Help me save some money and tell me that it's trash We got this in our office for a monitoring solution: https://www.monitornerds.com/lg-43ud79-b-preview/It's a 43" size LCD/IPS with a 5ms response time and 4K resolution, for under 700 bucks. Which is kinda dirt-cheap. Two problems I see: 1) It's gonna be a tad big for sitting up close like a normal work desk 2) My GTX970 won't be able to run most of my games at 4K, so a lot of titles I'd run to 1920x1080, which is a quarter res (and thus I hope it wouldn't look too bad for interpolation). I can imagine that a screen this size would be an awesome experience for racing, not sure how a shooter works.

I use a 32" 2K center monitor and 2x 24" on each side in portrait mode. The measured coverage is 49" across and 21" high with monitors in "wrap around" setting (just measured it while writing this).
One plus: 32" 2K that close to my face (30" - 32" from my eyes) makes Eyefinity unnecessary for most games. Rather, I use the side monitors for other office-type stuff. Moreover 2K does not show pixels.
I've given thought to what would be perfect for my space. 32" is not quite large enough to be perfect. I was toying with the thought of 36" or so.
43" seems almost too large -- but at 4K I would seriously consider it if I had the GPU to run it. In my case, it would do away with the wrap around side monitors -- but, I'm not sure I'd like that for office work. By the way, my current set up cost over $1000 (so $700 seems good).
However, you wanted a bad side to the purchase. Here it is -- the monitor is the most important part of a "visual" experience -- e.g. a game.
The monitor you show has native 1000:1 contrast. Anything less than 3000:1 is unacceptable (seriously). Shoot for 5000:1 if you can get it (my current 32" is 5000:1 native) and 100 color gamut. That contrast and gamut really shows the colors in depth -- even in a darker room. The best monitors are over 110 color gamut.
A non-expert opinion FWIW.

Nope, go and spend some money.....but you will definitely need a big graphics card. I think it's a bit pointless knocking the resolution down to 1080p because at the end of the day this is a move for huge real estate and better graphics and running at 1080p will most likely look worse than a smaller monitor. I sit about 2-3 feet away from a 42" 4K screen and here are a couple of bullets to counter yours; - For normal work a screen that size is awesome, because the resolution is so large (@ 4K) you can have multiple windows on display that are crystal clear......I have the scaling for text/apps etc set at 225% so the icons etc aren't microscopic.
- For racing, it is outrageous...enough said.
- For shooters, it is outrageous....and you can increase the field of view in comparison to smaller screens all the way through to about 110 degrees before the fish-eye kicks in. Games like BF4, Arma 3 etc severely come to life....but as you mentioned the 4K res needs some serious grunt. I have a GTX1080 and most of my games are over 60fps with a couple of the more taxing titles 40-50fps with everything maxed out. I wouldn't go back to a smaller screen/resolution now.
- Flight sims also shine with such a huge resolution.
- If the TV/monitor you mention has built-in upscaling, then films/TV is awesome too and even 3 feet away from the screen you can't see any pixellation. I run Sky TV (effectively Cable TV) via one of the HDMI links on mine and it's flawless.
Plus, that monitor looks awesome....what are you waiting for?

Damned. Not quite the scary stories that would save my wallet. Allen, point taken on contrast, but my current one is even worse and I would rather go for size instead of blackness/contrast which somehow never was such a thing to me. I can't quite imagine if that would make such a difference for example in a racing title. I'm coming, for comparison, from a close to 10 year old 27" 1920x1200 Dell. Which was a monster when I bought it back then, but Paradoz' post reminds me that due to my new chair I'm also sitting further away now than before and I would have the 2-3 feet distance you mention. I'm expecting a tax refund next month. Let's see No way to go for a GTX1080 now, though. New PC planned for summer, and with the miners driving prices I can't say what will be my choice, I might even have to stick with the 970 a bit longer. OTOH the money for the screen would pay for more disk space and a 1080 in the new tower, but then what would I use it for... Crap, might want to win the lottery.

Have you looked at a 1070Ti instead of a 1080? Might be a good enough savings for minimal framerate loss?

Well, the idea seems to be that the constant use and consistent temp means the GPUs aren't as overworked as you think, meaning a GPU that is at a certain temp all day would be no worse off than a GPU that goes up and down in temps and fan speeds and loads throughout a day. As to whether that holds true, I'm not sure. How would you test a GPU anyway? You could probably run a benchmark and compare with known numbers, but this may only show a broken vs. working GPU. How do you know if your GPU is working at 100%, 80%, or 70%? How would you know that your GPU has had "heavy use" if you didn't know it was a mining card?

Just the cheap LG UJ6300. Picked up one from ebay for $200 shipped, two more from Dell on sales at $240 https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/uj6300The lower dell touchscreen is running your fine work Ice! Really need another 1080ti in a lot of stuff @4k but not at today's prices. Maybe next gen 1080ti equivalent will be better. Falcon playable, P3D 4.2 playable, IL2 Playable, ARMA not so much, DCS not so much
