I just saw that this sci-fi classic was made into a movie that was released today. This was probably the first sci-fi book I read, waaayyyy back in the late 70s or early 80s, so I think I’ll go see it. Maybe my 14 y/o nephew will be interested. Hopefully it’s as interesting as I remember the book to be.

It had an underwhelming opening box office performance that fell short of Disney’s expectations. It also has a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie was made for kids just like the book was. This was a major complaint from almost all the critics: the film did not attempt to make the necessary changes so it could appeal equally to adults and kids.

Ah, that makes sense. No wonder it didn't appeal to me.
Finding a balance so a movie can appeal to kids and adults is a witches brew that almost never happens so the critics have their heads up their behinds if they are basing their criticisms on that aspect.

That's why Pixar has the reputation it has in the industry. Pretty much all of their movies like Toy Story, Wall-E, Cars, Up!, etc. have appealed to both adults and kids.
