Despite my best efforts (with not unlimited time) I have never flown against a Fokker DVII.
Well, my 1918 56 Squadron career is getting close to the time of the DVII’s combat debut.

Got plenty of bedtime reading though and have read, right from SE5 pilots themselves, about their advice in dealing with the DVII. The actual pilots of the time period describe their tactics as what would be latter called a kind of a “Boom & Zoom.”

No turning with the DVII, no climbing, just speed on up to the DVII, get a shot off, and zip past till clear. Once clear use your speed, climb a bit, and turn and dive for another straight run. If things get too hot dive way for home.
Based on what I know of WOFF plane performances (and I know the SE5 well) this sounds like it would be good advice in-game too?

Never fought the Fokker DVII, But i have used the same tactics in SE's and Spads. I found they work most of the time. Head on does get harry and U can still miss. I also found that at times the AI will give up a perfect bounce on their 6 o clock. Best of luck.

I think I'd rather be in the SE... It is reasonable in performance so that you can 'spar' with the D-VII for a bit then when the D-VII's maneuverability 'edge' starts to become evident the SE can RUN!

Hi Duke:

The maneuvers used by the F-8 pilot described in this video are relevant to your situation (Even though it is F-8 Corsairs vs MiG-17's the same basic principles apply)

https://youtu.be/runS2ytx18w?t=36m36s

Basically every time you merge with an opponent like the Fokker DVII you want to make sure that your energy state (speed) is higher than his. in this way you can use that extra energy to

a) position yourself for a pass

b) extend away and reposition

Don't try and match his turn at slow speeds and keep your speed higher enough than his to disengage if things start going pear shaped. Done well you can repeatedly attack an enemy like the DVII at little or no risk to yourself.

At first you may spend a lot of time running away trying this but, just remember; like any dance, it's all about that rhythm!

Well I have read accounts from SE5 pilots in the loooong past. But yes, the long power dive with "one" pass and then home for tea.
Many a Hun pilot also commented on this, and even used this tactic themselves too.
In his book "Open Cockpit" the author mentions Alb pilots that would wizz by and never look back,
running directly for home after the pass.
Basically, if the first run didn't work then maybe tomorrow.

By the time the DVII was arriving, most allied patrols were quite big, the days of the knightly joust were long over. It had become a very bloody and "Quick" afair.
The fights were really over before they started. If one squad had a good advantage over the other, the boys would pile in and run to look back and
possibly notice one or two "stinkers" going down.
