I managed to find a great deal on a used Intel i7 990X chip. I realize it's old tech now (2011), but I didn't have $1k+ to spend on a whole new motherboard, memory and CPU at the moment. I got the chip in last week, and after running tests to verify the integrity of the CPU, and benchmarks to see how well it performs, I can say this was a good purchase to hold me over until I can completely renew my system.

I was running an i7 920 OC'd to 3.5Ghz since 2010. I'm now running the 990X at it's Turbo speed of 3.73Ghz on all 12 cores (physical and logical).

My 3DMark results for Fire Strike are these:

Fire Strike: 16603

Fire Strike Extreme: 9099

Fire Strike Ultra: 5128

Argon then this https://nl.hardware.info/reviews/79...zen-a-intel-coffee-lake-de-upgrade-waard could be intresting to read, it is in Dutch but Google web translator is your best friend.

Think if your playing BoX/RoF&Clod this could be a good deal. Now if you are facing performance troubles you could play with affinity settings. Lets say core 1 until 4 exclusive for the game and 5 & 6 for the rest.

It is better to close the HT, because most flysim game can not cope to the 6 extra HT cores.

It is an X, so next upgrade an Noctua D15 or an big water cooler set.

Ah thanks very much!

Actually most sims and such are running great with my rig. For IL-2: 1946 I am indeed using the 'affinity' setting as it's a single threaded game I think? Other games and apps I use do take advantage of HT so I keep it on.

In similar news, I upped the OC speed to 4.0 Ghz and did lots of testing. So far she is running great!

Not combat but XPlane 10 was said (by the developer) to use up to 20 threads. One for each plane and in version 11 the cars on the streets use some..

More recently they pointed out:

Quote
Three Performance Optimizations for X-Plane 11.02

"we have been steadily adding more multi-core work for the last few years, and we’ll be adding more in future X-Plane 11 updates. For example, X-Plane 10.50 re-structured the renderer, separating the work of discovering what to draw (“culling”) from the work of actually drawing. In X-Plane 11, we can do that culling on multiple cores, improving total framerate."

The article does indicate its done for FPS and makes a difference. I haven't noticed how many total threads they are using now (was 20 in previous writing).

Cores and threads are the future of high reality simulations. Some are already there (e.g. XPlane).

FWIW.
