Hi Guys,

Seems the card prices have normalized a bit. Even 1080Tis are now around for 800EUR, 1070s for 500.

Has someone heard why this would be... temporary lull, or start of a shift in mining? I don't want to spend right now, but if it means saving 200 bucks then I should.

cheers

Hard to tell but I do believe the mining craze is dying down as profits are not what they used to be. I'm not sure if another currency or scheme will come into play that will make it take off again. It could be a gradual decline for the next 1-3 years until another massive mining wave hits for all I know.

Nvidia plans on releasing new GPUs later this year. My GTX 1070 is over 1 1/2 years old and while still a good card I'd probably wait it out unless you really need the upgrade right now. This generation is long in the tooth and I don't like buying GPUs this late in the cycle but again, this depends on your needs and what you currently have.

I heard there was supposed to be a new chip maker out there for miners. Users less Energy.
But I can't confirm that's the cause for sure.
It could just be the drop in prices. people are giving up Bitcoins.

hmmm.. price looks fine,
http://www.bitcoinprice.org/

so I'd guess the chip is the reason.

I would suspect a few reasons:
1. Mining profits being low for the past few months so mining wasn't a good idea for those just starting out, therefore less sales and lower demand, more supply = lower price
2. Lots of ex-mining GPUs on the 2nd-hand market further lowers demands for brand new GPUs
3. Speculation of next-gen GPUs coming soon

#3 alone makes me step back a bit and I think I'll wait for next-gen to come out before deciding on an upgrade option. Hopefully, GPU prices for current-gen would be even better by that time too! I just wonder if I can get a next-gen GPU at a normal price or will I be competing with miners again?

Hold into your money, the prices still aren't normal and new Nvidia cards in Q3 (if you can wait that long) will force the price down further. GTX1080ti are 700 Euro cards maximum.

I agree with Paradaz. But if you really need a card right now (APRIL 2018) then get a Nvidia 1070Ti. This article sums it very well and goes along on what has been posted here:

"Looking at the whole performance spectrum, the GTX 1070 Ti represents the best overall value."

I would wait for the next gen personally, depending on what you have currently. The GTX 1080 will be around two years old when its replacement comes out, if not older. GPU generations are lasting longer than they did in the past. Seeing that you may have to wait another 18-24 months before the replacement for the GTX 2*** generation comes out, I'd rather wait a few months and buy into the upcoming generation while it is new.

The good news is that GPUs tend to be relevant longer than they did in the past. At 1440P my GTX 1070 can still handle practically every game maxed out with 60 frame rates.

A 1080Ti for 700EUR would be the absolute sweet spot. Sure the new series will be faster and better, but realistically for my gaming needs it would do the job just fine.

Upgrading in/before summer seems stupid anyway. Not a time for sitting indoors playing games. I just hope there isn't another new coin coming that drives prices back up.

Bad news. BitCoin and Ethereum prices are creeping back up. Will we see resurgence in miners?

Prices at my favorite online seller is back to December prices. Now whether those prices were inflated to begin with, I'm not sure, but at least it's not stupidly-high like just a few months ago!

Unfortunately, RAM prices are still quite high, about 75% more than when I purchased my RAM kit in 2015 frown

For the time the GTX1080s have been on the market you'd expect a lot lower than current... still hoping to break 700.

I check GPU prices and Bitcoin profitability often -- waiting for prices I'm willing to pay.

Thing is, for AMD GPUs, it might just be better to wait for the next iteration (maybe called Navi) -- rumored only 8 or 9 months away (early next year).

Rumor is that Navi will give RX Vega 64/GTX 1080 performance for about $250. If true, a no-brainer buy for me.

Could be true. Lately, AMD has liked to release their "popular price" GPUs ahead of their "high end" GPUs -- because more folks buy "popular price" than high end.

AMD Computex Press Conference in roughly 13 days may give some clarity.

Saw this mentioned elsewhere. Small form factor, but still a 1080.
I'm not familiar with the brand.

