS3 I ported over my sounds and gunsights and I'm quite happy and loving the experience (except I can't get my pedals to work, but I'll sort it somehow).

Please feel free to use any screenshots I post to help promote this sim. The more people hear about WOTR, the better smile

And thank you Matt - which BTW the new soundtrack is amazing, I've had it the compositions stuck in my head all weekend. And here I thought it would be impossible to top WOFF...!

thanks, so did I, then again we thought Bhah would be difficult to follow too. There's nothing quite like a world war to get the creative juices a-flowing.

Wouldn't be a OBD sim without the Dawn shots would it

I'll never forget the people I met
Braving those angry skies
I remember well as the shadows fell
The light of hope in their eyes

And well you should have Sir! No proper English Gent would parade his exploits in front of the whole squadron! But then what do I know, I would have tried it myself if I thought I would not kill myself.

Great pics Nickerbocker. A notch up gloss and environment reflection setting looks good I use it too at the moment.

Unfortunately... my second patrol was fatal frown
Engaged two Heinkels and damaged both, but my engine was hit and rapidly stopped. I was aiming for a dead stick wheels up landing at Manston.
Came in lovely, slid along on the old girls belly, no problem, she was straight as you like... then the dreaded OBD fence arrived... Hurri instantly turned into scrap metal and blew up!... lol!

I'm pretty sure in reality, a Merlin III engine would have smashed through the fence like it wasn't there, but, Hey Ho... such is life biggrin

unfortunately my joystick arm is out of commission for a few weeks (fell over, tore some things, old man). But I booted her up and got in the cockpit to have a look around. punched the throttle to full, and careered into the stands where a second squad was parked up...it was not pretty. See you in the air chaps.

On patrol south of Bournemouth, the usual convoy sweep... got into a scrap with a Heinkel and got jumped by a 109 who put a couple of holes in my starboard fuselage.
Didn't find out until I landed (had to divert to Christchurch as it shook me up a little)... I didn't even see the bloody 109 until he screamed past me.
Luckily he wasn't a good shot biggrin

I did but I am not sure if it’s the game or my maxed out Nvidia Control Panel settings.
Still working to find the “sweet spot.”

I have to say though, the kites are too 'clean'... we need worn and well used machines out there!!!

Also, my grandfather told me a story of how his unit was crossing the road in France a few days after D Day when a 109 came screaming low over a hill barreling right towards him. He thought he was going to be strafed for sure and kind of clenched his teeth, but the plane just wooshed by. A moment later, a Spitfire raced by in hot pursuit. About a half minute after that, there was a loud explosion and some smoke and then presently, the Spitfire did a climbing turn back into sight and vanished the way it had come...

Cool pictures Blademeister, makes me wish I had more time to play WoTR myself but with work and studying for the real thing I'm usually too tired in the evenings and too busy weekends to dust off the old joystick. Also, I can't wait to see the inside of a Spitfire in some of these screenshots OBD.

hint hint wink

Very nice, Blade!
It's 5:30 AM here and looking at the 3rd picture my eyes read it wrong for a moment and I had a vision of a hurricane with a big hollow nose scoop like a sabre!

Thanks Gents, glad you like them. I did a bit more flying today getting ready to start a Campaign this weekend and here are a few more pics. WOTR really looks and performs well even on my old rig. yep

Yup, it's a secret. If I told you, I would have to kill you and I am trying to kick the habit my good Sir. Here are a few more pics as a good will consolation. winkngrin Thanks for playing though.

S!Blade<>< hahaha hahaha neaner hahaha hahaha

P.S. On a serious note. My Hat is off to OBD for the way clouds are rendered(?) in WOTR. It is the only time I can remember in a flight sim seeing a plane through the clouds. If I am remembering correctly, correct me if I am wrong, usually you are either blocked by the clouds or outside the clouds. The fourth picture here is what I am referring to as being seen in the clouds. Quite nice I think. yep thumbsup

Thank you Ace_Pilto. WOTR is pretty easy on the eyes and I jut enjoy taking pics. The down side is I hardly ever just seem to fly a mission without stopping and shooting pics. I think I am going to have to designate picture taking days and actual Campaign days so I can truly enjoy what WOTR has to offer without interruption. hahaha

Adger, it is always a pleasure to see your pictures and hear of your experiences in the different sims we fly. Glad you like the pics, it is just one of the side pleasures that come along with this wonderful Sim.

More Cowbell! I mean more PICTURES Sir!!!! yep

To POL, WM, Mat, MF and others I don't know in OBD . What a wonderful job you have done in producing WOTR. I honestly have to say after just a few missions that OBD has taken WOTR one notch above WOFF UE, and I Love WOFF UE also, but this just visually looks Fresh and feels really good in the FM department and the music. I am looking forward to entering a Campaign this weekend and experiencing what you all have prepared for me in the BOB, especially the AI. I just want to say that the pics I have posted are straight from the game, no Photoshop what so ever. What fabulous visuals WOTR presents us with. Thanks Again Guys. S!
