I have to wonder if she was wearing her safety belt or not. Tragic but not the first time a passenger was killed by shrapnel (directly or indirectly) from a sudden engine failure

Freak accident, but tragic nonetheless.

Not so freak though, as this is the second SouthWest jet in a couple of years to have an engine malfunction, on the same side of the plane and with the same kind of engine... both incidents lead to the destruction of the engine.

FYI the engine, the CFM56-7, is made by co-made by General Electric, while some parts are made by the French company Safran.

Short GE, anyone?

My guess, having worked in a profit is everything environment before (oil companies) is managerial "pressure".

Not in writing, just there.

Fly it!

I ALWAYS wear my seat belt.

How bad would it suck to get sucked out a window and then do the frozen buzzard skydive for.. SEVEN FREAKIN MILES!

Once you get pulled through a window that is much smaller than you are, the rest of the trip won't be much of a concern.

It's obviously a tragedy for the people involved but a complete triumph for aficionados of Haggart's 'snappy thread title' collection.

Yikes. What a horrible way to die.

Amazingly there was only one fatality from that Aloha flight. The visible damage on the plane would make you think that the body count was much higher.

This is why I get the aisle seat. Those windows by the engine can be hazardous

She was sucked out the window up to her waist ...two passengers were able to get her back into the plane but her injuries were fatal. The pilot was ex-Navy with 32 yrs experience (according to reports) and did a great job bringing the plane down safely .

I suspect it was more than just the window that blew out....they're awful small and it's not like TV where it's explosive decompression.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

Apparently, quite a lot of people didn't wear their oxygen masks properly after the decompression. Neither, judging from the picture in the article, did they tug the mask to start the oxygen flow.

I'm not waiting for those potential Darwin Award winners to get their handbags if I ever encounter a fire onboard.

Amazing composure and control. A real tribute to training and self-control.
