I took a break before starting Nemisis Games. Cibola Burn was pretty slow. Do they pick back up?
The show should be at a really interesting place.

I'm close to finishing Nemesis games. It's good, if grim. So, yeah, I think it's picking up pace. I have to say though, the amount of shooting in these novels is pretty crazy. I mean, sure, it kinda makes space opera more interesting, maybe it's a commercial necessity. I for one would have enjoyed more "Miller, the early years" noir "space cop" novels. The big story isn't bad, and holy #%&*$# what's happening in Nemesis Game but ... well, I guess I liked the first two novels best, and would have loved to read more stories about everyday life in the Expanse.

They did bring out some novellas giving some of the backstories of the characters, The Churn is about Amos's history and there are others about different characters from the books that just lightly touched on in the main story, they do give useful background to why this or that is happening. Some of it has been incorporated in the TV series to fill out the whys and wherefores, like The Butcher of Anderson Station gives the account of what Fred did during the massacre.
The books are available on Kindle along with The Expanse: Origins an illustrated story (comic book?) of the backgrounds of the main characters. Disclaimer I have not read Origins.

Yeah, well, I saw that on Amazon but it felt a bit overpriced. Plus, I'd rather read a few more good detective novels in a science fiction framework, like Larry Niven's Gil Hamilton series etc.
As soon as you introduce new technology and new places to live, new forms of crime will emerge. It's not that the Corey duo isn't aware of it or has no sense for this. The first novel demonstrated their capability in spades. I can't blame them for shifting the attention to the big picture, but as much as I like the Roci's gang of four I would have liked to read about other characters and settings. We got a glimpse of life on Ceres and Eros, a little bit about Earth - but not much about Tycho station, Mars, Ganymede, Saturn, the small rocks. And like they wrote, "the Belt doesn't have law, it has cops".

I mean, what I like about crime/detective stories in general is that you can write about basically any topic that you like, be it political or private, as long as it involves some crime that needs to be investigated. The process of the investigation illuminates all kinds of corners of a society, so there's a lot of opportunity in it to imagine everyday life in the Expanse. Of course it would mean to go back in time and suspend the progress of the big story, and it's the author's prerogative to decide what they want to write about. All in all I am very glad that the series exists in the first place, and that it was so well adapted in the TV series (well, I can only speak of the first season, so far).

Isaac Asimov wrote a few detective novels in his time with a SciFi background featuring Elijah Bailey.

Gil Hamilton now that is a blast from the past, I remember reading The long arm of Gil Hamilton and enjoying it very much but never knew there was a series, I must go and have a look as I do like Larry Niven's writing.

Well, "The Long Arm of Gil Hamilton" was "the series", essentially. It was the short story collection that put them all into one book.
And thanks, I have Season 1 on BR, just waiting for season 2 to be released in a German version, eventually. I'm not in a terrible rush. I've just finished Nemesis Games, so I'm still ahead of the story. But I liked the attention to detail that they were putting into it, in season 1. Never thought SyFy was capable of ever launching a new series with high production values after all those years where Sharknado was actually something of a highlight.

I should clarify that I'm not so much looking for a "Detective story". Much of what's published in the science fiction domain is too much of an antiquated whodunit that is revolving around seemingly super-clever, unsolvable murder mysteries. I'm looking for the modern crime novel, something that Ian Rankin would write, just with fewer scotsmen and with more space stations.

It really is a miracle that "The Expanse" even exists at all on SyFy. It's the most expensive series ever made by SyFy but the actual audience/ratings for the show have been pretty small. I really don't know how SyFy makes a profit on the show.

Got this from Variety.com

"Season two, currently airing on Wednesdays on the NBCUniversal-owned cable net, has drawn reasonable critical praise, if not necessarily a massive linear audience. Its current season average is a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 600,000 viewers in Nielsen’s Live+Same Day Ratings."

SyFy must have really revamped their business model because 600k viewers per week would have doomed ANY show just a few years ago.

Thanks Jim.

I haven't owned a TV since the mid nineties. Don't miss it at all, I just watch mostly what I want on the internet.

I tried both Fox's and SciFy's "internet streaming", total joke.

I'll catch it next year thanks.

Fox has gotten a little better, but they need to list all episodes and seasons to be taken seriously.

Did you check Hulu? I know they have several Fox shows. I think the SyFy shows though are only on SyFy the last time I checked.
