High over the Front
Since we put up a Rickenbacker ebook earlier I guess we will even the score.
I have read, in other books, that this really was written by him with the language and grammar reportedly cleaned up by some female (with whom MvR apparently teased some “nosey” neighbors by saying it was his fiancé) who typed up his notes and he reviewed them afterward. The War Office apparently made changes also so remember it was written during the war during one of MvR’s leave periods in 1917. JFM can school me if I got any of that wrong.
Still a fun read and I believe one of my first WW1 aviation books I ever read as a young lad. Got a hardcover edition from somewhere unfortunately long since lost. Without further ado:

Yes, Duke, as you said the original book was "written" in May 1917, during MvR's leave. During the day he dictated his memoirs to "a woman from Berlin" who wrote typed them at night. That link goes to the 1918 translation (also available in book form as "The Red Air Fighter") that is flawed in a few areas. Peter Kilduff's 1969 translation "The Red Baron" is much more faithful to the original. I have 1917 and 1933 original German MvR autobiographies and have compared them to "The Red Air Fighter" and there are numerous errors, and at times even outright invention. Still, mostly a good and casual read.

Thanks JFM.
Guess I should have figured his May (pre-wounding) leave period.