Well, I jumped smile

RX Vega 64 + $60 gift game for $590 (nominally $530 for the GPU -- only $30 above "reference price" -- but I don't take that too seriously). Got pretty much the fastest Vega 64 model being sold at any price (that sold me) -- based on test reports it should be just under GTX 1080Ti FPS and ahead of GTX1080 and 1070Ti.

Cheapest 1080Ti is currently $750 at Newegg. I'll take roughly 10 percent less FPS for roughly 20 percent less dollars (based on $590 price).

Both Vega 64 and 1080Ti are way faster than my RX480 that plays everything I play at 2K (1440p) -- so FPS should not be an issue.

Hopefully, I'll get it and it will actually work as advertised.

Being a fanatic (or demented -- can't decide which), if AMD comes out with a 7nm GPU that's way better in a year -- great -- something else to buy smile If the new 7nm stuff is delayed, then buying now is even better for my psyche. biggrin

Whoa, the price on that RX Vega 64 just jumped back up to $700 ($590+$110). They did say it was on sale for 8 more hours when I ordered it. Glad I jumped first smile

I'm tracking that Zotac Mini 1080ti here in Austria on a local pricetracker, and it's not gone below 750 bucks yet... EUR.

I would assume since I want to have the system end of summer, that I might just hit the time window then demand for the "old generation" will drop before the new one comes out. I don't need the 2080s... - unless we assume Nvidia does a miracle and delivers more performance per dollar on the new cards. But then I don't want to be an early adopter either.

Yes, good prices seem temporary -- I've been checking twice every day (for weeks) looking for the "bargain price". I just got lucky.

Lately, as we all know, AMD RX Vega 64 has been ridiculously priced -- while GTX 1080 and 1080 Ti have often been more cost effective.

I notice GTX1080Ti comes in a range of "speeds" -- and appropriate prices. For ASUS brand, the "normal speed" is $800 right now. The "fast" ASUS GTX1080Ti (that shows up in test reports) is currently $1100 at "my" Newegg site. The cheapest GTX 1080 Ti at the site is $750 (normal, baseline speed). There are, of course, many brands and prices -- that depend on when one checks.

The Zotac Mini is currently $840.

Doesn't GPU prices drop just before or just as the next-gen cards come out?

^ That's my hope. Once people start holding back their purchases in light of an announced successor I would hope remaining stocks will become cheaper.

Normally, I would think that would happen.

Now, GPU prices are artificial (by gaming standards) as they are inflated by cryptocurrency mining "bulk buys".

Cryptocurrency mining was becoming less cost effective. So, card prices may have begun dropping because of that.

Much cryptocurrency mining was done in China and, a few weeks back, the Chinese Government seemed to be "closing the door on mining". That also could have contributed to dropping prices.

However, today it was reported on a world wide site that the Chinese President just seemed to support cryptocurrency mining. He seemed to be saying mining (among other IT uses) was to become a priority. Doesn't matter if he was misreported. If people believe the Chinese Government is backing mining, GPU prices may start to rise again.

As I am always looking for the "under the table" aspects: I can see there may be more to this. But, this is a hardware forum; so, I won't speculate.

Anyhow, prices may now increase in the near term. Your guess is as good as (or better) than mine smile

Got my PowerColor Red Devil RX VEGA 64. Tested it at stock settings with Firestrike Ultra (4K) and standard Time Spy (2K monitor setting).

80+ percent faster than my stock, Reference RX480 8GB. That's a very satisfactory improvement by my standards.

Runs at 260 W during bench marking. Runs at 8 W for normal desktop stuff. Doesn't get very hot during benchmarks.

My card's performance in the benchmarks is equivalent to on-line GTX 1080 results. The GTX 1080 Ti on-line results are about 25 percent faster than my results with my PC (as Paradaz suggested). My Vega card ran at base frequency (not boost frequency) during test.

