Hi folks. Since before Christmas, I've been trying to get in touch with Executioner about the eech.codebasehq account through PMs and also email. I've also opened a support ticket at codebasehq to see if they can contact him. But we've not had any contact.

At the moment, he is the only account admin that was in contact, and he also pays the subscription fee for the account, which is due to be renewed in August. The codebasehq support have said they'd need his permission in order to upgrade anyone else to an account admin, with the ability to change the billing or renew the subscription.

I was upgraded to an admin a couple of months ago, and I emailed every registered member asking if they still needed an account, and have been deleting those that either said they didn't need one, or didn't reply. So we're down to 15 user accounts on codebasehq, from I think 24 or 26.

However, the codebasehq account is a paid for account, and not free to use. Executioner paid for a year subscription last year, after a couple of months of it lapsing.

Even if we managed to cut the number of users down to 10 (which was my plan with the emails) it would still be $9/month.

So as it stands, the account will lapse in August unless Executioner comes back in contact.

Therefore, we need to decide what to do with the codebase. There are free code repositories, Github being probably the most well known. However, the code was released under licence, and users had to agree to that licence before being given access. This was the main reason it was uploaded to a controlled repo. I'm no legal expert, and so I have no idea whether the licence still applies as the publisher, and software house are no longer existing. I also don't know whether having commercial code hosted on something like Github is even allowed. And then there's the issue of having anyone be able to access it, and use it however they wish, if it's on an open repo.

There's also the hassle of moving the code, as we'd probably want to move some of the previous branches and try to keep the log history intact.

So I thought I'd just post this now so those of us that have an interest can decide what needs to happen. I did wonder whether we could approach SimHQ to host a repo and put it on there, and then access could be controlled, in terms of agreeing to the licence. I could also look into setting up my own server and hosting it. I had thought about setting up my own web server for a while anyway for a couple of other personal projects.

That's important question actually, tried to raise it before but it always ends with nothing.

As for open source repository - you are right that it will be impossible, I am not license specialist either but was told so by experienced developers.

If SimHQ will host repository same way as they did with eechcentral, when it was half broken for year, no thank you. If it will has 99% uptime - sure, why not.

Personal server can provide required functionality, but it will take some of your personal time, and when you will be no longer interested in this project, or just not available, it can make a problem. So it will be your decision, I am not against it but not recommend. Have my own EECH repo available but hardware is not reliable and internet quite slow, so it can be only a reserve solution.

Decreasing Codebase subscription fees and pay for it by ourselves is the best one. But, account owner should grant admin rights at least several active devs. In case of $9/m I can pay half of the sum without problem, but I really believe that we can collect at least part of the payment from the crowd. Not like ask for donation in every single post, but create a topic a month before subscription ends where ask to support project.

That limits choices then to controlled repo. That's what I thought would be the case.

They didn't host it before when it went down. It was hosted by another forum member. SimHQ have hosted it since it was recovered.

If I did it, then I would build in availability. If I ever give it up completely, then I'd arrange for something else before I did. I was going to set up a webserver anyway for my own site that I'm building.

I was thinking of some sort of crowd sourcing for it, but it would depend on who would want to keep funding it. We'd also need to remove 5 more accounts to get it down to the $9/month limit, and we wouldn't be able to add any new users. Perhaps another repo with a similar price but more users could be found.

Hello messyhead,

I had not much time the last months for my hobby and so I'm not often here in the forum. I just read this post and I'm also willing to help.

Sadly I'm very low on money, but to spend 3$ or so per month isn't a great problem for me to keep this outstanding project alive.

Just let me know what you decided to do and I will help as far as I could. I think that there are some other guys too, which don't want that the code isn't available anymore, so altogether we should be able to find a solution.

Nothing so far. There's not enough interest in donating to fund it. I've not looked in to having it hosted on another repo yet.

Hi Messyhead,

I would like to send you the $108 which would hopefully pay for a year. Can you advise how I can do this ( I have paypal) ?

That would at least give you a bit of breathing space.

Cheers,

Andy

That's generous of you both to offer. However, I don't have access to be able to renew the account anyway. Only Executioner had that access.

I'll contact Guod to see if SimHQ hosting it would be a possibility. We've got a few months before the codebase account needs renewed, so that should give time to get something set up.

If SimHQ can't host it, then I'll see about setting one up myself. I don't expect it would be a high traffic site, so I should be able to run a webserver with high availability.

Can someone try accessing this url? You should just see an Nginx welcome page.

EDIT: link removed while I'm setting things up

I'm experimenting with setting up a web server.

Thanks. Still waiting to here back from SimHQ about hosting the code repo, but thought I'd look into what I could do myself.

Hi. I've been looking into this today, and I think the best option would be to use Amazon CodeCommit. It's there hosted git repo, and it can be set up as a private repo. The first 5 active users are free, then it's only $1 per month for each user over that.

https://aws.amazon.com/codecommit/pricing/

It looks quite good. I've got an AWS account already, so I'll try setting up the repo today and see how it goes.

I think we only have about 5 active devs at the moment, so we could maybe manage to keep it free for a while.

As for paying for extras, I'll see if there's a way that the additional users are billed.

I don't think I'll transfer all of the current users over. If anyone is needing a read only copy, then I could do something like have a downloadable copy in my google drive for them to use.

Update: I'm also considering Google Source Repositories. Their definition of a user means that we could have potentially more 'inactive' users than on AWS. Google only considers active users to be those that read or write to the repo. So anyone browsing it online isn't counted. AWS count anyone logging in to the management console as a user, whether they read/write to the repo or not.

Update 2: I'm going to go with AWS for now. I think there definition of an active user is actually the same, it's just subtle differences in how they word it.

The code repo is now up and running on AWS CodeCommit. It's quite a nice interface. All the branches and tags have been migrated.

So if you're working on the code at the moment, PM me and I'll create an account for you.

It works differently from Codebase, in that you generate an SSH key which needs associated to an Amazon IAM account. I'm not fully up to speed yet on how the users are set up, but need a victim, eh, willing participant to try it on.

I'm going on holiday this week until the middle of July. I don't know when the codebasehq account is due for renewal. I think it's August, but I don't have access to that information in the repo. So once it expires, then that the end of that repo as we can't renew the subscription.

So if anyone wants a CodeCommit user set up today or tomorrow, and start using the new repo, then PM me asap. Otherwise you'll need to wait a few weeks till I'm back.
