I recently decided to reinstall FSX on my ASUS gaming laptop. Nice rig, I've never had a problem running anything on it. But I noticed that the fans where really screaming when FSX was running and the back felt too warm for my tastes.
So, I downloaded an app called coretemp. I ran it and turned on the app. Now, my highest allowable temperature for the CPU is 100 degree centigrade. Then, I guess, it's fried. And most say don't let it get over 80. I run FSX, and...87degrees! No wonder the fans where running so fast.
I've tried flying default planes over default terrain and dropped the res from 4096 to 2048. No change. 85, 86 and 87 degrees. I ran DCS 2.5 and the highest number I saw was 68.
So, no fsx until I find a way to get those numbers down. Or can I? Is the Steam version optimized a bit better (a lot better?). Or maybe it's time to switch to Xplane 11. Any FSX flyers out there seeing numbers like that?

On my old laptop, I think temps used to get up into the 90's when playing FSX. I was obsessed with monitoring the temp for a while and trying to cool it down (played with fan settings, bought a cooling pad, etc...). Eventually gave up and just played the heck out of it, and the laptop worked just fine up to the point that it was out dated and I decided to get a new one.

Of course, this is just my experience and doesn't mean you won't damage something. But if I had to guess, I'd say you'll be fine with those temps and to just have fun flying!

Yeah, a part of me was wondering if I'm worrying a bit too much. And, if I'm not mistaken, the CPU will shut down if it gets too hot, won't it?

Yeah most modern CPU's will, also you'll see all kinds of glitching, and weirdness as things get to the danger point. If everything looks fine, then you're probably good. As far as the why remember FSX is a going on a decade now, and the code wasn't written to use modern RAM, GPU's, and mulitcores efficiently.

I know. I think this is probably the last time it will be installed. If Windows crashes, or for any reason I have to uninstall FSX, I think I'll be looking around for another civilian flight simulator. It had a good run.

would not worry too much about it. modern cpu's have automatic throttling built into them. they'll throttle down the cpu if it gets beyond its max temperature (as designed by the manufacturer) if things get really bad the pc will probably just shut down.

90 is warm and 100 is hot, but anything under 90 is fairly routine in a laptop meant for gaming. there's not a lot you can do, but consider spraying some air into the vents around the graphics card and other fan areas. you may be surprised how much dust is in there, and it makes a very big difference in temperature. i reduced temps by about 10c just by spraying some duster spray into my gaming laptop

I had the same problem years ago with a certain rig (but to be fair this was during some HOT weather). Not even sure if it was FSX, possibly could have been FS2004.

It had 120mm intake and exhaust fans, but this was around the time 80mm fans were going by the wayside, and these 120mm fans weren't there for more cooling, but to be quieter. And they were, bigtime.

I got some replacement fans that had these little switches on a wire with three settings, and the highest setting was LOUD, but improved the cooling so much. I had to improvise a bit to get those switches outside the case (so there was like an inch of wire hanging out the sides.

It's not something I'd recommend to any "Average Joe User" but might be a cheap and easy solution for you - assuming these things still even exist....

Well, I'm pretty much "Average Joe User." Hell, my name actually is Joe. I'm not really crazy about having those wires hanging out of the laptop, and most likely couldn't do it anyway. Appreciate the answer, though. My laptop is going on 4 years old, so I'll just live with it. Not ready to upgrade. Like Malibu said, I'll just ignore it and have fun flying.
