So there's a movie/television show thread, why not an album one? I listen to albums more often than I watch film. Yep. An old, lost art. The album. Who listens to them still? I find lonesome songs weak and feeble, alone and disconnected without context. And some of the best albums over the last forty years are amazing.
So, SimHQ, what's the last album you listened to? Since I listen to them almost daily, the one I'm listening to tonight is:
I think ELO never received as much recognition as they should have, and are easily overshadowed by larger, bigger name bands--myself, I've been guilty of listening to plenty others. But tonight, ELO has my ears, and this one was one of their finest.
Mike Oldfield - Hergest Ridge. Tubular Bells may be his most famous piece but for me Hergest Ridge (and Ommadawn) easily surpass it. I play it around once a week,it's so calming.
Apart from Amarok, in my opinion he's produced nothing worthwhile since the mid-80's.

Mmmm, I liked Music Of The Spheres and The Tempest from that album is amazing.

Do greatest hits collections count? If so, the most recent one I listened to was Boston's Greatest Hits.
If it doesn't count then the most recent full album I listened to was "Tommy" by The Who.

When I went to the recycle park to drop off the garden cuttings they had the Boondock Saints music blasting out the public address system, so when I got back to my car I just had to listen to the rest of the 2 albums, good mix of Irish, rock and religious music

I'm not exaggerating here, I've actually had a couple of 20-something year olds who had no idea what "album" meant as far as music goes.

It's just my personal preference. I have quite a bit of his later stuff,it just doesn't get played any more. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it,there just isn't any replay value in it for me.
I mostly listen to singles on MP3 playlists, burned from my CD's lossless archives, but I still think in albums. Occasionally I'll have an artist marathon which almost always includes back-to-back full albums.
I grew up listening to 8-tracks (making deals at yard sales in the early 80's) and then LPs (often recording to chrome or metal tape on good equipment). It was more convenient to listen to a full album then, as you didn't want to make a habit of bringing the cartridge down in the middle, avoiding scratches. I'm not talking about a cheap "record player" with changer stem and arm (always made me cringe), I mean a good finely tuned and balanced hi-fi turntable.
What's lost IMO is the full-size album art and packaging which added to the experience.

The last LP I owned and listened to was the soundtrack for Return of the Jedi so we’re talking 1983/1984.

Good memories from driving north out of LA through Malibu in 2016 with Free Falling on full blast in the car.

Last LP I bought was the Division Bell 20th anniversary collectors edition with LP CD and Bluray of the album
Hi Alicatt,
I have the original release on CD, but this 20th anniversary version past me by without my noticing. (Will have to keep an eye out. Fingers crossed)

The Songs of Distant Earth - Mike Oldfield. Enjoyable background music while working.
Some great albums you guys are listening too and inspired me to blow the dust of a few that I've neglected lately and time to reacquaint myself.
I'm back home in Scotland now and have a decent record deck and amp it maybe old but it plays well. I don't have any of my own albums here and my late uncle's taste in music is not mine
The system is:
Rodgers deck with SME 2000 arm and Shure cartridge to a Sansui AU 555 amp and Mission Audio speakers, it acquired a Marantz CD player just before my uncle passed away
Now to look through 5 or 6 boxes of albums to see if there is anything other than Jim Reeves

Thanks Mark, it is on the whole ancient, the amp and deck date from around 1968 the speakers and CD player are newer it still sounds great after all these years
looks like I need to dust it a bit too

Look for me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Tic Toc...or anywhere you may frequent, besides SimHq, on the Global Scam Net. Aka, the internet. I am not there, never have been or ever will be, but the fruitless search may be more gratifying then the "content" you might otherwise be exposed to.

Nixer, George Benson's Breezin' was the very first CD I ever purchased (in 1990 I believe, for my new Sony CD player in my '89 CRX Si), followed by Rush's Moving Pictures and Steely Dan's Aja.
I really wanted to add a CD head unit when I bought the car (new), but instead I waited for CD players to drop to $200.00. One thing about the late-80's/early-90's I remember so well, the price of electronics (including PCs) were dropping crazy fast.

My very first CD purchase was “Abbey Road” by the Beatles. It was either 1989 or 1990 when I bought it.
I still have it too and it’s in good condition.

How do you know you are old and totally out of touch with the modern consumer?
You listen to complete albums and you also know what an “album” means.

Speaking of albums, what's the most depressing album you've ever listened to?
For me that award goes to "The Final Cut" by Pink Floyd. Great music but man, what a downer of an album!

Clockwork Angels - Rush
A pretty decent album but nowhere near the quality of their music during their peak creative years in the 70's and early 80's.
