This doesn't surprise me. I really couldn't see how SyFy was making much money on this show when you consider the relatively small audience coupled with the high production costs. http://deadline.com/2018/05/the-expanse-canceled-syfy-after-three-seasons-to-be-shopped-1202388026/The article lays out the hard numbers and you'll see right away that the audience kept shrinking with each new season.

Couple that with the fact that if you are not in the US it is very difficult to get the series, I have seen none of The Expanse series 3 yet. The regional locking is just another form of discrimination against those of us that are not in the US I've toned that down a bit as my real feelings about regional locking are a lot stronger than that. I said that to "SA Corey" on their twitter page too Edit: I have just pre-ordered the Bluray of season 3 on Amazon US so should have it by the end of July

Very unfortunate. Maybe Netflix will pick it up, they’re replacing SyFy as that genre leader as it is. It would be nice if they opened up Star Trek Discovery on there in the US too. We’re discriminated against with that one while the rest of the world gets away without having to sub to the CBS streaming service.

If that’s the case hopefully the quality stays where it is. I like how the CGI is used to accent or emphasize the story, not MAKE the story. There are some pretty imaginative scenes, too, such as the space station assault in S2E2 (I think), “Corners and Doors.” The breaching pods were a brilliant piece of engineering, and the fight between the Roci and the stealth ship was great as well. I’d hate for it to become boilerplate.

If they could get to the end of the 3rd book, Abaddon's Gate, it might be a good stopping point in a pinch. I just don't know if they'll get that far with 8 episodes left. It would be nice to see it go further, so I hope they find someone else to pick it up. Apparently that's what they're working on, SyFy wasn't directly producing it. Seems primed for streaming IMO. http://deadline.com/2018/05/the-expanse-canceled-syfy-after-three-seasons-to-be-shopped-1202388026/

/ And this here is one of the main reasons why the show was cancelled. SyFy didn't own the show so the ONLY time they made money from the show was when it aired on their network. All of the dvd sales and streaming rights belonged to the production company.

I’d say there’s too much going on at any one time and that the show jumps around a lot. They don’t do a very good job of showing the passage of time.

... part of the problem was that people were DVR-ing the show to watch later or to binge watch the show at the end of the season and that hurt the ratings, less than half the people watched the show live whether on cable or streaming and those that timeshift to watch later do not count in the ratings.
In that case noting I watch is ever counted, I DVR everything.

DVR time-shifted ratings DO count for a lot of shows but not in the case of "The Expanse" because SyFy did not own the show and thus they did not get any revenue at all from streaming or DVR viewers. SyFy ONLY made money with the show when people watched it live on their channel.
In retrospect, SyFy and the production company which owns the show should have entered into some kind of profit sharing arrangement so that SyFy would not have been 100% dependent on live viewers.

DVR here too. We have shows built up to watch during rerun season since most tv channel streaming apps only show recent episodes. If this is the problem with showing their popularity, the issue is less how interested people are but that their methods of judging interest are flawed. If they want people to watch ads in the DVR era, they need better ads. If we had access to all shows to stream at any time, and a better streaming experience, I wouldn’t bother with the DVR. I can tolerate and ad at the start and halfway through a show when sreaming, but keep it minimal and improve the technology so it works better inserting the ad. Mostly I want to skip the annoying local ads for lawyers, stores and car lots who buy up all the ad slots and pummel us with the same ad over and over.

The local ambulance chaser...um I mean lawyer ads are the most annoying. I think it's even worse in Florida where it seems like half of the nation's lawyers practice law here. As far as "The Expanse" goes, like Ssnake menitoned already, the big mistake was not having an agreement where both SyFy and the production company split the profits from the DVR and streaming viewers.
