Good racing films (as opposed to straight-up documentaries) seem rare to me, as a cinema fan.

I quite enjoy Grand Prix, Rush, and Le Mans.

What are others I should look into?

It's been years since I saw it, but I enjoyed 'Red Line 7000' with James Garner.

If you're a fan of the '67 era Grand Prix cars, then check out 9 Days in Summer if you haven't already, and especially if you're a fan of the Lotus 49.

It's really a promotional film for Ford, but it details the season of both Hill and Clark, and the engineering of the Cosworth and the Lotus. Fascinating stuff, particularly so for GPL veterans, of which you are one I believe? smile

Oopps I missed the documentary restriction. Sorry 'bout that

"Thunder" with Tom Cruise. "Driven" with Sylvestor Stellone. Not a movie that he's remembered for, I know. But, give it a try.

Hey, why not? It's a racing film!

Seriously, some beautiful cars in there. Don Knotts even pronounces “Lancia” correctly IIRC.

"Red Line 7000". Hard to go wrong with Garner, a legit racing enthusiast and talented racer himself.
"Days of Thunder" with Cruise. Film about a guy who races cars with racing as window dressing. Seen it. Watery, weak racing film. Meh.
"Driven". Hmmm. I'll give it a try.
"9 Days in Summer". Clark is my favorite driver of all time, Gurney a close second, and the '60s-'70s is my favorite era. I've seen 9 Days in Summer a dozen times, paid for by Dearborn or not, it's a great film
"Talledega Nights"...I prefer "Greased Lightning"; Pryor was much funnier.
"Herbie" films, saw the originals as a kid. Pass, sorry
"Death Race". Sci-fi flick about weirdo racing stemming from the collapse of the economy. I hear E.T. makes a cameo as race manager. Pass. Also Pass: Death Race 2000.

I want to know about films about real racing that treat the subject seriously, not vanity-piece emotional-growth-romances with Tom Cruise, or Larry the Cable Guy goes Indy-style comedies. And no Podracing either. And no Elvis films for that matter.

Rush is fantastic. Daniel Brühl should have gotten an Oscar for his performance as Niki Lauda!

Le Mans with Steve McQueen is another very good one!

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

"Days of Thunder" was essentially "Top Gun" in a NASCAR setting. I found that movie pretty dumb and the only bright spot for me was Robert Duvall as the crew chief.

"Driven" I found to be even worse than "Days of Thunder" by a long shot. smile

Even Thor was quite good in that movie! smile

Yeah, everything about "Rush" was just perfect.

Rush was an excellent flick, but not perfect. It was more about the drivers and their relationship rather than racing. As a result, it didn’t have nearly enough racing in it. Grand Prix and Le Mans are the only ones to get that right.

There’s a Paul Newman movie “Winning” that had the same issue. Not bad, it’s Newman, but more about the driver and not enough racing. You get Newman and some camera work mimicking Grand Prix though. There’s also a documentary about his racing career by a similar name.

I think there’s a documentary about James Garner’s racing career too, but I forget the name. It was on Netflix at one point.

Senna is a good one if you liked Rush, but it’s a documentary about him, not all that much racing footage.

Last American Hero...a young Jeff Bridges, the story of Junior Johnson essentially, and early NASCAR.
Similarly, Richard Pryor in Greased Lightning.

It’s hard to make a great racing flick, or even car flick. I don’t think Grand Prix and Le Mans will ever be beaten.

And Grand Prix has Toshiro Mifune!! That alone makes it a great film for me.

Days of Thunder was always a fun watch, and I saw it far too many times to count when I was a kid. Some hate it, some love it, but I happened by it a few months ago when at a resort and the film was still quite watchable. Sure, the dialogue is nothing but one-liners and the scenes and action are frenetic, short and to the point, but damn if it didn't draw me in despite the cliche character interactions. Oh, and Nicole Kidman is always nice to look at. smile

Pretty sure you already know this but for those who might not know "Greased lightning" even though Richard Pryor is the star is not a spoof film. It is the story of the first black Nascar driver, Wendell Scott, to win at the highest level of the sport.
Greased Lightning @ IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076106/
It also starred Pam Grier and Beau Bridges.
