These United States of America
I haven't seen a really good movie in quite awhile. I watch things on Netflix and Amazon but its hit and miss. I watched "Wormwood" and quite enjoyed it though some aspects I found suspicious. I imagine a genuine, hard-hitting, button pressing, toe stomping conspiracies investigation into the lawless underbelly of the CIA would not be prominently displayed and aired as a "Netflix Original".

I tried "Silence" which I wanted to see because I like Liam Neeson and enjoy movies with similar subject matters and settings but it was rubbish. I could not get but half way through before I had to shut it off.

I've never heard of "The Shape of Water" but that looks kooky and interesting to me. I'm always looking for things similar to John Carpenter's version of "The Thing" but good monster movies are hard to find. If anyone has any suggestions that has that similar feel(alien/monster threat-cold environment-mysterious antartica-confined-suspense) I'd love some suggestions. Space monsters are good too. I enjoy the Alien movies and some of the Predators. I've seen "The Abyss" a couple of times so I don't really need to see that anytime soon. Loved the setting but I greatly disliked the goofy "aliens trying to help us avoid nuclear war" ending. "The Sphere" also had a great setting but man that's not a very good movie at all. I saw that "The Thing" sequel with the female protagonist and remember it being okay but its been awhile. Some years back I bought "Leviathan" which I remember seeing most of as a kid on tv but I haven't opened it yet and re-watched it.

Anyhow I'm kind of in the mood for that but there's so much junk in the monster genre but every once in awhile you find a indie or small budget movie that's pretty good. I just hate wading through them because often times you don't know if they are any good until you spend the time to watch some of them.

this morning I watched Haven, 3 Andy Griffiths, and a Good Doctor on the DVR. Saw Star Wars at the 3D theater for Christmas, then spent 2.5 hours creeping home during the ice storm.

That's because Bane always has spare ammo and fuel hanging around just in case.

Frances McDormand was quite brilliant in this as was Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson. Great story, great everything really. Definitely going on the repeat view list.

Dunkirk My mum is a fan of the original (1958) and she wasn't sure that she was going to like this one at all.She did! Although she did point out that she thought the Spitfire flown by Tom Hardy was never going to run out of fuel or ammo smile I liked the film once you got used to the constant story swap.

I was surprised how quickly Three Billboards came and went in our theaters, we wanted to see this but was shocked when I realized and had come and gone already...

"Cars 3"

You definitely lose a lot of appreciation for this if you don't care about NASCAR racing. Overall it was a pretty good movie.

Just finished "11.22.63" (Hulu exclusive) last night, VERY good mini-series. I was kinda bummed with some of the decisions they made for the story but it was really enjoyable overall.

I really need to watch that some day. So far the only stuff I've seen with Mifune are the Akira Kurosawa films.

I prefer Kurosawa's approach, myself.

Criterion Collection has the Samurai films. Quite good, you'll like them.

Black Panther - another very good entry in the MCU. A-

I, Tonya - it's advertised as a biopic, but it's actually a very funny 'dark comedy' to me. Allison Janney killed it as the mother and Margot Robbie was very good as Tonya. A-

Those old/classic war movies from the 40's and 50's are a very mixed bag in my opinion.

The over-acting is plentiful but it's also nice to see actual real military hardware on screen instead of CGI!

Oh for sure. What's also fun is spotting actors from other films made at the same time.
