If anyone is out of his mind and still actually considers paying for Persian Gulf and the empty Hornet, please have a look at this hoovering island.

They still have a all-world ocean as base and then, with hit and miss, add land on top?

it is 4 years or so since it was announced - changing the name now will probably not help to make it more widely known.

Last time I checked (although it was an old build) Cryengine 3 was the same.

Although even the rivers in the updated Caucasus map don't look like that anymore; I assume they'll fix this island. It used to be problematic in certain builds because it makes the land look taller than it is. Very awkward to say the least. But if they've fixed it for the most part in the Caucasus map I don't see why this new map would have this problem by release.

Why is the "all world ocean as base and then...add land on top" approach bad?

Well, to me it look like the island floats and just like Caucasus the water/coast will look wierd all again in these new maps.
1CGS terrain is 100 miles ahead of DCS.
But it could be just me, again.

Nope, there are two of us. The BOX series river banks and coastline look tons better than DCS. That picture just looks weird. Maybe it is just because I am up to 60% on the DCS Forum Ban-O-Meter and can't post anymore, but I don't think so. rolleyes

It was a problem back in the day because if you wanted better water effects, it had a high framerate hit and I was told back then that it was because the entire world was an ocean and under all that land, the sim would still "render" the water effects (or something to that effect) and thus the framerate hit.

Weird that Sith took the picture away from the post. I wonder if it's because of this thread? smile
