I am doing a little research on how often any given award is issued repeatedly in WOFF for a given pilot.

It would be appreciated if anyone who has a long standing pilot, that has been issued an award multiple times, please PM me to identify which awards were repeated and how many times for that pilot.

I am looking for data on both central and entente award issuance.

Your input is much appreciated.

Best Regards

In WOFF, I've had pilots that were awarded the Pour le Mérite (Prussia's highest military order) twice. In real life, this never happened. A highly successful general or admiral (or sometimes a head of state) could receive the PLM with Oak Leaves, but no pilot was eligible for such a high award.

Imperial Germany was formed from several kingdoms, duchies and principalities, plus a few Hanseatic republics (cities). They all had their own award systems, which they kept until the end of the Kaiserreich in 1918. In practice, this meant that successful aviators often received "gongs" from several different states of the Reich. The most famous example was of course Manfred von Richthofen, who amassed a huge number of decorations during the war years.

Another feature of the German system was that the rank of the recipient determined what kind of an award he was eligible for. The crosses of the various orders could only be awarded to officers. The other ranks had their own medals and crosses for bravery. So no PLM for NCOs! There were some notable exceptions, like the iconic Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz), which could be awarded to all ranks.

Some countries allowed repeated awards of the same order, for example the British Distinguished Service Order. For each new award, the recipient added a bar on the ribbon. Mick Mannock was one of the rare recipients of the DSO with two bars. However, I'm not aware of any Imperial German state which had a similar system. Each new award had to be a different one. (But the Austrians awarded bars just like the British.)

Hasse, thanks for your contribution and the added historical aspects of the Germanic awards.

I have a 2 British pilots in WOFF who have earned 3 DSO's and 2 VC's. Double VC's are historically accurate as are DSO's but I'm not aware of anyone earning 3 DSO's.

Come on folks, there must be others out there with long lived WOFF pilots with duplicate medal awards. Let's hear about them.

None of my pilots last for more than two or three weeks, so I am afraid I can't help much, Robert. If only that wasn't the case....

Robert, you have to be a little more patient. Some of us have to stoke the fire under the steam generators before turning on their PCs. I've been shoveling coal under the boiler all day to get it running. So, now that it's on I can tell you I have 2 pilots with 2 Blue Maxes each. The other thing is that I can never get any of my pilots to get more than 7 awards. It seems to be the limit for them. All within the first 6 months of service and despite great performance none thereafter. HTH.

Another quirk regarding German awards in WOFF is that it seems to be impossible to receive either the Iron Cross 1st class, or the Knight's Cross of the House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords. Aris's pilot records confirm this. Every ace should receive the IC 1st class. It was one of the most common German decorations in WW1, with over 200,000 recipients. The Hohenzollern knight's cross was typically the order which preceded the awarding of the PLM.

For a Prussian flying ace, the usual sequence of awards would have been the following:

Iron Cross 2nd class -> Iron Cross 1st class -> Hohenzollern Order -> PLM. The Honor Goblet (Ehrenbecher) was typically awarded after the first victory, but there seems to have been some variance with the practice, especially later in the war as it became more common for pilots to get kills.

As I mentioned in my post above, there were many states in the Kaiserreich, each with their own award systems. So the flying aces of such states would be eligible for different awards. However, the Prussian system was the national one in the sense that every German soldier was eligible to receive their awards, depending on the rank. This explains why for example the Iron Cross was such a common decoration in the Great War.

In short, the German system was rather complicated and to attempt to model it accurately in WOFF is not possible.

.

I have to sneak in here for a moment. First of all, to the best of my knowledge, there have only been three double awards of the VC in the entire history of the honour. Secondly, as much as I enjoy WOFF, the awards system could stand some tweaking. I am sad that the devs chose to encrypt the pilot files so that we can no longer go in and adjust the medal awards to be more historically accurate. None the less, I still dearly love this sim.

Lou, I feel pretty much the same way and I can only hope that the devs understand this. I woudn't be surprised if they tackle the issue in WOTR. If so, we may see it ported to WOFF in the future.

Thanks for the posts folks. The request was intended to validate an effort by JJJ65 and myself to provide a more realistic medal display in the PilotLogEditor java app by JJJ65.

Watch for the update.

Hi all,
JJJ65's Java version 0.8.9 and Rob's associated Medals mod have both been uploaded to the Users Mod page.

Note:
Rob's mod is not Java, so is on the Tools/Utilities page.
JJJ65's mod is on the Java page.

Thanks for all your input folks, it helped me to address the medals mod to more accurately display the medals in JJJ65's Pilot Log Editor Java applet.

If you find any blatant issues, just post them here and I will work with Jara to resolve them.
