In the update one of the exes is named "V36NewMapMPonly.exe"
It is multiplayer only but can be by a single player who does not fly online.
This may seem contradictory, but what happens is this:
You need to have used the Mission editor to load a game, and then click the big yellow button to put the multiplayer settings into your eaw.ini file.:
If you are at GameRanger the normal "lobbied" launch will occur as usual.
If you are not, but running the exe on your PC then the game will go straight to the multiplayer location screen, just like "normal" versions do when you select multiplayer from the opening screen.
Click "Internet TCP/IP...". The little address box appears. Do not enter any address but just clik "OK"
You will then see a screen like this with the "NEW" button active:
Click "NEW" and the "Session parameters" screen will appear.
Then you can launch and fly as a single mission.
Flying a single mission this way has some advantages because additional settings are available which are not available in normal single missions.

The latest exes read an additional file, if it is present.
The reason for this is that when we flew the Dunkirk intercept there was an enormous number of bombers and fighters, a lot of fun, but we got shot to pieces very quickly.
Messing around with the source code relating to formations I was able to get the exe to use three numbers in a special file.
If the numbers are all zero then there is no change, but using 3, 2 and 0 brought the formation down to a manageable size.
The file containing the three numbers goes in the theatre folder, so that it only applies to that theatre and not globally