I'm happy getting it for $590 (now $725 -- too much). But, folks with no urgent need should wait for the new Nvidia models and the AMD 7nm GPUs rumored for 2019. Being me, I'll buy a 7nm when it arrives next year -- if the price is right.

German article today... seems that Nvidia is not in a hurry for the new models and advises people to buy what is available. Maybe next Gen only introduced in August or September.

Not surprised as nVidia still has a monopoly on performance GPUs. AMD is better at mining and I think for price-to-performance, AMD is the better buy for miners but for gamers or those mining different crypto coins, nVidia is the option.

I think we'll still see the founder launch in July (or possibly paper launch given the 1080 release which took months for pre-orders to move) Nvidia will be aware a lot of people are waiting for the next gen.....the advise for people to buy what is available suits them in getting rid of current stock that would otherwise sit on shelves collecting dust and at prices which are artificially high given the instant drop when the new cards arrive.

Cheapest 1080ti right now is the Zotac standard blower design, 760EUR.

End of June I get my play money, so anything goes below 750, I'll jump. I do think 700 is realistic long term with the next gen release, but on the other hand (maybe due to the article today) prices have picked a few Euros again.

Part of me is still wondering if I'm crazy to spend that much money on a single component. But then, a lot of tha bonus goes to my saving account anyway, and I spend waaay more time in front of my PC than the TV.

I bought my 980Ti only to have the next-gen come out the following year. Won't be making that mistake again unless the price difference is really good.

I notice GTX 1070 Ti is down to $420 (on sale) at Newegg. I put it in my cart and pretended to buy it to make sure all the discounts resulted in that price.

And that would have been much better value than the Vega 64 you recently bought, especially at 1440p resolutions. You could have treated yourself to some Nvidia wallpaper for your bedroom with the $160 you would have saved yep

First time today that I see a 1080ti breaking down the 750EUR barrier. Let's hope we stay on this track.

As noted in the AMD thread, Nvidia has made FAR too many GPU chips. 300,000 were just returned to Nvidia by one manufacturer.

Thus, two things are being predicted by pundits: 1. Prices on current Nvidia GPUs will drop more ($500 for GTX1080 at Newegg -- with free game). 2. The new GPUs might be delayed while they sell off the excess current generation inventory.

FWIW.

I wish...

Right now any sensible fan-design 1080Ti still comes in at near 800EUR.

Many people waiting for next-gen.......Nvidia ideally want people to buy up existing stock otherwise they'll never get rid of it

The article about the returned 300K chips hit the German newspapers today. Pretty much all the readers commenting agree that no one has seen a pricedrop yet.

So first NVidia was complaining that they couldn't produce enough cards for the market, now they are complaining that they have too many cards. Yet the price is where it was at introduction, not where it should be after a few years.

ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Mini is $650 at Newegg today. I realize that may not be available to you. But, it is showing another slight step down in our area.

I imagine that things will get cheaper. Given the oversupply of current generation Nvidia cards, sale prices may be very special by Black Friday (given that the new generation will be on the shelves).

Cheapest in my area is now an Inno 3D with dual fan design for 730 bucks...

Black Friday is a tad late for my plans... want to upgrade in September or early October. Bonus arrived in full amount, so ~2300 EUR available for PC.

Thanks Allen,

I just checked amazon.uk and it's not really visible there yet. I found one card for 650 bucks which would be interesting but it wouldn't ship to Austria...

Something is afoot...

Four 1080ti cards now below 750EUR on my comparison website, and those include triple-fan designs with factory overclock.

They're going cheap on eBuyer.com and aria.co.uk at the moment too - £999 cards with watercooling going for £650-£700

I've finally caved in today.

Got an ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1080 Ti which seems to be one of the best board designs around. Coupled with an i7-8700K and two M.2 PCIe Solid State disks this will be a monster of a gaming machine biggrin

Maybe prices could drop a further 50-100 bucks, but then I might have found myself out of stock on the really good stuff. This fit my budget and will run 4K at 60FPS for pretty much any game on the market today.
