I am a semi-pro photographer (I make just enough to know not to quit my day job). I usually shoot motorsport as a paying gig, but I do love airplanes. So we've had two airshows in the last month. The first was up in Waco, for the Heart of Texas Airshow. Grey, windy as all get out, and cold for a Texas spring (probably low forties with windchill). I was there with a student of mine, so we mainly focused on the static stuff, as she doesn't have the glass for aerial work, and I didn't pack a big lens, I just had my 300mm which isn't the best for aerial work. I spent the majority of the time coaching her, so I didn't take to many shots with my digital. If I ever get around to scanning my film, there are some keepers there. They had some neat static display aircraft, including a V-22, E-2, F-18, and several flying P-51's.

This past weekend there was the Central Texas Airshow up in Temple. Maybe I misunderstood the program, but there were no static displays. You could shoot from behind the rope line at the apron, but you couldn't get any closer than that. A few of the AC where parked pretty close, but other where several hundred feet down the pavement. This was a spur of the moment trip, so I just went with was in my bag. I still didn't have my longest lenses, but a 500mm prime (now that feels weird to call it that) f/8 manual focus works okay in the bright Texas sun. I got some surprisingly good shots from the apron, and I'll give them credit the viewing area ran up to about 15' to the edge of the taxi way so you could catch them headed back to the apron pretty easy. Also alot of the aerial program was pretty dang close. They had the Tora, Tora, Tora! program, which is always neat to watch especially as several of the "Japanese" plans are based out of the local CAF field that's about 20 minutes away for me. Also several really good looking T-6's. Surprisingly there were Harriers! I missed there demo sadly, but I got some decent static shots.

Sure is a pretty Marine Corps "war" plane).

The radial cowl pic in you post is just AWESOME...and I am hating my self that I forget what bird that is...

It's a PBJ which is the USMC version of the B-25. Here's their homepage: https://www.devildogsquadron.com/ for about $400 you can take a ride on her.

The cowl would be a Waco biplane. I don't have any full aircraft shots, as I took a bunch on film previously so didn't bother to snap more this time. If I get those scanned anytime soon (I'm only about a dozen rolls behind lol), I'll put them up.

very nice work, as a photographer, I'm tired of all the smoke these acts use. It seems like EVERY New England Air show has the Sky Typers and if there's no wind, you're screwed for a few acts...

This is actually the first time in a while I've seen EVERY bird up have a smoke system really. There's another show at the end of the month, we'll see how that one goes. Fortunately we usually have enough wind it's not an issue.

Alright finally got to the film from the Heart of Texas show (the first one I linked to). I was shooting WAAAAAAAY expired Kodak Gold 400 that day. Mainly as I had a bunch of rolls of it, and it was fast enough I wasn't too worried about needing to bring a tri/mono-pod. Well turns out that the rolls exhibited a BUNCH of grain during scanning, so these certainly have the "film look" everyone loves on social media these days. There are two frames I like enough to print one of these days (and I mean with an enlarger and developing trays, not on a printer), so we'll see if it's as grainy on actual paper as the scans look. There were some other weird artifacts, so I culled them down to the reasonably good looking frames. Turns out I forgot to clean my scanner glass before I got started, so enjoy the dust and cat hair. I like you guys, but not enough to re-scan them lol. Some of you might notice the rainbow effect gracing a few of the photos, these are called newton rings. It's the result the film curling in the holder during the scan, again I like you guys but...

And this last one isn't the greatest photograph, but it brings to mind a thought for me. This is probably what the last thing a lot of soviet solidiers would have seen if the cold war had ever gone hot. It also shows how low they are.
