I did not know that was a cover song . . . please post ones that caught you out also . . .

Saw a song on a compilation album track list by Sandie Shaw called (There’s) Always Something There To Remind Me
and wondered if it was the same song I knew from the 80's band Naked Eyes.

I thought I would have known this was a cover already but sure enough it was and from the Wiki found it was first released by Lou Johnson & written by Burt Bacharach..

Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/(There%27s)_Always_Something_There_to_Remind_Me

Check it out, I like it very much. The 2nd song is good also and I am off to check out more of his music as he is new to me smile

Lou Johnson (1964):

Naked Eyes (1983):

PS: here is the Sandy Shaw version that lead me to Lou smile

This is a great idea for a thread!

I had very limited exposure to different kinds of music when I was a teenager and while in college so there are a bunch of songs that I had no clue were covers when they first came out.

A few examples that immediately come to my mind,

"Hazy Shade of Winter" by the Bangles. Original by Simon & Garfunkel

"Gold Dust Woman" by Hole. Original by Fleetwood Mac.

"Lean on Me" by Club Nouveau. Original by Bill Withers.

"Smoking in the Boy's Room" by Motley Crue. Original by Brownsville Station.

I remember Paul McCartney mentioning something along these lines in an interview. Apparently one of his kids was in school having to explain to another kid about who actually wrote this really cool Guns-n-Roses song called "Live and Let Die."

Anyway, here's my submission to the list: "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks. I first heard it from Van Halen and thought for a long time that it was originally theirs.

I love Van Halen’s cover of “Pretty Woman”.

I don’t care at all though for the G&R cover of “Live and Let Die”. Axel’s vocals are totally not a fit.

I'm drawing a blank. I probably listen to lots of covers that I don't know are covers.

The rusty wire that holds the cork that keeps the anger in
Gives way and suddenly it’s day again
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done
Two suns in the sunset, hmph
Could be the human race is run

I've been around long enough now to realize there are many covers because I was listening to 60s and 70s music when it was still new...lol. However, there are still some from before that time that catch me off guard.

Going the country route...

Wagon Wheel...fun song by Darius Rucker yeah?

Nope.

In 1973 Bob Dylan messed around with some chord progressions and a chorus, but never finished the song. At the time it was called "Rock Me Mama".

Many years later a cool Bluegrass band called "Old Crow Medicine Show" took the chords and chorus and made the classic version of "Wagon Wheel". My favorite version. smile

Then many years later Hootie went country...lol. Not bad. Sounds a little too "clean" for me. Kind of like a digital to analogue version.

Here's another great example. Chris Stapleton tore up the country airwaves a couple years ago with "Tennessee Whiskey" (AWESOME SONG!)

However, country legend George Jones did it first...and it was good then too. smile

This version is great with Justin Timberlake helping out.

And of course the viral cover from YouTube star Kris Jones which is also amazing.

Wow. I am shocked that “House of the Rising Sun” was not an original song by the Animals.

The first version of the song, from the “Secret Treaties” album.

A second version, also by BÖC, from the “Imaginos” album.

And a cover by Metallica.

How original and crazy did you think Bjork was when she released this song?

1995 - Bjork - It's So Quiet

Well, listen to this . . . smile

1951 - Betty Hutton - It's So Quiet

"Hard to Handle." The Black Crowes made it popular in the 90s so I had to play it on the drums quite often, but I didn't know that Otis Redding did it originally:
