I don’t understand this plane, but I like it. Deserving of preservation.

I always thought it was made for long range missions, particularly deep into the Soviet Union.

If I recall correctly it was originally intended to escort B-29's into Japan from Tinian, before Iwo Jima was captured bringing Japan into range of the P-51D.

I can understand the goal, but I can't understand the entire concept of twin fuselage. It just seems so "breakable". Yet Virgin Galactic just used it....

I’d say it was so it could be made on the same production lines as the P51, with only minor changes needed - the center wing & tail sections, wiring & hydraulics, etc.

You would think, but as it turns out (and I only learned this while following this restoration) the F-82 has very few common parts with the P-51!

So the fuselages, engines, and outer wings aren’t the same?

I don't recall the details, just from reading the blog during restoration there was mention of how many differences there were. You mentioned engines, the right engine is unique as it turns left. As does the prop of course. Many differences in fuselage, canopies etc.

Not a favorite of mine. Just too strange looking. But it's still cool to see them getting one flying. If the Atom bombs hadn't been used, P-82's would have been escorting B-29's to Japan and flying close support missions for the invasion. They saw plenty of combat in Korea, though. I think an F-82 got the first air to air kill over there.

I was not aware of that. Thanks Pooch. I found a cool article on the bird.
