Amazon has several variations on Victory at Sea on DVD. Very fondly remembered, and I have the soundtracks on vinyl.

Can anyone recommend which DVD version is the best? Cleanest/sharpest transfer, sound, most worthwhile?

Thanks

I remember seeing those episodes on PBS way back in the 1980's and early 90's.

Some things are so good, you gotta have two of them!

EDIT: I'll check to make sure they're identical.

Hard to tell in a back-to-back comparison which is better between my two sets (takes a while to cue up an episode), except that the one on the right (dated 2006 vs. left [blue one] dated 2009) seems to have cleaner sound, maybe even a clearer picture (could be my imagination about picture, having a cleaner sound). Not what I expected since it's 3 years older.

The right one has 3 DVDs vs. the left having 2 (same 26 episodes, nothing extra) but it also states "Digitally Re-Mastered on 3 DVDs" whereas the left box has no such statement. Of these two, I'd go with the right box (with waving flag).

Same amount of material, IE hours of video, I'm assuming so sound like the one with only 2 DVD's is compressed more. I've read various reviews of these DVD set's and they seem to be all over the place, some people swear it's great and the next reviewer says it's junk.

Depends, you can't go wrong either way as Richard Rodgers and Russell Bennett were gods among men. I would just make sure whatever you buy has all 26 episodes.

You might want to try the 2hr movie version which is a compilation of the series. Not as in depth, but has the entire soundtrack in the movie as well.

Thanks everyone. I've found that I even have the full soundtrack on disc (as well as 3 album original vinyl from RCA) from the History channel; listening now.

" I've read various reviews of these DVD set's and they seem to be all over the place, some people swear it's great and the next reviewer says it's junk."

I've seen the same reviews and that's why I asked for opinions. So, I'll be getting the one on the right, with the waving flag.

Thanks again everyone!
