He was 36 when he joined up! Well above the average age for enlistment I believe.
It will be an inevitable but sad occasion when the last of these great men and women who served in that conflict pass away.

. I was struck by that as well. Former US Senator Strom Thurmond from South Carolina was already 39 when he joined the war effort.

Viet Nam ages 19--23.....19 seems a bit low to me..I wonder if both figures are just for the enlisted troops or officers and staff
I'm pretty sure the Vietnam figure is for enlisted only. Even a 2nd LT is usually at least 21 or 22 since that is the typical age of college/academy graduation.

That makes sense PM,,Take in the regimental CO's and company commandeers most of the senior officers were closer to 30's and our regimental CO was pushing 60 60 is pretty old for a Colonel!

. I was struck by that as well. Former US Senator Strom Thurmond from South Carolina was already 39 when he joined the war effort. My father had an uncle who was in his thirties who joined the SeaBees in WWII. The rumor was that he and his wife had an argument prompting him to run off and join the Navy

Wasn't the draft age upper limit 45 in WW2 for Americans?
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Wasn't the draft age upper limit 45 in WW2 for Americans? Seems that way. The Draft and WWIIOn September 16, 1940, the United States instituted the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, which required all men between the ages of 21 and 45 to register for the draft. This was the first peacetime draft in United States' history. Those who were selected from the draft lottery were required to serve at least one year in the armed forces. Once the U.S. entered WWII, draft terms extended through the duration of the fighting. By the end of the war in 1945, 50 million men between eighteen and forty-five had registered for the draft and 10 million had been inducted in the military.
