Personally, I used to have a home system but my recent return to Elite has made me move base for the moment. My new and maybe temporary home base is just outside of a pristine metallic ring so great for mining and getting those mining-sourced materials. There are good material traders nearby too. I still have my other ships on the first home system but most of my working ships are on the new base.
When I choose a home I look for the following criteria. Ocellus or Orbis starport, short arrival distance, RES sites within a few hundred Ls, good module selection. I've been a Fed until now, but I am switching to Imperial. Imperial ships look a lot better, to my eye. I avoid the Coriolis because you have to search for the slot. With Ocellus or Orbis it's a little easier.
I like your ship's name, and looking at the 3D image of the Chieftain on the dash, it does sort of look like a frog. Is that how it got it's name?
You have a beautiful home Wingy, thanks for sharing

I hope you don't mind Wingnuts but it's a good idea for a thread and I would like to share my new home too. I moved here about a week ago when I decided to grind out some Empire Rank to get the Achenar permit and a Courier.
It's an Imperial Orbis Starport, arrival distance of 62 Ls and has a few RES sites nearby of course. Has most of what I need, but not the best Module selection or options in the ship shop (Agricultural). Would have liked better outfitting, but what are ya gonna do? I liked the wildly dissimilar planets so close together. Nice view from my balcony, so I stayed.
I'm at the CG right now, but I took a couple of shots upon my arrival.
The neighborhood.
And home. For now

About a week ago I pulled stakes and moved to a nearby system called Dvorsi. Imperial, high-tech, industrial, refinery. Has RES, but about 800 ls. Not bad.
The main thing I liked about it is it has at least 35 landable planets! My station orbits arsenic. It's a great home for mat collectors.

Thanks to this thread I know that I have been in Dvorsi for nearly a year. It's a great system. Empire. One of the best raw materials systems I've seen. Short run to the station from the star (Fowler Orbital). Some RES, but not great for that, though Exioce right next door is excellent. It's high tech refinery which has always given good deliveries, and it's been in boom ever since I got there I believe.
But I'm starting to get the wandering itch and looking for a new home. Believe it or not I spent the last three hours looking for a new home, Not just flying around, which I've done in the Anaconda of all ships, but mostly on EDDB searching and comparing likely new homes. Have not come to a decision.
Criteria I would like to have
-- Short run to station from star. Less than 300 ls is ideal. -- Federation. Negotiable, as I want to start working on Fed rep again after a year with the Empire. But this isn't too important right now -- Orbis station. Ocellus is second choice. I'm sick of the Coriolis, and I don't like them anyway. Would love to go back to an Orbis like Luyten Market above -- Several landables with a good variety of raw mats. Polonium is a plus -- Within a couple of jumps of Jameson memorial. I thought about just settling down there, and I may still do. But with only four factions it's not exactly what I am looking for. But to have it close enough to be convenient would be great. -- Some rings for RES and maybe good mining? Once I've hit Trade Elite (if) I don't know how much mining I will continue to do. So not important really in the long run. -- Mat trader. Manufactured is best -- High Pop -- Boom state
I've found a few that meet most of these conditions, but not all. Conway City in LTT 4961 is the leading contender, it even has a tech broker in addition to the mat trader, but it's Coriolis.
If anyone knows of a suitable station/system I'd like to know about it.
Or if you'd care to share why you chose your current home that would be interesting too.

Oh and Wingy, do you still use the same HUD colors? If so, can you share your settings? I have a pleasant color, but too monochrome with little separation like your pic above shows with the green and orange. Would like to give that one a go.

D, Shin is not optimal as a home system. Since it’s an independent system, you’ll get no superpower rank when running missions outta there. I stay there mostly cuz I can’t be arsed to move.
Agreed. I was a little disappointed in it to be honest. The module and ship availability are unmatched of course. So that's why I want to land somewhere fairly close, but don't need to base there. Conway City is 50 LY, so two jumps at most in any of my ships. If it were Orbis I would have already begun the move. Haven't been there so yet to see which type of trader and broker it has. I might check it out later tonight.
It is 22 ls arrival, Fed, high tech refinery, boom, tech broker, mat trader, 8 landables, one gas giant (with rings?)
Big downside is only the controlling faction seems to be Fed aligned, the others are independent I think. Plus the boring Coriolis station. But the things it does have going for it are good.

Nice thing about Shin is that’s it’s in a central location. Sol, most of the engineers, Empire are all within a few jumps. As an aside; I just re-engineered my shield gen on the ‘vette, now rocking out at 8013 mj. Woot!!!!
Why yes still using same color profile. It is "NO2O Deep Sky-Dodger Blue Dark Orange. I used ED Profiler to install it. Simply could not stand that orange any more.
Come take a look at the system I use. Somerset Station in I Carinae. Controlling faction are "Secret Billionaires" and they are independent. One jump from Shinrata and as Bo stated in't centrally located.

When you get to the point where you have a fleet of several ships and a large number of stored modules, it makes sense ( to me ) to have them all in one location. Plus, a home port tends to give better missions due to the fact that I run a lot of them from there. The more missions you run, the higher your rep which leads to better missions.
Bohemond just wrote the main reasons for having a home. There's also a roleplaying appeal to doing this, but most players won't care about that I don't think. But having all ships and modules in one place is nice. The main reason is staying in one place allows you to build rep with the factions there, resulting in meeting the requirements for better missions. And because factions are in more than one station usually, the effect spreads around the area. Anytime you are looking over the mission board, scroll down to the requirements not met section. Any that show the rep as the reason, would be available if your rep were higher.
And aside from all of that, a good home can give you benefits such as better module selection, good bounty hunting, good mining or raw mats gathering and so on depending on what criteria you used. Lots of players just go where the solar winds take them, but for me I like to have a home base.
Here's Conway City. What a cool spot. Who needs gas giants when your base is at a ringed HMC? Conway Twitty has Low, High and Haz RES within .22 ls, in the ring shown here. How convenient!
Just a random shot of the view out of the Conda as I visit potential home systems. This is Kwattrages.

OK, thanks for the explanation. I'm not too fussed about having all my stuff in one location as they can be shipped to you for a small fee & a short wait, and is probably cheaper & faster than returning to the home base in any case. But the rep thing is more tangible, even though I'm not too interested in attaining rep or higher missions right now.
"They might look the same, but they don't taste the same."
Re; rep and better missions: as monetary concerns become less of a driving force for me, I find myself taking missions based on what kind of material rewards they offer. It’s a good way to collect the higher grade rare and very rare mats. Another benefit to having high rep with mission givers.

Sell me on it Does it meet any of the criteria I listed above? Not too keen on independents at the moment. My superpower rank isn't great, and I don't grind it, so it helps to have home-base factions to generate rep on missions. One station I checked out yesterday had two Fed and two Empire factions at it. Coney Gateway I believe.
By the way, the tech broker at Conway Twitty is Guardian and the mat trader is Encoded. Honestly, if this station were Orbis, and if the mat trader were manufactured it would be the perfect system for me at the mo, meeting all criteria. The one thing nagging at me is the fact that only the controlling faction is superpower aligned.
