A new miniseries from the Smithsonian channel is starting on June 24th, and looks pretty interesting:

"The Pacific War was unlike any military conflict before it in terms of its scale, scope, and savagery."

I guess the author of that article knows nothing about the Eastern Front.

The PTO was larger than the Russian front and it's arguable its scope was wider (IE variety of warfare, no submarine or carrier warfare on the Russian front) and it was as savage if not more so and it happened at the same time as the Russian front and the statement you quote does state "before".

Other than that you are 100% correct biggrin

Fair enough F4U. No doubt that the PTO had the massive naval component and also huge geographical area that was even larger than the Eastern Front. By that same token, the Eastern Fromt had the massive manpower and armor component and IMHO the savagery there was much worse than the Pacific. The Japanese committed war crimes no doubt but it doesn’t really compare with what the Einsatzkommandos did in the USSR.

I would put the Kempeitai, Unit 731 and most of the guards working the POW's along the Burma–Siam Railway up beside the Einsatzkommandos when it comes to brutality.
