Giesemaschine; You can do that but you have to do it through the ME mod created by JJJ65. It is available along with a lengthy "ReadMe" tutorial, on Sandbagger's mods page. Look for it and if you have any problems just let us know. Best Regards additional note: check this link for the mod: mod thread about ME (Mission Editor)

Go to Quick Combat and set it to “free flight” (I think that’s what it’s called), select your plane, area, altitude, season, time of day, etc and fly to your heart’s content.

Fullofit;
I think he is talking about "Campaign" missions and not Quick Combat but if I am wrong then your point is valid.

That’s the point, to fly around and get to grips with local landmarks, you don’t need to be in the Campaign. And if one absolutely needs to be in the Campaign, then flying a mission and not following the rest of the flight to the front is another option. WOFF is flexible enough to give you all these options. Plus Lone Wolf missions with or without ME.

As Robert said, the Mission Editor will allow you to do this. It's my favorite mod and is highly recommended. I also use it to select my plane when the game assigns the best ones to the historical aces even though my rank and number of victories makes me more deserving than most of them.
If you don't want to use the mod you can just wait until you're airborne and then use the S key to "split" from the formation. This will work even if you're the flight leader. The rest of your flight will continue with the original mission instead of following you around.

Quick answer - nope . That's why you'd want to use the editor with Campaign Mode
