Again. It's been a while since I last read it, but it has been long enough that it feels like I am rediscovering parts of the story. I wish I had some brilliant analytical commentary to accompany this post in order to explain why I love this story so much, but I suspect that part of the reason has to do with the fact that I grew up during the era when it took place. In any case, this novel and the movie it inspired are my favorites of all time. smile

I had a collection of Clancy novels back home and Red October was one of my favorites. Both the book and the movie smile In fact, I watched the movie when I was younger and it's what got me interested in playing Silent Hunter.

Do not forget "Red Storm Rising". I read it whenever I need a Clancy fix. He was a regular customer in the electronics store I worked in always had time for a conversation about his work.

I’ve yet to read HFRO but it’s definitely on my reading list.

Were there any changes made in the movie from the novel? I’m curious to know.

There are, yes, as I can remember thinking that, but not very much IIRC. Either way, both are quite good!

Been years since I read it, but I enjoyed it. Seems like he movie was fairly faithful, as movies go, but cut out a lot of the excess filler and unnecessary characters. Not like the near total rewrite that C&PD was. I wish they’d stuck with Baldwin for the movies, I thought he was better than Ford.

It was Baldwin's choice to not continue as Ryan.

Got this from IMDB concerning "Patriot Games":

Alec Baldwin bowed out of this film when production was pushed back from 1991 to 1992. He had already committed to doing a revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire" on Broadway, and told then Paramount President Brandon Tartikof to either work around him, or find someone else to play Ryan. Ford was then approached to play Ryan in this movie after having turned down the role in The Hunt for Red October (1990), because he felt the script was more focused on Captain Ramius, than on Jack Ryan.

Wow, I didn't know that Ford was approached to play Ryan in Red October. Personally, I like them both as Jack Ryan.

And although I like Ben Affleck, I didn't like him in "Sum of All Fears." I am also somewhat skeptical about John Krasinski in this new Jack Ryan iteration coming out on Amazon, but I will try to be open-minded.

I'd like to attempt the book some day. Its one of my favorite movies in my list of all time favorite motion pictures. Its one of those kinds of movies that even though I've probably seen it a dozen times, EVERY single time its on tv I can just stop and watch it over and over again. I find that I find or understand new things each time. So beautifully written and intricately woven together and everything is just right with the actors, look, feel, model and effects, music, pacing and everything. I watched a making of video on Youtube and I did not realize that the sub shots were NOT filmed underwater in a tank. I had always imagined that they were shot underwater. I also did not realize just how huge the models were. Instead, they filmed it in a studio set filled with smoke and skillful use of lighting with only a little bit of post effects later to add plankton or bubbles to add that extra bit of depth. I still think its some of the best practical effects and modeling seen in a movie and I would not change them for anything in the world and the movie is almost thirty years old. Even the bit of CG they did use which was certainly limited at the time had a cool look to them such as the countermeasures.

When it comes to submarine films, the holy trinity for me is HFRO, Das Boot and The Enemy Below.

Is the enemy below the Richard Widmark one?

Censored

Look for me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Tic Toc...or anywhere you may frequent, besides SimHq, on the Global Scam Net. Aka, the internet.
I am not there, never have been or ever will be, but the fruitless search may be more gratifying then the "content" you might otherwise be exposed to.

No. Robert Mitchum and Curd Jurgens.

Feather merchant!
Great flick, HFRO before it existed. I had to look that term up, first time I’d heard that one.
Worth owning.
