I've been binge watching Airplane Repo from the Discovery Channel and it occurred to me that my life would be a helluvalot more exciting if the Discovery Channel filmed it.

Gimme some suspenseful music, careful editing involving closeups, Mike Rowe to narrate and going to the store for milk would be death defying!

"But before he can even begin his journey, Frank must negotiate his thirty two hundred pounds of Ford F-150 using it's powerful eight cylinder engine capable of towing twice the truck's weight and attain speeds over ninety miles an hour on the highway out of his driveway - backwards....without any modern technology such as backup cameras or computer AI assistance. He takes a second look back to one side and then the other to ensure it's clear of children or animals that might be crushed under the mixed use tires as easily as paper, and places the transmission in reverse. His journey onto the main street will take him inches from the mailbox and, more dangerously, the four inch diameter steel pole set deep into the earth with concrete reinforcement, in which both it and a set of four lights are mounted, wires for which are live with 110 volts of electricity."

Close up of the tire beginning to turn and...cut to commercial!

More than a couple of people have claimed Airplane Repo is faked, but I think most of it is just editing and stuff. It's not Kevin Lacey's fault the producers focused on the compass when the J-3 Cub he was flying ran out of gas and focused on the one instrument with an "E" on it. It actually took me a second to realize they were showing the compass as if it were a gas gauge. And he landed on a pretty nice grass strip, not some farmer's field. And while they claimed he was landing at night, it was in fact nautical twilight or better, and very much within the 30 minutes past sundown legal limits.

But it's still a fun show to watch.

You're on a roll today biggrin

Discovery Channel should make a show about homebuilt aircraft. Seemed plenty interesting enough what you went trough.

Hell, yeah! I was on the edge of my seat reading about you pulling out of the driveway! I'd watch that show!

I'd watch too!
Don't forget the rockin' guitar background music when...basically nothing happens, but they want to make it feel like it did.
Every episode:
"Work gets crazy so sometimes we've just gotta blow off some steam!"
Go get ice cream, maybe throw a baseball around for 2 minutes.
Loud guitar solo cranks up, constant riffs, jams, power cord...
"Woohoo! That was Cr@Zy! Back to work"

And we have a 3 season hit!

Awesome!

I think I'm going to get a shirt with "PIXELATED BLUR" printed on it (I don't have the budget for post-processing) and either re-edit or make new footage of a flight, do some one sided interview stuff, and get someone with a TV accent to do the narration in Discovery style.

Plus promos for sister shows like Grocery Trips, Mowers (aka Grass Cutters), and Short Order, where I do extreme hash brown selection at Waffle House.

Just need to find a digital video camera for cheap.

Ice Cold in Alex or Eating in ...
They had that show on here a few weeks ago and I taped the lot, got about half way through the second season and feck life is too short I got better things to do smile

I did enjoy the bits with Kevin Lacey tho, nice texas drawl there. It does state that some of it is re-filmed to "protect the innocent" wink

On a side note, I read something about Mike Kennedy being up on charges for letting a cobra get loose and endangering life...

Quick gooogle...

What??? You can't stop there and leave us hanging like that!!! Did you get the milk? Had the store run out? Did you make it back before the milk turned? What mix of concrete was the pole set in? What was the condition of the traffic pole, was it corroded and you were at risk of it falling into your drive path?
You've made me think more about my own journeys too. I never considered how often I put myself at risk in walking past street lighting columns, without the faraday cage protection offered by the vehicle. We operate with 220-240v here too. biggrin

I used to want my own show on Discovery but then the network told me that my IQ was too high to create a show that their audiences would be interested in.

You know someone saw that and said “I’ve been watching that thing and all he had to do was turn a little bit either way and he’d have more fuel.”

Don't forget we'd need the recap of pulling out of the driveway the first 8 minutes back from commercial. Then go to the drama of driving through the neighborhood.

What floors me are the people who still think these types of shows are totally unscripted. How gullible can someone be?

Me! Well, at least in the first few episodes of Airplane Repo. Eventually had to question it since some camera angles meant that the film crew was totally exposed and therefore the scene was scripted.

They started putting in disclaimers at the tail end of Season Two, admitting they "re-created certain events to protect the identity of some of those involved."

I don't fault this one bit - I never thought they were documentaries, after all.

Except "Cops". I hear a crew member was shot and killed recently.
