Just thought I'd share some pictures of a ship diorama that I commissioned a builder in England to make. It was a long process, and now (nine months or so later) has just finished. Of course, other build projects and ordinary life delayed things. It's 1/350 scale. I should have it within a week..

Very nice! Do you have more? Can I ask roughly how much this cost you to commission?

I don't think you can direct-link from Google Pics frown

I'll post more in a second..
Cost was probably 1800 GBP, i.e., over $2000. Pretty nuts, I know.

I don't really care for the "factory" buildings. Originally the plan was to have a crane on the pier, but that didn't work out..

That water is amazing (along with everything else)! Reflections and wake look so real...

Thanks! Modeling water seems to be tough to do well. He's very good at it.

Yes, the water and particularly the reflections are extremely good.

Agree about the buildings. Should have been more warehouse than factory. But that’s nitpicking.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

Revising it to replace the factories with a warehouse has been my thought, too. I love his work, and am super grateful, but I may make that change on my own. The warehouses in this pic are the look I would like.

Thanks for the info! Sounds expensive but then it looks like it's well worth the money anyway! Any chance of a picture with maybe a ruler or something to get a scale of how big/small it is?

Can I also ask why you had this made? Is it a first of many? Or do you have a previous collection and you're just adding to it?

This picture should help with the size - the plexiglass case that will fit in the groove surrounding the diorama will be just over 27" long, by almost 13" wide.

Years ago I saw a diorama pic online of the ship I was on - USS America. That always fascinated me. Eventually I had one of the builders that post on Model Shipwrights do a destroyer diorama for a 90 year old veteran family member. That turned out so well that I decided to have one done for me also. It was a weird coursing of events that led me to choose Mogami. It's the only display I'll have, and is sort of a retirement present.

I'm guessing that was a WIP pic. Still awesome to look at!! I have some of those paint bottles so I have a rough idea of how small this diorama is! Much respect to the guy that made it!

Thanks for sharing! As someone who can't even finish his Warhammer 40K army, I am in awe at people who can do this!

Me, too, on the admiration of that ability. I have all the patience in the world to create something like that, but just don't have the talent enough to make the effort worthwhile. Wish I did..
Each of the tiny figures in the display is about 2.5mm tall. Imagine painting a hundred of those..
Thanks for the feedback and interest, everyone.

That is REALLY nice. I'll have to give one of these dioramas a try one of these days.

Vienna, 2nd rock left.
Very nice work... pretty dynamic impression for a static model piece.

Thanks. One interesting discovery about these dioramas is that the more dynamic elements that work well in 2D images aren't near as convincing when you see them in front of you in a static 3D. It looks "fake" a bit. Displays like the one linked to below that have a more subdued dynamic element come across better in person.

A lot of things do not look as good when in pictures. I think that's why Photoshop was invented! biggrin

Your diorama looks very good in your pics; I'm sure the real thing is 100x more awesome!
